Worried Sick About Sammy

Sammy has a big lump on her tummy at the site of her surgery.  I'm talking
about the size of a man's thumb.  I noticed after the surgery that she had a
small lump right under her incision, but I didn't worry about that, I
figured is was just internal stitches and maybe some scarring.  But today
when I checked her she stretched out and I found that huge lump.  When I
tried touching it gently she meowed and bit my hand (well, OK, she does that
no matter where I try to touch her unless she's sleepy and wants to cuddle,
but this time it may be from pain - I don't know).  You know what a worry
wort I am, so she's going to the vet first thing in the morning (the NEW vet
I found, not the butcher who did her surgery and hacks the toes off of
innocent cats!).  But in the meantime, do any of you have any experience
with this on newly spayed cats?  The surgery was done on August 12, 10 days
ago.

Thanks for any advice or help you can give me.

Hugs,

CatNipped

I was very worried when my Shadow had abdominal surgery and he had
very lumpy skin where the stitches were, but it was totally normal
and it went away after a week or two. Shadow had stitches from his
lower belly all the way up to his upper abdomen. Purrs for Sammy's
recovery.

Can't help you with any past experience on this, but I would do the same as
you, get her to TED a.s.a.p.  Maybe she has been fiddling with her stitches
and it's a hernia?  Don't panic yet.
Good luck, keep us updated.

I just had a kitten spayed.  During the surgery they found out her ovaries
were cystic.  so needless to say I worried over her immensely.  The vet said
no need.  but the next day her incision had swollen more than Im used to.  I
took her in, and he said she was just having a reaction to the sutures.  A
few days later it was much more swollen, and looked horrid.  I took her back
in, and again I was reassured that it was just the reaction.  A couple days
after that it started to subside, and she looks pretty normal now (and boy
am I going to have a hard time when I give these guys up!!)

YES, that happened to my cat Cellie. He was a male cat they tried to spay (but
that's another story)....this large lump came up at the incision site. I wish I
could remember the medical name for it, but the vet said it was nothing to
worry about. It went away. I hope it's the same for Sammy.

If she doesn't seem to be losing strength, there are so many
possibilities I'd only be guessing. Lots of the possibilities, to
reassure you, may go away on their own.  Part of the problem (aside from
knowing less about feline than human surgery) is we don't know the exact
technique used. While surgeon friends insist that properly used surgical
staples are as good as sutures, I still have seen more inflammation with
staples -- in a small set of patients.

Getting her seen is the best course of action.

I think it's somewhat normal to have some inflamation at the site of
surgery. I would give the vet a call and ask, just to be sure.

I haven't had many cats who were spayed - in fact just LB and my Sammy
- so am not really the best source of information. Anyway, my Sammy
also had a lump for about two weeks, so it sounds like your Sammy's is
much bigger. My Sam's went away over time after her stitches were out,
but don't really remember how long it took to be completely gone.

Anyway, sounds like you're doing the right thing by checking with TED
- the new TED that is. Sending purrs that it will turn out to be
nothing to worry about.

Rosie had a thicker scar after her surgery than I expected.  No sign of it
now.

It seems to me that is normal but it has been a long time. As long as it is
not oozing or angry red, it's probably OK, but give the vet a call or take
her in. No harm in having it checked out.

I have never had a female cat, so can't offer any suggestions.  But I am
sending purrs for it to turn out to be completely normal.

I don't have any advice, but we are sending purrs for it to be nothing.

You've already done what I would recommend, that is, checking it with a vet.
I would just ask, is she eating, behaving and sleeping normally? Does she
appear listless, or withdrawn?  Hopefully, this latest worry will be eased
by Sammy's return to normal.  I hope a temporary reaction to her surgery
will be all it is.

I don't know anything about it, as we've had all boycats until
Tallulah arrived, and we're not spaying her until Hubert's weaned, but
we are sending mighty purrs Sammy's way.  I do hope it's nothing
serious.

OK.  Let us know what TED says.

I was worried about Merlyn after her spay, too.  From what I was told,
as long as the lump is no bigger than a grape, it is probably okay.
If it's more orange size, then you definitely need to get her into the
vet.  Purrs she will be just fine.

I could be a collection of lymph and can be drained.
It could also be a small hernia from a broken stitch.
Whatever it is, purrs that kitty will improve and live a long happy life.
