Happy ending

dirtylitterboxofferingstospammers - 03 Sep 2004 09:03 GMT After phoning the local vets & police to report a "found" siamese in my garden, there is a happy ending. Chairman Maow, as I called him, is actually called Chan, or "Charlie" as a pet name. He bleongs to someone from the far side of the village and to get to my place, Chairman Maow had to negotiate a *busy* dual carriageway with cars & trucks doing 70mph and over... I hope Chairman Maow had the sense to use the bridge ;-)
Seems CM was booked into the vet to have the family jewels removed, but managed to escape the day before the event. Sounds like a b*st*rd cat trick :-)

Oh. I was WONDERING how a cat could escape from a vet's establishment! I think they usually walk the dogs, but SFAIK, cats are generally caged (other than "resident" felines, who have the run of the office - at least at my vet's).

Cats can escape from anywhere. About 20 years ago my great aunt had a cat called Sammy, who escaped from the vets and ran into the woods accross the road. My great aunt spent hours looking for her but couldn't fine her. The next day I went with her and after about 2 hours fond Sammy hiding under a bush. I picked her up and put her in my coat, I think you could have heard the purrs a mile away.

Ah ha, sounds like he picked up on the signs that a trip to TED was in the offing and made good his escape.
Rocky is also one of those who has been known to vanish for a few days when I mention a trip to TED. In fact, after I told him the other day that we might move he has taken to sleeping outside at night instead of coming in.
For any who might be wondering, this is the first time I've mentioned the possibility of this move. A nieghbor who has, in the past, steered business my way, mentioned that he knew someone who lives on five acres who is looking for someone. She wants someone to live in a large one bedroom apartment above the garage to do the groundskeeping and act as security, since she travels quite a bit.
Course my first concern was whether there'd be a problem with my furry ones. But, the potential new landlord is fairly famous in this area for caring for animals, and one of my duties would be looking after her pets while she travels.
From what the neighbor told me, it sounds ideal for me and the cats. Heck, if what the neighbor told me is true I could stop storing my trailer and equipment at a friend's shop, since there'd be plenty of room in one of the out building on the property where I'd be able to park the trailer inside, which would save me about an hour and a half each day going to the shop and loading/unloading the trailer everyday.
I told him I'd be interested in at least talking to the lady and gave him one of my cards to give her. That as a couple weeks ago, and so far I haven't heard anything. I guess I need to catch up with the neighbor to see he passed along the card, and at least find out if the lady is still looking for someone.

Wow, don't let that one get away. It sounds like a perfect match. Talk about happy outcomes! Annie, directing purrs your way
Steve Touchstone - 06 Sep 2004 02:02 GMT >.... It sounds like a perfect match. >Talk about happy outcomes! Yeah, the more I think about it the better it sounds. I just came in from taking out some trash, and happened to see the neighbor. I went over and talked to him, and he said that she is definitely looking for someone and had asked him about me again this past week. Guess the guy who is there now is a friend of her son, and is basically just living rent free while doing as little as humanly possible. Ross, the neighbor, said he'd see her this week and tell her I'm definitely interested and see about setting up a meeting.
Also learned a little more about the apartment - all tile so Sammy would have lots more room for bottle cap hockey ;-) He thinks there's definitely space for me to park truck and trailer inside each night. The apartment in over the garage where they used to park a bus-sized RV, and basically the garage is unused now as far as he knows. Again according to Ross, she has LOTS of cats. Since Ross has quite a menagerie, I wonder how many she has for him to say that ;-)
So guess my next worry would be intregrating my crew - especially Rocky who has been top cat as long as I've known him. I don't imagine the girls would have any problems since they only go for supervised visits outside, but Rocky is still outside pretty much everyday. I'm hoping he wouldn't have too much trouble adapting.

