But why are they trying to get cats to mate and produce new litters?
I think it's dangerous to stop encouraging people to spay and neuter,
even if they do have a shortage of cats. Seems to me they could create
a new population explosion in a short time, that way.

Why don't they bring in some of the cats that *already exist* and are
overcrowding the shelters in other areas, instead? That would solve
two problems (the shortage, and the overcrowding), and not run the risk
of creating another wave of overpopulation, which they worked so hard
to eradicate.

I know a lot of USA shelters that would be thrilled to send their over
fill.

That's ironic. Here in the US shelters nationwide have to kill hundreds
of perfectly healthy cats and kittens every day...

So they should send them to this island with a cat shortage.  Perhaps they'd
be willing to pay the import/quarantine fees.

I would contribute some $ for that.

So would I. Just the phrase "cat shortage" boggles my mind. My little brain
just can't comphrehend it.

Really a wonderful story.  They did the right thing.  And now they
have created conditions in which they can-- and want to-- accomodate
kitties who really need homes.  Now every kitty there will be wanted.
I just hope this doesn't make them stop neutering-- people who want
kitties will always be able to find them.

it seems to be they should continue wtih spay/neuter on the island and just
have other shelters deliver their excess kittens to the island shelter. There's
no need to make more kittens when they're still dying in other areas. Some
ferry or airline could foot the bill for transport as a donation.

That's exactly what I said. Why don't we send these posts to the BBC?
Or to the authorities in Guernsey? (I have no idea how one does this,
any suggestions?)

They have a website  bbc.co.uk.  Don't know how you could e-mail them,
though. You'd have to look right through the site.
Hope this helps just a little bit.

A little searching on the web yielded
www.feralcatssanctuary.com

They are in Guernsey. I am sure that they could relay the messages
since the GSPCA does not list a web site or E-Mail address.

It's a really small island.  Not sure what they can do in the bigger scheme
of things as they are nearer to France than the UK.

Thanks! I went there, found their email address, and sent them the
following letter:

Subject: "Cat shortage" in Guernsey

Hello,

I saw the story "Tomcats to boost kitten numbers" posted on the BBC
website on Thursday, 19 August, 2004. Here is the link for the story:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/guernsey/3579344.stm

I'm writing because I'm concerned about your solution to the cat
shortage, which is to bring in intact tom cats to impregnate females
on the island, in order to create a new generation of kittens for
people on the island who want pets.

My question is this: why create new kittens when there are so many
unwanted ones in overcrowded shelters in other cities nearby? Couldn't
you ask other shelters to supply yours with some of their cats and
kittens? That would accomplish two goals at once: supplying cats to
people on the island who want to adopt them, and relieving other
shelters of cats and kittens that might end up being euthanized.

It seems risky to stop encouraging people to spay and neuter. That might
very well create a new wave of overpopulation, which you have worked so
hard to eradicate! I'm sure you know how difficult it is to bring down
cat populations once they start breeding.

If you are not the agency in charge of making this decision, would you
mind forwarding my message to the right place? I would really like to
urge them NOT to bring in any intact cats for breeding, but rather, to
bring in spayed/neutered cats and kittens from other shelters that are
ready for adoption.

Thanks,

Whoops, the email address was mistyped on their website, and the
mail bounced back to me. That address should be:

catlover@feralcatssanctuary.com

In case anyone else wants to write them.

This was the story about the island community of Guernsey in the UK,
where there aren't enough cats in their local shelter to meet the demand
for pets. The story says that they are introducing fertile cats to breed
new litters of kittens to supply them to people.

I wrote a letter to the local animal welfare group in that area, asking
why they didn't just get some cats and kittens from other shelters, which
were probably overflowing?

Here's the response:

Thank you for your email. Am attaching our letter to the editor of
the Daily Mail which discredits their article. We did in fact, do
exactly what you suggest. All bar the youngest 4 kittens who are
under 8 weeks of age, have been rehomed, either spayed or neutered or
are due to be within the next 4 weeks.

Kind regards

It's reassuring to know that the world is probably a saner place than
some of the press would have us believe.
