Also, Hazel is busy with 2 jobs and a boyfriend.  She reads Catslaves but
not the NG, so you may try to ping her there.  Sometimes she's on Yahoo
messenger for chat.
Dave S only posts occasionally, but I thought I saw a post from him within a
week or so.
I'd really like to hear from Jen (Jepo).  I bet she's busy and not reading
the NG.  I wonder if she's still in Calgary because if so, I'd like to see
about getting together with her and Susan M when I *finally* get over there
for a visit, in October.

Hi, is Jen. I heard that perhaps some people were wondering where the heck
I was!  I haven't really been readying any newsgroups lately.

I'm still in Calgary, but wouldn't you know it we're all moving next month
(that sounds about right for us, moving once per year!  Kid and Muggles are
3 and about to move into their 5th home/apartment - Inky, it's his first go
at a move and lengthy car trip).  Pete and I love/loved Calgary a lot - I
was so happy moving back here (especially into a townhouse). So, naturally
the drama continues, and we move to San Francisco next month because I got
a job there (very happy about). Have to finish up writing another book
before then though, so as usual the paniced rush.

So the cats, what's probably the main interest (if any...!!). Oh, Muggles -
I noticed that that was posted :)  He was shaved because he had mats in his
fur. There were a bunch of them around his lower-back/bum region and I just
couldn't get them out (and he HATES being brushed, particularly around the
tail... part of the problem). He's the cat who will scream bloody murder
after you pull a comb through him a couple times (with no mats). Getting
him shaved was the right choice, we discovered - he seemed much more
chipper and lively after we got it done (after the initial tragedy with the
shaver - he hated it, but it did pay off). Plus, we don't have all the
fur/shedding issues now - and with his big trouble last year with being
bunged up from fur, we avoided that potential issue too. So we're probably
going to do it each year, and the lady said they get used to it to some
extent. Anyway - his fur is still really short, and he looks pretty good
that way to boot :)  Muggles is still pretty dumb though - but Muggles and
Inky (aka "boycats") are still the best of buddies (their difference in
smarts, size and personality works to their advantage, I think - as far as
you can intellectualize that stuff).

Inky is still SO small for a cat. He's 1 yr 5 months old, and still way
smaller than Kid. I think he stopped growing a long time ago too. He wears
a harness a lot, and we haven't made it bigger since we bought it in
January. And I can still fit my fingers through!  He's very wiry, and
certainly not underfed (he has a small paddle too). So I guess he just
decided to quit growing - and honestly that's pretty good because he likes
to try to escape out the door (he LOVES outside) and he's easier to handle
when he does make a run for it. He's SO agile - he walks along our
bannister all the time, and it's only an inch wide - and we can't stop
him....  This little dude is insane.  He's a bit of a spook, and not
outwardly friendly with other people. He's terribly confident, but spooks
very easily - if that makes any sense. He will eventually make friends with
strangers, the very same evening, but it takes awhile and out of nowhere
he'll come and sit in your lap. Our cat sitter still couldn't even touch
him for the entire week she looked after them at Christmas, even though she
came here to feed them! Same deal when she came here a few days when I flew
to SF for my interviews (a set of 12, if you can believe it).

Inky has turned into one of those sneaky avid hunter cats - he adores
outside, and will go hunting at the end of a leash (though he doesn't have
a hope in hell of catching a bird, he'll try and leap 4 feet in the air
believing he could catch one at eat it). *moth warning* Kid is our moth
hunter - each night she goes out on the balcony and waits for moths to
arrive, and then she brings them inside - and she's very good at it. I have
learned to dispise moths like the other moth-haters here. She always
catches huge ones, and I'll shriek when she carts them up here to the
computer room to release and chase them. She will eat them, which is so
terribly disgusting - I want her to though, to get rid of the damn things!

Kid and Muggles still hate each other. Kid doesn't like Inky, and we
couldn't leave them together, but she doesn't despise him. She *hates*
Muggles, and won't even tolerate him to look at. About a year of this now -
they haven't co-existed, and despite complete separation, there's no
change. I think the damage was done... sometime. So, she spends her days
with us in the computer room, or (usually) in the bedroom. She knows that
each night the boys go to bed (she hears us prepare them for bed, and
starts meowing), and then she's let out to hunt moths for the njght. It's a
pretty good system - they all know the system, and she's happy as a clam
being an "only cat" in a sense. She knows they're out there, and she's ok
with it as long as they don't touch her or invade her rooms. She seems a
lot happier in general though, happier than I've ever known her. And so
much more personality (which is saying a lot, because she already had a lot
of it!)  - I just love Kid to bits. So I guess it was meant to be.