I know you'd said that Rocky gets along fine with all the neighborhood kitties - do you think that this could extend to a new set? Also, do you suppose that the moving to a new territory might make him accept being an inside kitty, at least to a much greater extent than he is now? He seems to be quite adaptable, considering that he went from untouchable to scritchmonger, even though it took a long time. I do hope your big guy has an easy time adjusting, if you do decide to move.

Well, that's certainly what I'm hoping for. It'd be great if I could convince him to stay inside, but like Tweed's Kitty FC, he spent so much of his early life out on his own it may be next to impossible for him to reconcile himself to being inside full time. Course the whole move thing is still very much in the preliminary stage as I haven't even met the potential new landlord. So far all my talk has been with my neighbor, and even with the best of intentions he may not know what the lady wants, or what I'd be willing to do.

Is it way out in the country or pretty close in? I'm sure after the furkids have had time to develop new "homing" instincts they'd be fine. And cats integrating outdoors is lots easier than trying to integrate indoors...at worst you'd probably have a few scraps, then a stand-off after they establish territory sharing. Rocky can handle that.

Rocky can handle that. Ross, my neighbor who has been acting as a sort of intermediator, has just given me a general picture as to location. From what I've been told it's on the outskirts of the east side of town.
I agree that, from what he's told me that it sounds great, but as I keep reminding myself it's still very preliminary and several things stop any move. The most likely roadblock, at least in my mind, is that since the guy who is supposed to be doing it now is a friend of the son, he could just be told to get off his butt or lose his spot. I should find out more tomorrow, since Ross has been renovating a house for the daughter, who live in Norman, and she'll be in town. The daughter is the only one I've actually met, since I did some yard clean up for her a couple times on houses she owns here in Lawton.
Again, from what I've been told, since I haven't actually seen the place, the apartment is over a garage, and there's access to the garage from the apartment. I figure I could let Rocky have access to the closed up garage so that he would have plenty hiding places until he learns where home is, and hopefully not feel to confined like he would just shut in the apartment. It's been a couple years since Rocky has had a fight that I know about, but from his scars I know that there were fights in his younger days. I hope that with his age, neutering, and being in a new place he will go easy on asserting himself into the established hierarchy. Although young for a house cat, from what I gather he's old for his former feral life. He's 10 years old, and I've heard or read somewhere that most street cats are lucky if they live much past 6, what with poor diet, lack of medical care, and the ever present traffic hazards. I sometimes make fun of Rocky's intellegience, but he has some smarts to survive like he did. I think he'd adapt to the new conditions.

You're right, he *has* to have some street >smarts to have survived that long. Well, course it's just a guess. The first time I captured him and took him to TED for an abcessed fight wound was about 4 years ago. TED wrote on his chart that he was 6-8 years old. Last year, when he went for his neutering, the guessimate was 8 or 9. Which goes to show how much better he looks after a couple years of regular meals. I know he's gained quite a bit of weightt, muscle not fat, since I started feeding him years ago, but don't know how much because they were afraid to take him out of the carrier to be weighed at his first TED appointment - he was MEAN back then, one of Kristi's red box kitties, maybe even a double lined red box ;-) TED's assisant at the time didn't want anything to do with him, so I helped Dr Haney hold him while he examined him from a distance and gave him a long acting antibiotic shot to clear up the abcess.

dirtylitterboxofferingstospammers - 03 Sep 2004 09:39 GMT >Let's hope he doesn't try to get back to your place! Hopefully. He was a lovely cat though. When checking up with neighbours yesterday to see if anyone knew whose cat it was, the concensus was a mixture of "I haven't seen any siamese wandering" and ""Yes, I've seen it, but it's a very frightened/nervous cat and it runs away." This is the cat that yowled at me to announce its arrival, twined itself around my legs, would allow me to pick it up, cuddle it and give it a good ear and chin scritch, talked to me non-stop in the way siamese do and repeatedly tried to find ways to get into my house...
Last night I left a cat bed out on the small porch along with a big bowl of food - no wonder it likes me, I have "Sucker for cats" written in large letters on my forehead. At least it meant I let it know it had a safe refuge until I found its owner.
