Victor Martinez - 23 Aug 2004 03:54 GMT Kinda. We were watching TV (can you see a theme for this weekend?) and I had Basho on my chest, his favorite spot. There was a catchy tune that I started whistling (is that the right spelling?). Basho looked at me with really big eyes and proceeded to bat my mouth with his paw. I laughed and tried again, only to be batted again with his paw. I guess he thought I was off-note, which I probably was. :)

I usually speak Swedish to the cats, and when I started reading in English, Nikki carefully came over, sniffed my mouth, and tapped it lightly to make those funny sounds stop coming out of Meowmie's mouth.
Yesterday, Frank did something strange. I have a portable cd player on my kitchen table. Frank had been sleeping on my bed in the other room, and suddenly, he purposefully came into the kitchen, jumped up on the table (I never bothered trying to stop this kind of behaviour), sat down in front of the cd player and stared at it. Then he pressed the top, which opens the cd player. Then he jumped off the table and went back to sleep in the bedroom. And the cd player wasn't even playing! What the...???

Maybe the cats will understand my problem. I only have a smattering of Scandinavian languages, but my Swedish friends are amused that I seem unerringly to try to speak to them in Dansk, while my Danish friends say I speak to them in Svensk. I didn't have any good enough friends in Oslo to tell me what my attempts sounded like, although there was a general preference that I speak English.
Singh - 23 Aug 2004 05:00 GMT Cats definately have musical tastes.
The late great Fritzie liked symphonies, acoustic stuff like that of kd lang and Lisa Loeb, and jazz. He could NOT endure Queen. Absolutely hated them. After about 15 seconds of Freddie Mercury he'd go on a freak fit tearing up the house. He didn't mind Queen as played by the Royal Philharmonic, however.
Stosh is more a rocker, and prefers the progressive rock of earlier generations. He's a Yes/Genesis/Crosby Stills and Nash/Neil Young kind of kitty. Roxie seems more a New Age and world music type. They both like acoustic girl singers and classical.
I learned that cats have musical tasted when Fritzie was a very young lad and ripping my bedroom into a shambles. I was watching PBS and a Liberace special came on. I'll be damned if he didn't plop down and chill when the piano started going. He also came running the the original Star Trek theme came on, and we'd watch it together while I played with him and petted him. There's another difference: Stosh and Roxie are not Trekkies of any sort. They come running for Iron Chef.
Blessed be,
Baha

The late Clifford didn't pay much attention to music, but two things on television fascinated him: Bill Clinton, and animal shows dealing with wolves, coyotes, etc. I refuse to speculate if there was any connection.
He would sit firmly in front of the TV set through the entire State of the Union address, staring.
I knew that as soon as he was mobile, he became part of a pack of puppies and may have believed he was a Brittany Spaniel. In any event, he developed a ritual of running into my office, jumping to the desk, from there to the top of a bookcase, staring at the circular light fixture, doing a reasonable impression of a coyote howling at the moon, then leap from the bookcase to the floor and dart away.

I would have to agree with his tastes, on all of the above. I like the late 90s Lilith Fair female singer-songwriter types myself, I've always liked symphonic classical music, and I can't stand glam rock. Hated it the first time around, still hate it.
> Stosh and Roxie are not Trekkies of any sort. > They come running for Iron Chef. Oh, that's not musical - they're coming for the seafood! :)
Whenever I sing, Smudge comes over to me with a concerned look, as though she believes I might be in pain. I'm not *that* bad a singer!!

Sometimes I will sing exceptionally badly on purpose, and it is so funny to see how it makes no difference to him. What is really funny is when I play the piano, and he walks up and down the keyboard.

I'm really nervous about watching Backdraft now, because I figure it would confuse them without Kaga saying "If my memory serves..."

Took me almost the whole routine to place it. I wonder what that piece is?

I wonder what that piece is? No idea about the names of the individual pieces, but Iron Chef's music is from the movie "Backdraft" (1991; dir. Ron Howard; music by Hans Zimmer; starring Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Robert DeNiro, Scott Glenn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rebecca DeMornay)

Willow is fascinated if I whistle, but I don't think she notices if it's out of tune :-) As she also loves it when I try out different ringtones on my mobile phone, I don't have her down as a music critic of any standing :-)) She gets very excited and runs in to rub against the phone, the tackier the ringtone, the better!

Both Frank and Nikki get really excited by ringtones. If I ever want to get them going, I just have to take out the movile and try out the different ringtones.

He always comes to a whistle, not because I belive he's trained or anything, but the sound arouses his curiosity. ;)

There was a catchy tune that I [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > Send your spam here: uce@ftc.gov > Email me here: pistorLITTER@BOXaustin.rr.com Heh, back in the days when I was taking voice lessons, my teacher was having her home remodeled, and was borrowing places to teach from other friends in San Francisco. During those weeks, she and I were holding my lessons at the home of two cats whose humans had lent Kate the use of their livingroom and piano. I am a soprano with a fairly high range. (At least I had it then..) When I would hit high notes during my lesson, Colonel, the senior Siamese cat would growl and bite the other cat whose name I can't remember. Talk about "everyone's a critic!" Colonel DID seem to like my voice okay when I sang in the normal range, though <G>

I used to have a cat, Geesha, who either loved or hated the sound of my penny whistle; I could never quite tell. She'd always come running and look very excited the few times I played around with it.
Nowadays, when I sing, Trill comes and sits next to me and paws at me. I can't tell if he's saying "Good job, Mommy" or "Ouch! That hurts my ears!" lol!
