Louie's getting disgruntled and is looking for new work. He's at a
nonprofit outfit now and learned he is grossly underpaid for a
programmer. I told him that if he doesn't get up off his keister and hit
the job sites, I'd tell everyone about the time he belched in my mouth
the first time he kissed me. (oops!!!)

My hubby needs some purrs of encouragement to get moving and find the
dream job he needs. he's a brilliant mathematician and statistician, and
a better programmer than he gives himself credit for. Please pet the
Emanations of the One Great Cat who share your homes, that some good
karma may shift his way!

Many thanks and blessings threefold!

Same from me.  I once worked for an environmental charity for a while, and
what they paid wasn't enough to live on.  I understand completely why they
cannot pay a realistic wage, but I needed to eat and pay my utility bills.
Unfortunately that's why I left them.
They taught me a lot though.  Turn off your electric lights as much as you
can.  Compost everything possible.   You can get great compost from tea
bags, eggshells, vegetable waste and the like to put on your garden (and
window box even) to grow yourself a few vegetables.  Just put it in
something like a dustbin (sorry, don't know what it's called in USA)
Garbage can perhaps?
Then wait.  Beautiful compost for your plants in the end.

Compost is expensive to buy here.  It's a shame, because recently
houses/gardens are so small  and close to each other that there is no chance
to have a compost heap.

I have loads of compost, I almost cannot keep up with how it develops from
chicken poo, veg waste, etc.
I'm giving it to my family for their gardens, but soon their gardens will be
bursting with it.
It works very well.  Everything growing explodes.

Anyone want any?  <g>

We have a municipal compost here in Helsinki (and other Finnish cities). You
take your organic waste to a compost bin, the city workers pick it up and
transport it to the municipal compost, and the city gets the benefit of the
compost. What's best, I can put the cats' used litter in, which I couldn't
do if I had my own compost, because it would be too strong stuff to put in a
little compost, but the huge municipal compost can handle it.

Job purrs right back atcha! :)

Nonprofits can't pay what tech companies can pay, but as others have
mentioned here, the tech industry is suffering right now and it's harder
to find jobs than it used to be. But not impossible. Certainly there are
more programming jobs than tech writing jobs (my profession)!

And you fell in love with him right then and there... :)

Actually, I fell over laughing when it happened, and this was at a Buffalo
Philharmonic concert. I am a very prodigious belcher and was recently asked
to go on a local radio program to demonstate that even grown-ups (?) like to
let them loose. (I declined for Louie's sake, as he believes that
roof-blasting burps are best kept under one's own roof.) My ex Jeff and I
used to do "drive-bys," where we scored points based on who got belched at
from a moving vehicle, and how severe the reaction. Please let me mention
that we hooked up in high school so this explains much.

So when Louie did the deed on our first date, what was I going to do, smack
him? I thought I had it coming to me. Only I would have a man kiss and burp
at the same time. The poor fellow was horrified at himself and didn't
understand what I thought funny. I made up for it two years later, when I
tripped during the wedding procession.

Blessed be,

Baha

I'm retired now and am doing all right.  Lately though I've become
very reflective about the choices I've made in my life. I regret that
I never really reached for the brass ring.  Take it from me, Louie
doesn't want to end up regretting that he never lived up to his full
potential.  That's the same advice I'm currently giving to my nephew,
who needs it, probably more than Louie does.

I will be sending my best purrs your way. I will definitely be sending
purrs that he does better in that regard than I have been doing (B. Sc.
degree in electrical engineering, 25 years experience as a programmer
and system administrator, currently driving a semi-truck due to the
complete absence of programming jobs in the southern California).

Extra purrs and a candle lit for encouragement.  It sounds like he isn't the
sort to put himself forward so his abilities may get overlooked.  But if he
were working in a place where there was room to advance and use his skills
he would be great.  Doesn't sound like that is the case where he is now.

Best wishes from one math/stat programmer to another then!

and as an aside:
<rant mode on> There seems to be an awful lot of this underuse of skills
and talents by employers around at the moment. We are not only wasting
the world's physical resources but doing the same with our people, and
that seems almost more offensive to me. I wish I knew what the answer
was though. Any managers out there please take note! <rant mode off>
Sorry folks, this just bothers me.
