Abelard To Be Grounded

Pat - 28 Aug 2004 06:17 GMT If he shows up, that's it!!!
I can't take his disappearing acts anymore. He left in the middle of the night last night and I spent about 3 hours searching for him this evening, worrying half to death.
He ordinarily returns by no later than midnight. Not tonight.
And meowmie cannot sleep.
It's just been too damned hot at night to keep the door shut. Well, at least tonight if he shows up during the night he'll be able to get in.
I love that cat too much :(

I really get jittery when the moon is full and the sky is clear. They are too visible out there to the owls, coyotes, cougars and whatnot.
He isn't here yet. It's still too hot to sleep, anyway.
He picks the night when I have some shrimpies for him?!?!?

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > He picks the night when I have some shrimpies for him?!?!? Hope Abelard comes home safe and soon, Pat. They sure love to worry us, don't they? I still haven't forgotten the time Pan disappeared and spent the whole day between breakfast and midnight away from home. I was so happy by the time he came back, that I forgot my anger and anxiety.
Zinnia, a friend's cat, disappeared on me once when I was cat sitting. She was still a fairly new cat to my friend, and as far as I knew, she could have run almost anywhere. It turned out that that evil cat was in the backyard the whole time, watching and listening as I circled and circled, calling her at intervals for two days. She was one evil pussycat.
Melissa
Pat - 28 Aug 2004 12:38 GMT > that evil cat was in the backyard the whole time, > watching and listening as I circled and circled, > calling her at intervals for two days. I can see that happening with one that doesn't know you.
Abelard is still not here. All night I heard owls right near the house.
Pat - 28 Aug 2004 07:58 GMT Just finished third circumambulation of the farm searching for Abelard. Not a trace.... But I did encounter one of Gloria's dogs, Bandit (3/4 Great Pyrenees, 1/4 English Setter - the only one of her dogs that isn't neutered), near the pond where I usually find Abelard.
Bandit was acting strange. He would not approach me. When I spoke to him, he kept trying to slink away, but he's too obedient to leave when you're talking to him, so he laid down but would not let me approach him, he would get up and move farther from me when I tried.
I am suspicious of this dog. When people + cats are around him, he's gentle enough, but who knows what they do when you aren't looking and they find a cat. He was in the yard this morning, too, and when he saw me he went slinking away down the driveway.
Tonight I told Bandit to go home, and he went, but I have a feeling he'll be back later, maybe hunting for more cats.

I wonder if it's because the weather has been nice (we're in SW Oklahoma). He was being about coming in and not being interested in going back out. Now he shows up here about 9PM, comes in for some petting, eat a bite, and wants to go back outside. but once he's inside I keep him in until the next morning. Last night he didn't want back out, and sure enough a storm came through and we received over an inch of rain.

I have screens, including (as of a few days ago) a screen door with a cat hole in it. But if I close the main door and do not tape down the latch on the electronic pet door, nobody can come in without a collar magnet, and nobody is wearing a magnet now. And if I tape down the pet door latch, everyone can come and go as they please, which is not good.
He's still not here. A while ago I looked out the window into the back pasture and thought I saw him, but it turned out to be a clump dry of grass.
It's possible he stopped in while I was in town yesterday, I was gone from 3:30 until 7:30 p.m. and the door was open, but there's no way to know that. It's now about 36 hours since I last saw him - his longest ever absence. I'm at the stage of near-constant hunting for him.

But, I *did* find her eventually, even though she was injured and couldn't come home and now she's fine. Don't give up hope. Also, I probably wouldn't read too much into the dog's behaviour. They are very good at reading your body language and if he thought you looked cross/upset/worried, that might be enough to make him think it was "him" that had caused it and made him slink away in case he got into trouble.
Even though I don't know either you or Abelard, I feel like I do somehow and I'm worried too. Please let us know what's happening. You say he's gone missing before. He couldn't be one of those cats that have two homes could he? Neither one knowing about the other? Just a thought.

I'm not giving up hope, but the chances of finding him if he's hurt are slim around here. Too much wild territory to be covered.

I nearly went mad when Kitty was missing and got absolutely soaked to the skin while I was searching for her. I cannot say that what you tell me doesn't worry me. But let's think positive. When he comes home, box his ears for worrying you so much. I wish you didn't have so much land to search, I had only a couple of acres to look for Kitty in. I have an idea. When he comes back, fit him with one of those collars like the wildlife people do, so you can track him. Not sure where you get them from, but you obviously can or they wouldn't have them.
There is hardly anything in the world worse than having one of your family missing.

