Went to see said film today, with Nathan. Total dross, but liked the way
Hellboy (6'5" of demon who is a goodie) had a softspot for cats - had loads of
them, and how he saved tiny kittens from the evil hounds of hell ;-)

Cheers, helen s

I watched that movie on an IdleAir connection at a truck stop a few
weeks ago. Not much in the way of a movie, but I enjoyed it a lot anyway
just because of the kitty moments.

Ha! That's the best recommendation I've heard for it so far. Well, I sat
through The Bourne Supremacy, and I Robot, this surely can't be any worse.

(Actually, I fell asleep during The Bourne Supremacy ....)

Haven't seen "Bourne Supremacy" yet, but I have watched "I, Robot", with Will
Smith acting in his role as...err... Will Smith ;-)

Hellboy is worse than "I, Will Smith", apart from the touches with the cats.
Basically it's Ron Perlman doing the same role as in Beauty and the Beast, but
instead of being half-man, half-lion, this time he's minus the mane and with
red skin!

LOL!!! :)

OK, could someone who's seen this movie tell me whether there are any
scenes of kitties getting hurt or killed? I can't see the movie unless
I know there are no kitty casualties.

No, there are NO kitty casualties! In one scene a box of kittens is
endangered by a huge monster, but Hellboy pauses in doing battle with
the beast to return the box full of kittens to their human caretaker.

Thank you! That's a relief...

None. Hellboy has loads of pet cats - he adores cats. Quite a few shots of him
making a fuss of the cats. There's a battle scene where a woman drops a box
containing a couple of kittens. Hellboy stops in mid battle to rescue the
kittens and wheile fighting is going on, he's keeping the kittens out of harm's
way. Very cute ;-)

Hopefully I've put your mind at rest on that score. Mind you aren't missing any
Oscar-winning performances if you don't see it ;-)

So I hear. But for some reason, I'm curious about it. And this way, if
the mood ever strikes me to see it, I won't have to cringe every time
there's a monster or something else evil coming near sweet little kittens.

I know, it's weird - I can watch all sorts of things happening to people
in movies, but let someone touch a hair on a cat's head and I can't watch
the rest of it. I think you guys can understand that...

ABsolutely! My whole family is that way. When someone is telling me or
Nancy or my mom or my brother about a movies, one of the questions that
ALWAYS gets asked is "do any dogs or cats get hurt in any way?". If the
answer is yes, we don't see the movie.

A few years ago, someone on this list started a web page that rated
various movies in terms of how much animal suffering occurs in the film.
I don't think the project got very far, though - there were about 2 movies
listed on it, and then I never heard about it again. I would love to start
another site like that, and I have web hosting space available for it.

Would anyone here be interested in there being such a site? If so, would
you be willing to help out with it? I can create the site and do the
HTML coding, etc, but I need DATA! I don't know which films have animal
suffering in them and which don't, except for the few I've seen and heard
about (that's why I want the site!).

If you want, you could post here with your list of films to avoid, or,
if certain movies are known to have animals, to reassure the rest of
us that there is no suffering. Please describe the general type of thing
that happens (don't need or want details, but something like "horse gets
injured but survives" would suffice).

I would also like to distinguish between an animal getting sick or hurt
in the course of nature, and suffering caused by cruelty or neglect (I
find the latter far more upsetting).

Mildly upsetting scenes are also welcome - I would simply rate those as
mild.

Open to suggestions!

Joyce, I'm pretty sure that PETA or the Humane Society already have
such sites.

I wouldn't think so, actually. Those organizations exist to help
animals, not to protect humans from feeling the pain of seeing an
animal suffer - in fiction, no less. They're probably pretty judicious
about how they spend their money, since they're so dependent on
contributions, and I don't think a site like that would advance the
cause of animal welfare or animal rights. I'm sure these organizations
would care much more about how the animals are treated on the set of
a film than on how people feel when watching the movie.

But, I'll check it out, in case you're right and I'm full of it. :)

Protecting animals also means protecting them from being mistreated to
make films, AND from the depiction and possible promotion and
proliferation of depicting their suffering in the mass media.  It is
to alert people who care about animals that this is something to
avoid, not only to protect their sensibilities-- but to prevent them,
if they desire, from patronizing such films, and to send the
filmmakers a message that such films are offensive and not desired by
the public.

It sounds like something PETA would do. They have a list of manufacturers to
boycott because of animal testing/poor treatment of animals.
Personally, I think there should be a new rating for movies for the "violence
to animals" content! I can watch Freddy Kruger slash cheerleaders all day long,
but I cannot bear to see a dog run over.

IIRC, it was Ginger-Lyn who set up a web page like this.

"The Ladykillers" ia another recent offering with a rather sweet cat in.
The movie isn't one of the Coen brothers' better efforts and isn't a
patch on the original, but I still quite enjoyed it anyway.

I just watched the original recently, and you're right.  What a hoot.
Alec Guinness's *teeth* are funny!  "Nobody touches Mrs. Lopsided!"
