Last night I'm sitting here watching TV. It's getting late and the two
furballs are prowling around looking to terrorize something. All of a
sudden I hear this huge commotion down the stairs by my front door. In
my apt. you come into the front door on the ground level and walk up the
stairs inside the apt.
Since I just caught a guy trying to break into my apt 2 nights ago (how
stupid do you have to be to break into a police officer's home)I go
investigate. What do I find but a grey tabby jumping up and down
pouncing straight up and down like a pogo stick. She then takes a final
pounce and it appears that she has caught something. She then looks up
at me with a very puzzled look on her fuzzy face and meows "Daddy! What
the heck happened?" I notice that she has what looks like a very small
yellow tail sticking out of her mouth. In the corner close to her I see
a small yellow gecko without a tail. I swear he has a smile on his
little face and he's giving my cat the "bird". Poor Mouse dropped the
tail and sulked up the stairs and went to bed. She hasn't wandered down
those stairs again. I guess it didn't help that I was almost falling
over laughing at her.
Note: Here in N. Texas we have small yellowish geckos. As a defense
mechanism they will lose their tails so they can run away. The tail will
grow back. Well this is the first time Mouse has ever seen a gecko. I
think she's still trying to figure it out. She's on the window sill
rubbing her chin saying "Hmmmm".

I'd always thought it pretty much a given that burglars and such
aren't exactly the brightest bulbs in the chandelier [in general, I'm
sure there are a few intelligent ones]. :-)

But they're the ones who get away with it, and are never suspected.

Great story! So what did you do to the dummy who was breaking in?
Just a sidenote: way back when in my early 20's I was living in an upstairs
apartment in which I paid a downstairs neighbor to put a deadbolt on my
door; I later found out that this very same person did a break-in on the
other downstairs neighbor's apartment.

I had my gun in one hand and my badge in another. I had already called
911 to get my coworkers enroute. When I announced who I was and that he
was under arrest he said "sh.t. Man let me go. I promise I won't do it
again." Yea right buddy. He was still shaking his head as he was being
driven away.

A house is not a home, without a cat.

Some of our California lizzards do that, too! Does that mean they're
geckos, or is it a common defense for other "brands", also?

I'm not really sure. I think some other lizards lose their tails too.
Our geckos are very tame. You can pick one up and pet it. they love to
have their tummies rubbed but they don't purr. <g> And I've never seen
one try to bite anyone yet.

Funny story! And you're right, who would be dumb enough to break into
the home of a police officer? ::boggle::

I understand that someone rose to either higher heights or deeper
depths, when he and a buddy slowly and systematically broke down the
lock on the back of a black stepvan, apparently with hijacking, or at
least theft, in mind.
Unfortunately, they managed to break into the San Diego Police
SWATmobile, which was fully occupied at the time. Apparently, the Darwin
Award candidates swung open the doors, to see an array of shotgun and
automatic weapon muzzles pointing at them...all with BIG grins above the
sights.