And please don't forget to check out the web sites that address the behavior of inside cats when they get outside. Their behaviors change so radically that it can become much harder to find them if you aren't aware of what behaviors to look for.

Still don't give up hope yet and keep searching. You may find him, but there again the little ?"%&(* might come home on his own. Don't box his ears too much. When I was about 9, someone in my class said they had a new baby sister, and invited me to come and look. I did, and I think I spent around an hour there after school. Then I walked home. You'd never let a child do it now, through fields and streams and a lonely place. I decided I'd fish the stream for little fish on my way back. There I was in the stream, hours after I should have come home from school. Suddenly. Whack around the head. My grandmother had found me. I cried and she cried too because she was so relieved. When you get your little lad back, try not to do this ;-) So easy to do, isn't it. "You absolute +****, I thought you were dead and now you are not I want to kill you for worrying me out of my mind"
Hope he comes home soon. I feel for you.

Wish there was something I could do. Don't give up on Abelard. I had a cat once who *never* left the yard disappear for 48 hours and came back. Just becuase he's not in the habit of wandering away doesn't mean he won't turn up any minute. Keep calling him. Have you had company lately that maybe he could have jumped in/or under their vehicle and got taken away? Or is there someplace he could have accidentally gotten shut up, or fallen somewhere that he can't climb out? Grain bins or such? We'll keep purring for him, and for Billy too. Please, please keep us posted.

I couldn't take worrying about my cat. When my cat could get outside I always had nightmares of him dying or getting lost. I also used to hesitate driving down my street worrying that I might see him dead in the street. I do realize that it's safer for kitties to be indoors, they'll live longer, have fewer expensive vet visits...and I would have kept him inside for those reasons alone. But, the main reason was my peace of mind. If he didn't come to bed by midnight, I couldn't sleep, would have nightmares, would walk outside calling for him like a lunatic.
Pat - 29 Aug 2004 05:21 GMT Miracle purr power made this happen!
I had closed up the house, and he woke me up scratching at the cat door. He is fine, chowing down on Fancy Feast (since he missed his shrimpies) as I type this.
He will NOT be out at night again for a good long time - probably the rest of his life!
It could be that he stayed away to avoid Eli, who's been picking on him lately (no idea why) and is triple his weight and size.
Billy felt hot earlier when we were out walking. I had to carry him for a while and his little body seemed feverish, but now he seems normal.
Purr power again!
The one that worries me now is Baby Eyes. She's losing so much weight and fur that she's even more sensitive to cool weather than Abelard, and her skin is an absolute mess it seems the more I try to help her, the worse it gets. What's the best cat vitamin on the market?

It's a > prescription med. I've been reading some articles online about flea allergy dermatitis. This really sounds like her problem. There don't have to be a lot of fleas for them to suffer with this. I saw a few fleas on her today. Previously I didn't think this was it, but I've changed my mind now!
One of the articles is at http://tinyurl.com/3tjuj
The focus is on dogs but cats are also mentioned as being susceptible.

If Silvadene is effective to stop the itching from this condition, then I accept your offer.

Pat, if you really think it is fleas, I would get some Advantage for her. Do you use any flea stuff?

If you use the Silvadene, watch the cat carefully. It can cause allergic reaction. I had a terrible time when I used it on my hard-to-heal cat scratches. MLB

I had a terrible time when I used it on my hard-to-heal cat > scratches. MLB Silvadene is silver sulfadiazine. Its major use is as a treatment for moderate to major burns, although it can help for skin infections. As suggested, sulfa drugs do have a significant risk of infection.
Unfortunately, some of the better human drugs for itching are prescription oral medications. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream would be a reasonable choice. Incidentally, the terms "cream" and "ointment" are not interchangeable -- a cream is in a water base and an ointment is in an oil base. My thinking is that an ointment is less likely to soak into fur, and then get licked off.
The problems with corticosteroids is that you are limited by surface area how much you can apply on skin, so dermatologists tend to use much more potent prescription ones.
Will he tolerate being wet? Some wet compreses might help a lot if he will tolerate it. One method is to put some oatmeal into cheesecloth or some light cloth, soak it, and squeeze the liquid onto the itchy areas. Another over the counter liquid is Burrow's Solution (aluminum acetate).
I have a suspicion this is going to need prescription drugs.
