Skeeter blues

I feel so sorry for Skeeter.  She had a favorite place to lie, in the
geraniums by the sliding glass door.  She has spent a great deal of time
there the past couple of days.

I check up on her whereabouts often because of her CRF, and because it's
often time to giver her more medication, or try to get her to eat, or
give her an infusion.

I took some food out this morning, and saw her backing out of that spot.
Then she sadly walked away.  Apparently she had urinated where she was
lying, so now her "best place" is spoiled.  It is very hot here today,
so I'm sure the spot is dry now.  I sprinkled some litter box deodorizer
over the place where it was, in the hope that later she will feel able
to use the spot again.

In the meantime, she has gone into hiding.  I've looked every place I
can think of, and can't find her.  This is the fourth time that has
happened.  I no longer panic completely when it does, but I really need
to find her so I can giver her an infusion and try to get her to eat a
little.

I'd appreciate purrs that I find her soon.  I have to go out this
evening, and I really want to have taken care of this (besides knowing
where she is) before I leave.

Joy, it's awful for you.   But cats do go up and down with this
complaint.  They can be really sick for days then have a complete
revival, start eating again and being normal.  Let's hope this happens
with Skeeter.

Thank you, Bev.  Yes, I think I've just started this roller coaster
ride, and there's no telling how long it will last.  As I said in my
response to Catnipped, I found her.  This time.

Thank you.  I had myself a good (?) cry and did some heavy-duty praying.
Then I did another search and found her.  I managed to get about half
the infusion into her, and then she was so restless and miserable I was
afraid she'd hurt herself on the needle, so I took it out.  Next time I
hope I'll remember to shut off the flow before removing the needle.  ;-)

I'm thinking that since I've proved I can do it myself, and the length
of time seems to be an issue with her, maybe we'd both be better off if
I give her half the amount every day.

It's an emotional roller coaster, and I'm sure there will be more ups
and downs before the whole thing ends.  However, I went into this with
my eyes wide open.  I know that whenever you allow yourself to love, you
are setting yourself up to be hurt.  When you love an animal whose
probable life span is 1/4 of yours or less, you almost guarantee it.
It's the price you pay, and it's a heavy one, but I think it's worth it.

{{{{Joy}}}}  I'm so sorry for the rollercoaster you're on.  I've been
there twice with CRF, and here I am again with another CRF cat.  Not
the point of sub-q fluids yet, but I'm afraid the time is fast
approaching.

Had to laugh at you forgettig to shut off the flow before removing the
needle.  I gave fluids to a friend's cat while they were on vacation,
and I forgot to do that, too!  Got fluid all over my friend who has
holding the cat.  Luckily, she was a nurse, so she's used to getting
vairous fluids on her all the time!  lol!

And you are so right -- no matter what, the price is worth it.  When
all is said and done, and the deep grief dissipates in time, what you
will always remember most is the love and the laughter.

Blessings,

Poor Skeeter!  She must be so embarrassed that she 'wet the bed'.
Mega purrs are on the way that she comes out of hiding before you have
to leave this evening, and that she soon gets to feeling better.  Poor
baby.

Thank you, Nan.  I found her new hiding place.  I just hope I haven't
spoiled that for her too, by dragging her out of it.

Maybe you can put a little bed in her other spot. You can protect it with
plastic and then a soft cover that you can change out? Hugs to you and

Joy,
Hugs to you and gentle under the chin rubs to Skeeter.  It's so hard to
watch our special companions lose ground.  It makes those good moments all
the more precious.  I hope Skeeter finds her special place under the
geraniums to be suitable again.

Thank you, Annie.  I sprayed the spot with F.O.N. and then laid an old
terrycloth rag over it.  She hasn't been back yet, but she's found
another spot that seems to suit her.  Unfortunately, it's harder for me
to get at her when I need to medicate her, but at least she has a spot
where she can lie now.

(((Joy))) so sorry to hear about Skeeter's problems. From everything I
hear hydration really helps. Sending purrs that she'll get used to the
routine and will start eating and taking her meds.

Which reminds me of BlueBird and her cat. I remember it was about this
time last year that her Little Bit was given 4-5 days to live - I
think I even sent early RB purrs. (Course the fact that I have a
Little Bit of my own really made me feel for her Little Bit.) But her
LB fooled TED and I received an e-mail from towards the end of July
and she said her Little Bit was doing well, except for no appetite. I
guess I'm just saying that sometimes they confound the "experts" and
continue to do well after TED has pretty much given up - not that
Skeeter is to that point yet.

Message to self: I really need to send off a message and see how the
two of them are getting along.

Thanks, Steve.  I gave Skeeter an infusion today - my first one on my
own - and it went really well until about half the fluid was in.  Then
she started struggling, and I decided to let her go.  Next time I hope
I'll remember to stop the flow of fluid before I take the needle out.
<G>

I really think it will be easier on both of us if I give her half the
amount and infuse her every day.  Of course that does require being able
to find her.

Yes, both BlueBird and her LittleBit fooled the doctors, and they're
both still around long after BB was told they would be.  BB does seem to
be declining.  The last time I talked to her, she said she was having to
stay in bed most of the time.  At least she now has a friend who stays
with her part of the time and helps her.

I need to call her again.

It can be such a worry when you can't find a sick cat.  Instinct tells
them to find a spot where they aren't likely to be disturbed.  Of
course, hoomins call that hiding.  Purrs on the way.

Thanks, OJ.  I finally found her.  I felt bad about it, because I think
she needs a place where she feels safe, but I needed to give her that
infusion.

Dear Joy
Good thoughts on their way to you and Skeeter. I feel for you both. It
does take them some time to get used to the regular medications - I also
found it hard to medicate my Simon at first. It was bad enough to see
him feeling so sick, let alone seeing that reproachful look in his big
green eyes after I'd shoved yet another pill down his throat. We did get
used to it though. It was SO well worth persevering - the treatment not
only lengthened Simon's life, but it really improved his quality of
life. I wouldn't swap the extra time we had together for anything. I
hope things settle down soon and you get to enjoy the same.

Thank you, Helen.  I see the doctor tomorrow, and I'm going to ask her
about switching the liquid medications to pills I can use in a gelcap.
Giving her two gelcaps a day would be preferable to squirting
nasty-tasting stuff in her mouth five times a day - for both of us.  I
appreciate the encouragement, too.  That reproachful look, or her trying
to run away from me, is one of the worse parts of this whole thing.
