What the Bleep & Job purrs

This post is actually about two things. First, has anyone seen the
movie "What the (Bleep) Do We Know"? (Sometimes written as "What the
#@$*! Do We Know".)

It's a documentary about the total weirdness of quantum physics and
how all matter in the universe is mostly emptiness, with a few bits of
little particles that wink in and out of existence, and that exist only
in probability rather then in certainty. So basically, although we and
our surroundings feel real and feel solid, we're actually made up of
*potential*.

It then talks about the connection between our strange constituent
parts and the existence of other worlds, other dimensions, and intelligent
conciousness in the universe. Yes, it sounds a tad woo-woo New Age, but
in between the various talking heads (physicists, biologists, theologians,
doctors, and many others) there were some really illuminating graphics
that helped explain what sub-atomic particles are, and what happens in
the brain when we have thoughts and feel emotions. It uses a lot of fun
and humor to get its points across, so it's not going to put you to sleep.

Anyway, they were talking about "intention" as a force that can influence
events. By intention, they're talking about people's intentions as to
how they want to shape their lives, by being concious and present, and
deliberately choosing to follow certain paths. As an example, they talked
about the combined energy of collective intention: about 4000 people
went to Washington DC to focus on lessening the violence in that city,
known in the USA as the crime capital of the country. (LOL, in more ways
than one... sorry... couldn't resist.) With the combined efforts of the
4000 people meditating on lessening hostility and violence, the crime
rate in the city *did* come down, by about 25% that year. Amazing!

And I know that folks here will read that and say, "But of course! We
knew that all along! It's nothing more than THE POWER OF PURR!!" :)

So if the film comes to your area, I recommend it to you. Don't know if
it's currently showing outside the US, but I hope so - it's a "universal"
theme, after all. (Sorry, bad pun.) See it! Even if you don't like it
that much, it will make you think.

Anyway, getting to the second part of this message - relating to the
Power of Purr - I'm wondering if I might have a few purrs for a job that
I applied for a couple of weeks ago. I've had two interviews, they seemed
to like me a lot, and as of this past Wednesday, they were checking my
references. But I haven't heard from them since, and I'm wondering what's
going on. It occurred to me that maybe it needs a little push from the
RPCA community to get that offer into my unemployed, broke little hands!!

So, talk amongst yourselves, pipe up if you've seen "What the Bleep..."
and if you can, please ask for a few purrs that I get this job and end
almost 2 years of enforced leisure.

Thank you!!

Huge purrs.  Massive purrs.  Purrs the loudest you ever heard for you to get
this job.
Is the situation really bad job-wise in USA?  I've heard so many people on
the group want jobs.

Jobs in the US, especially technical jobs, are extremely scarce. As an
example, the Sunday LA Times used to carry 5 or 6 pages of classified
ads looking for programmers. The LA Times last Sunday carried 5. 5 ads,
not 5 pages.

When the White House makes pronoucements about the US economy being
healthy and robust, and the US employment situation being the best it's
been in X years, they're fibbing.  Either that or their blind or
ignorant. I'll believe the US economy is doing well and the employment
situation is sound when the people on this newsgroup looking for work
all have jobs in the fields of their choice.

The Washington Post does have more ads, but they almost exclusively
require currently active high-level security clearances.

Isn't that the truth. Even when you've been employed for a while,
they all of a sudden start requiring clearance to do certain tasks. I
had to get cleared this year, but it was a low clearance. I can see
that having to be upgraded at some point.

Yup. When we were interviewing for a position in our group, I went
through over 80 resumes! We were supposed to hire 5 folks to replace 5
colleagues who left the company, but we only got 1 new hire and 1
transfer from another group. We're on a hiring freeze now and the few of
us left are having to do the job of everybody who left. :(

That is about right.
I applied for a job the first day it came out on Monster.com.
Last I looked there were over 100 applicants for the position.
It is getting real grim.
I do have an interview Monday for a position that I applied for over 2
months ago.
The first interview in three months.

Congrats on getting the interview! Yeah, 3 months sounds about right.
That's been about the speed of my interview-getting, too.

Good luck & purrs for a good interview tomorrow!

Not speaking too scientifically, but it certainly seems very bad in the
high-tech sector. In many industries, the stock price often seems tied
to how deeply the staff can be cut. Of course, this is often only a
short-term saving, but the market seems overly oriented to quarterly
profits.  I've never seen it so bad since I went to work in the late
sixties.

This group isn't a realistic cross section of the labor force in the USA.
For starters it is an international group.  It tends toward the at least
reasonably computer savvy.  And anyone who already has a full time job,
spends time commuting, has a family to deal with and also loves cats and
their antics is going to have a limited amount of time left to participate.

Still, we gotta keep the cats in tuna so always purr for each individual who
is looking for a job, or a better job.

Maybe I should go back to the older, not always correct terminology in
my medical computing, and refer to CAT rather than CT scanning. Of
course, we still may have the classic alternative medicine approach of
having patients sniffed thoroughly by a Siamese and a Labrador
Retriever, bringing back CAT scans and LAB tests.

Thinking about it, a MRI scanner does sound like an extremely flatulent
d-o-g.

VERY bad.  I USED to be a web architect making a six figure salary.  Now it
seems every technical job is going to India or China to people who will do
the work for 3 or 4 dollars an hour.  I lost my job last November (one week
after we purchased our house) and I looked for a job for 6 months before I
took work as an administrative assistant making half what I used to make.
Our life savings was wiped out by that (I was the sole breadwinner in my
house) and a string of misfortune after that.  I don't see it getting better
any time soon, jobs just keep bleeding away overseas.

Hugs,

you.)

Lots of purrs coming over for the job. I haven't seen that film advertised
here, but if it ever comes to Helsinki, I will go see it. Sounds really
interesting.

I haven't seen the movie, and I can say with assurance that it won't
be coming to my town, because we haven't got a theater here.  ;-)

On the other hand, we do have purrs in abundance, and we are sending a
big batch your way that you'll get the job you want.