So that's the complication with moving again - finding a good apartment for
cat-segregation. We're planning on finding a place with a walk-in closet
and ensuite for Kid, so she has more room in *her* bedroom. What we do for
cats, eh? The boycats are actually going with my parents to live in B.C.
for a couple months, so we don't have to take them in the car together, and
battle it out in the temporary housing (now THAT would be tough!) My
parents then drive them down to the new place in November. Kid comes with
us (but loves the car and changes, so she'll be fine). Muggles is used to
all this, so although it's not his preference, he should be fine too - it's
Inky though that will be the big question mark. But he's resiliant - I'm
sure he won't mind too much.

So that's the news from here! Oh my goodness this is long - bet yer all
sorry you asked ;)

Take care, and thanks - is very nice to hear that some people are wondering
where you are - it's rare that it happens, so it's much appreciated.

Regards,
Jen, Muggles, Kid, Inky.

So good to hear from you, Jen!  I'm very happy to hear about your new job;
hope all goes well with your move and that you'll keep checking in here from
time to time!  Miss you!

Our cat household reminds me of yours -- Midnight and Tucker are always in
competition for who's dominant and we've had several visits to the vet to
fix up some bad scratches because of it, so for now when I leave the house,
either Tucker gets put up or Midnight, Omar, & Oreo - we switch off.  I hope
this will end eventually.  When we're home we just keep a constant watch on
everyone.

Hugs and purrs to you!
Christine and
Omar, Oreo, Midnight, Robin & Tucker

Oh it's so crazy isn't it!  Kid will put Inky in his place (he kind-of
listens), but just goes completely submissive with Muggles and doesn't
defend herself (anymore). Maybe one day though - maybe she'll forget in 5
years :)  I can totally relate with the whole leaving the house and making
sure the cats are all "arranged" - and all the doors clicked shut :D

<snip lots of excitement>

Great to hear from you Jen, it sounds like you've finally fallen on your
feet again, I'm so glad, and we are all purring our loudest that it works
out. Gotta keep those furry masters in luxury and comfort, haven't we?

The Yowlet arrived 4 months ago (I can't believe its been that long) and
although Joel and I are obviously biased, we think he's the cutest thing
ever (dont' tell Shmogg of course)

Shmogg has adaptd very well to the intruder, after all, it means more milk
is avaliable for his benefit (how else is one suppoed to rid oneself of the
milk a baby doesn't drink in the bottle?) and has worked out a system of
gettign second breakfast which involves howling he place down at the 4am
feed, and hten doing it again at the 8am feed. If the adult humans arne't
really awake at 4am (who is?) then they'll often forget that they've already
done the breakfast run and feed him again. Otherwise, he's still his ornerr
self, and spends most of his day out of ear shot of the wailing one, but
still sleeps with me at night. I call him my furry grey bed buddy. But he
does hop out of bed whenever I feed Cary, he's nto stupid.

Fluffy has mixed feelings about her bare puppy, after all he doesn't know
how to destroy socks with her yet so isn't much use. She's interested and
*very* protective, but is wary because we kept saying "no" very shaprly to
her when he first came home, otherwise the poor boy would have been utterly
smothered in doggy drool and hair from the getgo. I'm sure she'll come
around once Cary learns how to throw things, though. After all, every boy
needs a doggy best friend.

That about it for us, I gotta run, these days I odn't have much time for
typing long missives, this is about as good as it gets!

Here's hoping that life finally settles down for you folks and the furkids
can sort it all out,

Yep - have to keep the nip in constant supply, and bring the odd Panic
Mouse home! See, they just expect it now!

Now *that* is exciting news!  I've had an RPCA guardian angel keep me up to
date with important news, and of course we were sent a pictures link
immediately after the big event. I was definitely smitten with the Yowlet
right after his arrival.:)  The biggest congratulations from our brood!!
And we'll keep our fingers crossed for Fluffy that the bare puppy works on
that throwing arm!

Hugs,
Jen.

Welcome to the Bay Area! Warning: you're going to experience some
serious sticker shock when you go hunting for a dwelling. Whereabouts
are you planning to look? San Francisco proper is quite expensive, but
there are other places not directly in the city that are a bit more
affordable.

What's your new job going to be?

Thanks!  Yeah, we've been searching craigslist and such, and it's a little
insane!  A bit reminicient of Vancouver and Toronto- but a seriously
beautiful area to make up for it. We're not too sure where we're going to
look yet - thankfully the relocation package includes a month in temporary
housing. We're kind of thinking an easy commute to work (SOMA) would be
important (I'll be doing some long hours), but it completely depends on
neighbourhood walkthroughs (my interview trip consisted of 90% interviews
and 10% tourist-time).  Do you have any recommendations of good
neighbourhoods to look in?

> What's your new job going to be?

Technical writing (software documentation).

SOMA is probably pricey because it has that hip, arty cachet. But the
Mission district isn't far from there and, although there's been a lot
of gentrification in that neighborhood, there are probably some affordable
places still. Also, another neighborhood called Bernal Heights is nearby
and has its pockets of affordability (interspersed with expensive places).
It's also a wonderful neighborhood. Both of these are sunny neighborhoods.

