One of Nikki's favourite places to go for walkies used to be a little copse
beside our block of flats. Used to be.
I've been too tired to go out with Nikki in the evenings after work now that
I'm back at work, but yesterday I had a burst of energy, and asked Nikki if
she wanted to go out. She looked unbelieving at me, but when I jangled her
harness at her, she jumped off the bed and ran to the door. Out we went, and
Nikki headed straight for her copse. But it wasn't where it used to be!
All the lovely trees had been felled, and I suspect the underbrush will be
next to go. There was a sign up saying they will build a parking lot here. A
parking lot! As if I didn't hate cars enough already.
Poor Nikki dashed this way and that, looking for her wonderful copse. There
was no birdsong any more. No rustling among the leaves any more. I can only
hope that all the birds had left their nests (that's likely, since some are
flying south already).
Our lovely copse is gone.

Aww. That *is* sad. It takes so many years to get a tree full grown. All for a
stupid parking lot.

My condolences on your and Nikki's loss. It reminded me instantly of
the following song.
Regards and Purrs of consolation,

"Big Yellow Taxi "
Words and music by Joni Mitchell
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They took all the trees
Put 'em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

I'm sorry for Nikki's loss of her copse of trees, and I agree with OJ
that the song is very appropriate, but it's been playing in my head
since I saw the post yesterday. Pleeeease, make it stop!! :/

I'm sorry too, because it's important for wildlife and birds, as well as
Nikki enjoying it ;-)
There is no phrase in English for a tune continually playing in your head,
but my German friend calls it an "ear worm" Pretty appropriate, eh? I've
adopted the phrase myself.
I have two ear worms, Yellow Taxi, and another, Upside downy head to the
tune of the Sugar Plum fairy. I won't remind you how it goes in case you
get it yourself.

That's a good one. And just like a computer worm, they travel easily from
person to person. Just mention the name of a horrible song to someone, one
that's been torturing your for a while, perhaps, and bingo, that person's
got it now, too.
Though I might call it more of a "brain worm". The ear really isn't
involved, as it's all in one's head. :) (Yes, I'm being nerdy about it! :))

I first encountered the ear worm, or earworm, term in an
English-language newsgroup about four years ago, and now have a
number of my non-USENET-reading friends using the term as well. I
have no idea where it originated, or in what language, but it is a
very apt term.

LOL. I've never heard of ear worms in German, maybe it's a regional
thing. (I do speak German fairly fluently)
I tend to get all kinds of songs playing in my head, either from the
background music in shops, or like this from just seeing the lyrics or
hearing it on the radio or... Just call me "jukebox head"... :D

Maybe you can get some big bushy plants for your patio. Hmmm. I suppose as
cold as it gets that won't work. How about fake plants?

I do have some plants out there during the summer, but it's just not the
same without the birdies. ;o) Ah well, at least we still have the island.

One of the best things about living in the older part of town where I
live is the well established - and BIG - trees. I live in a two story
building, and we have a gigantic pecan tree which towers over us. None
of my crew have every expressed much interest in climbing, but the
birds and squirrels which frequent the tree provide endless
entertainment for the cats.

How terribly sad :-( The only reason to cut down a tree should be
because it's dead. Purrs for all the wildlife that has been made
homeless.

Sad. Always sad when trees are felled. Trees are the lungs of an urban area.
People (and cats) need trees.
Give Nikki a consoling earscritch from me.

Sometimes, progress is a good thing - other times it's just a dirty
word.
Here in Lawton, Oklahoma, we have a couple creeks which go through
town with lots of trees and underbrush. One stretch in particular used
to be lined with big pecan trees, and I used to mow along there back
when I was doing mowing with a tractor and 6 foot mower. When Home
Depot came to town they cut them down so that there would be more room
behind the store for deliveries.
