Today was such a nice day I let the cats out to play. They know what
the word "outside" means. It was a stampede! They all ran out the door
and disappeared for a few hours.

Finally Sheba came back in and promptly went to bed and rolled up into
a ball and slept. What had she been doing to get so tired? Whatever it
was she didn't want much supper. I suspect the rodent population had a
casualty.

Djoser came streaking in with belly close to the ground. I looked out
to see what might have spooked him. All I could see was Robin lying
stretched out on the sidewalk. Perhaps easy-going Robin becomes
aggressive outside?? Djoser joined Sheba on the bed and made a nest
out of the covers and snoozed.

Finally, I thought I had better get Robin in before starting supper. I
called a few times. then I went out among the mosquitos to call again
and again. When he watches a rodent hole, there is no getting him away
from it. Also, when he sleeps, he is dead to the world; which is
dangerous outside.

Finally, I saw him coming to the door. I opened it for him; but he
turned and went back. so I went out after him. He went to the gate and
flopped like he was exhausted. I went to pick him up when I spotted a
small yellow goldfinch lying near him. I picked it up and straightened
and held it at eye-level to identify the species.

Weary Robin came to life; he must have thought I was stealing his
prey. He leaped into the air and I swung the bird in startlement and
he did a contortion leap in mid-air and slapped it from my hand!! That
maneuver should have won a Gold Medal! Well, it did win him a Lesser
Goldfinch! LOL!

He played with it for awhile before he ate it. He earned it. Although
I wish it had been a sparrow or starling instead.

Sheba is very good at whatever she does. And she doesn't play with her
food.

Sounds like the cats had a wonderful day. Did you find out what spooked
Djoser?

They do enjoy themselves outdoors, since they don't get to go out very
often. As for Djoser, he has been acting like that for a couple
months. he used to be so hard to get in. But now he only stays out for
a couple hours and then comes in slinking. the only thing I cna think
of is that Robin has gained the ascendancy when they are outside. As
big as Djoser is, Robin is now bigger and still not two years old!
Inside, they often play together and even sleep together. One day we
cought Djoser washing Robin's head! They have come a long way since
thier war-time in the spring.

Aww, that's nice. But it's true that cats' behaviour can change a lot when
they are outside. I see it every summer on the island, when Nikki turns into
a little wildcat (Frank remains his own lovable, tame self).

Puss Puss, the oft-mentioned little huntress  that was my DH's kitty,
went with Lynda and her grandparents to a cabin in upstate New York
for a month every summer.  It was a cat's paradise, with a whole
forest to roam in, a stream feeding a lake that were both within a
cat's range, and all the comforts of home when she wanted them.

When they were getting ready to leave though, they had a terrible time
rounding up the cat and were forced to keep her in the cabin for a few
days prior to departure, unless they wanted to wait around with
everything packed, hoping the cat would show up to accompany them.

Reading about the island has always made me wonder if you had the same
problems with Nikki and Frank.  Are they prone to get "lost" when
you're trying to leave?

Do they ever. ;o)

When they were younger, they would go off for several days at a time,
especially Nikki. When we got out to the island and I let Nikki outside, I
always knew I wouldn't see her quite a while. Frank would mostly stay closer
to home, and especially in the beginning he would come and call for me if I
was inside, and then I had to go out and watch him play. But by and by he
would start making longer trips too. Lately, they have stayed pretty close
to home, even Nikki doesn't disappear for more than a few hours at a time.

But when we are going home, I have to shut them inside a couple of hours
before we have to leave. Somehow, they know when we are going to leave. One
time, I was supposed to come to town with my brother's family. Everyone was
ready and packed into the boat, but Frank and Nikki where nowhere to be
seen. My brother waited half an hour, but then I told him to just go on, I
would have to make my own way another time, when the cats where there. The
minute the sound of the boat had vanished behind the headland, both cats
came strolling home casually. I swear they had been hiding until the boat
had gone. But I got them! I shut the door on them and called my brother's
mobile, and nice guy that he is, he turned back (well, he hadn't gone that
far) and came and fetched us.
