Tallulah & Hubert & TED

LOL - 19 Aug 2004 07:00 GMT
Tallulah and Hubert made their first visit to TED today, and we were
thrilled to have a good checkup.  No FeLV, no FIV - not even ear
mites!  Tallulah does have an intestinal parasite, as quite expected,
but otherwise these are two perfectly healthy kitties.  I didn't
realize how much I was all but expecting bad news until I didn't get
any.

Tallulah is 10.25 pounds, and TED estimated her age at possibly a
little over a year.  I noticed on her rabies certificate that he gave
her an arbitrary birthdate of March 1, 2003.  It'll do.  :-)   I
wasn't expecting to get her shots today, as she is still nursing
Hubert, but TED said we could go ahead. She was her sweet self during
the exam - no biting, no clawing - but made it clear she was *not*
having a good time by some very impressive squirming, to the extent
that even wrapped in a towel it took two techs to hold her for TED to
draw blood, and even so it took him three tries.   Now we have 14 days
of wormer to get through, and a spay when Hubert's weaned, and that
will be all the Bad Stuff for this little girl for a long time.  Yay!

Hubert, 26 days old, weighed 2 pounds. (!!!)  He was undaunted by TED,
but of course *everything* is a new experience for Hubert, so he's
quite non-judgmental.  ;-)   We'll be taking him back in about 3 weeks
for his shots; he didn't even need worming!  At one point TED was
holding Hubert in the air and looking at him with that dispassionate
clinical look when he said, a little grudgingly, "You *are* cute."
LOL!

The tech said she thought Hubert will be long haired like his mom - I
hadn't really noticed, because he's still so kitten-fuzzy, but now
that she mentioned it I do see that it is a longish sort of fuzz.  He
is climbing higher every day (I am soon going to have to put
breakables away altogether, as there will be no place high enough for
them) and his toddle is turning into an actual run.  Tallulah's
definitely got her paws full with this little guy, and DH and I are
wondering whether that storage shed is not actually a secret lab
breeding mutant superkittens.  Maybe we should worry.  Maybe we should
*all* worry.

Few things as hair-raising as a kitten whose mobility has outstripped
his powers of reason.  Up the curtains, up the tree, up your legs,  up

But one of those few things is a teen age boy with just about the same
attitude to life.

Ah, invincible teen age boy syndrome.  They don't outgrow it until
they're in their twenties, you know.  Worse is whiney teen fit girl
syndrome.  I'll swap you, one teen aged girl for one teen aged boy, and
raise you a Pine Cone.

Not hardly.  The girls come over to visit of course.  About 10 minutes of
the screeching and I turn off my hearing aid and go in my room.

Having raised two daughters, I'm only too aware of what they can be like at
home.  Enough to make one understand why some animals kill their young.

Yay, great news, healthy kitties. Better keep an eye on that storage shed in
case super mutant kittens start to appear in hordes.

So happy to learn that Talllulah and Hubert have received a clean bill
of health.  Ummm, Krista, Tallulah is 10.25 pounds at just over a
year?!? She's going to rival Hobbes in size! I look forward to your
updates on Tallulah and Hubert, please keep them coming.

Heh.  Tallulah is getting to be *quite* well-padded, despite tapeworms
and nursing a two-pound kitten.  I have a feeling that soon after
Hubert is weaned Tallulah may find herself eating the same low-cal
food as the office boys.

It was Hubert's weight that stunned me.  A table in a home vet
handbook gives average weight for his age as 10 to 13 ounces.  Is that
right?!?  He's 32 ounces!

What on earth have I gotten myself into?   ;-)

Debt, buy stock in your favorite brands of cat food and litter, so that
you can afford to feed him.

Thanks!  I don't mind top-posting myself, and I don't believe anyone
in the group is about to make a fuss about it.  Get some sleep.   ;-)

they are such a cute mom and son act :)

Tallulah is looking pretty swanky these days and filling out. A normal

WOW!  Nice pics.  Blimey, he's absolutely HUGE!!

Mom reminds me of a cat I had as a child.
He was an old entire tom who I found under our garden hedge almost at
death's door through starvation.  My mom and I used to call him Pooey Pruey
as he smelt pretty bad, but he would always wait for me to come home from
school and liked me to carry him over the threshold.  He made that nice
chirrup  Prrruuuey? when he saw me.
He was not housetrained.  If we kept him in overnight he used to poo in my
shoes.  You could only pet the top of this head otherwise he would slash you
and mean it.
That was my experience with cats, so I thought they always scratched and
bit. Kitty FC does too and I thought it was normal.  Boyfriend is a
revelation.  He does not scratch or bite and when he invites you to tickle
his tummy he means it.  It's not a trick so he can grab you and sink his
claws in.

We lost Pruey when we moved.  He wouldn't settle in the new house and kept
running away.  Found him twice and brought him back but he would have none
of it.  The third time we never found him back at the old house although we
visited daily for about a month.
I hope someone took him in again, poor old smelly lad.  We tried to get him
neutered but the vet said he was too old and it would be too risky.

It is always such a relief to hear that news. *whew* I'm sort of
surprised they didn't opt to worm Hubert, though. He must be a
superkitty!  lol (reading the below text)

(snippage)

I'm thankful they didn't opt to worm Hubert.  We gave Tallulah her
first dose this afternoon.  We did manage to get *most* of it down
her, but I believe we may need those two techs and their towel to make
housecalls.  Sheesh.  And only 13 more doses to go!

There is something great here in UK called Stronghold.  It's a spot on for
the back of the neck and it's safe.  It wipes out worms, fleas and earmites
in one go.  I use it for mine as there is no way I could dose or pill them.
It isn't cheap, though, about 6 quid a dose.  I've found it very effective,
can you get it where you are?  It would be much easier for you and her.  One
dose required repeated monthly.

We dose the office boys with something called Frontline Plus, which
sounds similar - a monthly dose on the back of the neck.  Tallulah and
Hubert will be getting it too, once Hubert is old enough, 8 weeks per
the package insert.  The Frontline is only for fleas and ticks,
though; Tallulah has (peering at medicine bottle label) spirometra,
which is a kind of tapeworm.  I've never heard of something applied
externally which will cure worms; it could be a preventative instead
of something to cure an active infestation.  Anyway, I will ask our
vet about it, as it turns out that Tallulah is *very* hard to medicate
and that would surely be easier.  I got spoiled with my RB Mikey, who
was very good about taking liquid meds.

Thought I'd better look on the box in case I had got hold of the wrong end
of the stick ;-)
This is what it says:  stronghold  45 mg (selamectin)
Indications:  Treatment and prevention of of flea infestation caused by
Ctenocephalides spp; use as part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy
dermatitis; prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis;
treatment of ear mites (otodectes cynotis);  treatment of adult roundworms
(Toxocara cati) and adult intestinal hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme)

Then instructions etc.
It's made by Pfizer  and comes in weight appropriates dosages. Not for under
8 weeks.
Hope this helps.

Stronghold is only effective for one type of worm, I'm almost certain
it's roundworm. I don't belive there are any topical treatments for
tapeworm.

See my previous post quoting what was on the box, and you're right,
tapeworms aren't mentioned.

Btw, Boyfriend is on my armchair doing upside downy head.  Awwwww.  It's
great to see him so relaxed and confident as only a few months ago he would
run away as soon as I opened the back door.  He even let my brother touch
him the other day!!  A complete stranger and a man (eeek)
Lots of progress.
