There's good news, and there's not so good news.

The good is that the leg appears to be healing nicely, and he's no
longer in the e-collar.  Compared to the two months plus of bandages,
hospitalisation and e-collar that we had last time, I think we've got
off lightly.

However, the vet took another blood test and it appears that Jasper is
diabetic.  Late onset - he's not overweight and, judging by outward
appearances, is perfectly healthy.  It was only through the vet testing
his blood prior to putting him under to clean up the leg that he found
the problem.

So now I have a bag of diabetic food, and all the joys of feeding them
separately.  Even with his e-collar he was able to scarf his own meal
down, then make a beeline for Carrie's.  I know we jokingly refer to her
as Fat Girl, but that doesn't entitle him to "help" her with her diet.

Will keep you posted,

Aww, poor Jasper. Many purrs coming over. Is the vet sure about him being
diabetic, though? Sometimes an injury can play havoc with the blood glucose
of even a healthy person/cat.

Yes, he is.  When we took him in to have the wound seen to, his sugars
were high.  Two weeks down the line his sugars are still very high -
much higher than the vet would expect, even taking the injury into
account.  He made the comment that injury can send them soaring, but not
as high as they were, and the fact that they've not fallen would
indicate diabetes.

He's on diabetic food for a week to see if that helps.  However, he's
quite adamant that Carrie's senior food is much tastier.  For her part,
she wants nothing of senior food and wants diabetic food.  Sheesh.

Awwww, we're sending Jasper healing purrs for his leg, dignity purrs
for the e-collar, and blood sugar stabilizing purrs.

Thanks.  The leg is healing, and he's allowed to go out without the
collar on, but the diabetes is here to stay :-(  However, we're trying
special diet to see if that reduces the glucose enough, otherwise it'll
be down the injection route, oh joy of joys.

I'm sorry to hear Jasper is diabetic, but glad to hear it's been
caught early enough that it can be diet-controlled.  When Hobo was
finally diagnosed, his diabetes had progressed to the point where he
needs insulin twice a day.  He's on a D/M diet and has gained six
pounds, he's over 18 pounds now, which doesn't help the diabetes any.
As someone said re your earlier post, the insulin and diet tends to
increase weight, interfering with treatment.  I wish you better luck
with Jasper - I hope he does well - and wish you luck keeping the
kitties "separated" food-wise!!

See earlier post - Carrie was after his diabetic food this morning.

And whilst he was in the garden surveying his domain, I'm sure I spotted
him snacking on an insect of some description ..... still, that should
be low-sugar, shouldn't it?

Cats - gotta love 'em.

Yes, I see it now.  It hadn't yet shown up when I posted.  I do so
hope that Jasper's diabetes can be diet-controlled.  Purrs for him to
have a good checkup.

Our Speckles, who is a CRF kitty, has her own diet  and will barely
sniff at Hobo's canned D/M but likes to get into his D/M dry kibble, a
definite no-no.  Again, good luck with keeping yours separated!!

I'd say they're mostly protein, not sugar. :o) Good luck with the diets.
Isn't it just typical that they should want to switch. Here are more
sympathy purrs from another diabetic, and from the cats, too.

Many, many purrs coming your way from someone who's been there.

My Fritzie (RB) was diabetic for several years, and we learned to do the
whole drill with special food and insulin and the most beloved chore,
administering pills and trying to keep your fingers intact. Through diligent
monitoring of Jasper's condition you can get him well-regulated.

Feel free to ping me on the group or send a private email if you want to gab
on it or have questions. Louie and I have decided to dedicate ourselves to
working with people with diabetic pets when the need arises. You can do it.

Blessed be,

Baha
