Today is DH's birthday. At around 6:00 this morning he woke me up and
told me he needed my help. I was somewhat groggy but came wide awake
when he told me, "I need you to help me get this possum out of the
house." Excuse me?!? We don't have a cat flap. How did a possum get
into the house? I'm thinking about this possum I saw outside recently,
eating the birdseed. It had to weigh more than Hobbes did. It was
certainly larger than Hobbes. Of course my second thought was The
Cats!! Are the cats all right? Selena and Lacey heard me wake up and
came back to the bedroom to greet me. I immediately locked them into the
bedroom and went down the hall to find Hobbes. That's when DH showed me
the possum. It was in the front foyer, up against the doorway. A baby
possum. Smaller than Hubert looks in his pictures. It looked like a
kitten with a naked tail. It was the cutest little thing. Fortunately,
the cats never realized it was in the house. Its possible that it came
in from either the furnace room or the laundry room (the only two
locations in the house with access to the outside). DH said he was in
the living room when he saw it come down the hall and turn into the
foyer where I keep bowls of cat food. We cornered it with a blanket and
tried to shooo it out the front door but it wasn't moving. DH reached
down with the blanket and picked it up and set it outside on the front
porch where it promptly wandered off into the yard. It was too young to
even understand it was supposed to be fierce.
I wonder if the cats invited it in to celebrate DH's birthday?

I helped a girl raise a baby possum once. They are really cute.

Wow, that's a lot of excitement for 6 a.m.!! They are cute, aren't they. Did it
hiss at you? They hiss just like cats, and have a wicked awesome set of teeth.
The babies are especially cute. I bet the poor thing was scared to death.

The stories are not at all similar, but it reminds me of the baby
possum that was out in our street one time. This was a real baby, it
may have just started getting around its own and probably had been
carried everywhere on its mother's back till lately. It would have
fit in a teacup.
It was in the street and had been discovered by the neighborhood cats.
We live on a cul-de-sac so there was no traffic to interrupt the cat
party. When we first saw it, the little guy was surrounded by about
five or six cats keeping their distance at about two and a half feet.
They were all doing an 'Alphonse and Gaston' number with each other.
"Oh Meyer, do go first, old man."
"Wouldn't dream of it, dear chap, you go ahead"
"Simply wouldn't think of it! Tootie dear girl, why don't you go
first?"
"Wouldn't hear of it, My Dear. Do have the first turn!"
At this point, DH and I were just watching and seeing as the cats were
all busy deciding who would get first crack at the little guy, we just
continued to watch. There was also the 'wild animal' factor operating
-- We didn't want to pick up it up bare-handed.
Then Richard, Doris' late husband, came out of the neighboring house.
He had his gardening gloves on and, much to the dismay of the cats,
scooped the thing up. We knew at least where the mother had been
gaining entrance to the area, through a hole in a fence where she
would come in and go round sampling the food that was out for feral
kitties. Richard, a genuine animal lover, put the thing back through
the fence and shooed it along.
Then the three of us proceeded to shoo the cats away. The way they
looked at Richard, there was no doubt that they were busy thinking bad
kitty words about him. At least the little thing got a chance to live
till the next day.

Interesting. I've had possums inside my house a time or two, and in my
garage several times. Possum(s) and cats seemed to be mildly interested
in each other, but none showed either fear or aggression. OTOH, one
evening Lindy refused to go out through the garage, because there was a
possum behind the washer. There has been one there other times, and her
usual procedure was to freeze and stare for a minute, then proceed on
her way. This time she really seemed scared, which surprised me.

What an exciting morning! Maybe the possum wanted to wish Happy birthday to
your husband ;)
Best wishes,