The further west you go in the city, the cheaper rents are, because it
gets more foggy out there by the beach. Downside is, it's foggy. :) Also,
it's not all that close to SOMA, but public transit is great in SF and
you wouldn't have any trouble getting to work from there.

At least now you won't be fighting hordes of people for an apartment - a
few years ago, apartment-hunting was more like a cattle call. I think
that house-hunting is still a bit like that - the real estate market is
still booming for some reason. But rentals have really cooled off, even
though the rents themselves haven't come down all that much.

Would you consider living in the East Bay and taking public transit to
work?

Ooooo oooo ooo!!! That's my line of work, too! Congratulations on
getting the job. And they offered relocation benefits, too? Wow, I
didn't think anyone did that anymore.

Wow - thanks for the information - that's great to know!  I was wondering
about Bernal Heights, becuase I've seen a couple very nice (and
comparatively affordable) places there. It's great to know about the
neighbourhoods that are close by, and particularly about the public
transit. I was wondering how efficient / quick it would be from the outer
neighbourhoods (it does seem a bit cheaper out that way).

No kidding - I came across some interesting stories of people who were
unfairly evicted during the tech-boom days, just so the landlords could
increase rent. Yikes.

> Would you consider living in the East Bay and taking public transit to

I think so - we were thinking of trying out the transit and seeing how long
it would take. On average, do you know how long/convienient the commute is
from the East Bay areas?

It's just so unfortunate about the timing (we're probably leaving around
the middle of Sept.-ish)!  :(  I hope the weather is better for you than it
is right now - it's around 10 here at the moment (and it's daytime), we
even had to turn on the heat. Great for us personally (cool house to work
and clean in!) but would suck for vacationing.

I never fully understood the aversion to moths until Kid started carting in
the giant ones. And she purposefully brings them right up to us in this
small room too. We can hear her start with the "closed-mouth meowing" at
the bottom of the stairs all the way up (its my warning - closed mouth meow
means a moth is in the mouth). Blech!!  So I'm in your camp now.

Scritches to Vino!

I don't know, Nikki seems to have mellowed quite a bit lately. Maybe it's a

Yesterday I finally heard from a friend who lives in Punta Gorda. He'd
just gotten his phone service back, but still has no electricity. The
house had some minor damage but was definitely liveable, and the
family was safe (whew!)

I hope all our hurricane-related MIA catslaves and masters are MIA
because they can't get online due to no electricity or phone and not
for reasons worse!

My SIL lives in Punta Gorda.  She had phone service (underground
wires), but no electric.  She lost her carport and shed and the lanai
on the other side of the mobile home.  One window was broken out, but
the mobile home was livable.  She also lost Honeybun, her little cat
that was in the lanai.  She's hoping that Honeybun survived and is
just too scared to come home.

Thanks, Steve.  I haven't talked to her since last Sunday so don't
know whether Honeybun came back.  She's staying with her niece in
Jacksonville until she finds out what the insurance company is going
to do.  Her mobile home is an older model and will probably be totaled
since it would cost more than it is worth to bring it up to code.

I'm glad to hear your SIL is safe, and the damage to her home wasn't
too bad. I hope Honeybun will turn up safe as well.

Thanks, Christine and all your furkids.  This has been quite a
traumatic experience for all concerned.  I'll let the SIL know that
purrs are being sent for Honeybun's safe return.

We'll sure be purring for Honeybun. Cats that get outside under normal
conditions shift into survival mode and their behavior alters radically.
I can just imagine what a poor, scared kitty would do when he/she was
outside due to hurricane damage. Please do let us know when you hear more.

Thanks, Dan.  Honeybun was a starving kitten when he showed up on her
doorstep a couple of years ago.  She had to keep him out on the lanai
because Winnie, her other cat, hated him.  She's seen Winnie since the
hurricane, but not Honeybun (as of last Sunday).

Thank you.  There have been so many animals that have been displaced
by this.  My SIL has hopes that as long as they don't find Honeybun's
broken little body that he'll come home eventually.

I don't know which would be worse, living in a hurricane area or in
tornado alley.  Although, at least with a hurricane you know it's
coming ahead of time, unless, of course, it does what Charley did and
turn.

Huge purrs and prayers that he has survived, poor little lad.  Both mine are
tucked up safely in home tonight.   Makes me feel humble that we hardly ever
get such extreme weather.
Best of luck for all that were affected.

Bev is still oversea's, she will be back in NZ on the 1st Sept. I have rung
Kay (the lady looking after Bev's house and kitties a couple of times to
check if all is OK) she tells me that B&C have her running around in
circles, love to sleep with her (which Bev and John don't allow) and she
said you can bet your bottom dollar that if she has an appointment in town
one of them will get up on the roof ( 5 minutes before she is due to leave)
and refuse to come down!! Just as well she is a good catslave!
