Mischief - 18 Aug 2004 06:51 GMT
Mischief arrives at Captain Pine Cone's quarters.  Being a cat, and
therefore unable to knock, she reaches up and lightly scratches the
door.

"Who is it?"
"Mischief, sir.  I have a question."
"Please come in."

Mischief enters and her eyes widen. On one side of the room was a
kitty drinking fountain full of crystal clear water.  Next to it was a
large sun lamp, and beneath it was a large pillow.  Upon sniffing it,
Mischief realized that the cushion was full of  feathers, with just a
hint of catnip.  Next to that was a small table with a tiny box.  The
odor told Mischief that it was full of premium catnip.  Must the
captain's personal stash, she thought.

There were several smaller cushion throughout the room.  On the other
side was an enormous cat tree with several levels.  Next to that was
another table with a saucer and a bottle of cream.  The floor was
covered with all kinds of balls.  And in the center of the room was a
large coffee table.  No, wait, it was an aquarium.  Wait a minute, it
was an aquarium SHAPED like a coffee table.  Mischief walked up and
began looking at the fish as they darted to and fro.

"Feel free to paw at the fish all you want, but please, no pouncing."

Mischief turned in time to see Cap'n Pine Cone emerging from behind a
curtain.  Mischief saluted and was about to compliment Cap'n Pine Cone
about the aquarium when she heard a whirring noise.

"Oh, don't mind that.  It's just the automated litter box.  Please,
pull up a cushion.  How do you like the Mouser?"
"Erm, it's quite amazing Cap'n.  It's a lot better than I expected."
"Aye, she's a fine ship.  Just wait until we take her round the coast
of El Pesca Gordo.  It's a treacherous area, but child's play for the
Mouser.  Now you had a question?"
"Yes, sir.  I was simply taking a tour of the ship, and I was
wondering if there are any areas that are off limits?"
"Hmmm, most of the ship is open to any feline.  But, yes, there are a
few areas, I would prefer you or any of the new cats stayed away
from."

He paused, and lightly batted a ball.

"On the lower level there are the food stores.  Nikki is in charge of
all kitty food and treats, which are only given out during meal times.
I don't care how hungry you are, but there is no unauthorized
snacking.  Remember, the 'I'm starving' techinque we use on hoomins?
It doesn't work on this ship, especially against Nikki, so no begging.
And don't even think of trying to steal a snack unless you want to be
missing a few whiskers.

If you wish to go after a bird or if you spy an errant mouse or vole
on board, notify either Frank or Waffles.  Now mind you, Frank is a
beautiful tom, but don't even think about rubbing or sniffing him
unless you want to face Waffles.

If you get seasick or need medical attention, see Kitty Schottland or
Selena.

Now I know you're named Mischief for a reason, and it's feline nature
to inspect everything.  But stay out of trouble.  We have a rough trip
ahead of us, and the last thing I need is a feline who so much as
steps a toe out of line, understand?"

"Aye, Aye, sir!"

"Good.  Enjoy your tour.  Dismissed."

Mischief hears a familiar buzzing and looks up to see a very large
kitten transporting to the ship.  The kitten, a female moggy with
predominantly Maine Coon heritage, spins around to stare wide-eyed at
Mischief.  "Hullo!" she cries, "did I do it right, am I really here?"
"Why yes, you are obviously here you silly twit," Mischief replies,
"where else would you be?"  "Why, there!  And everywhere!  I'm a
kitten, of course you know that I can be in several places at once!"
the kitten replied indignantly.  "Who are you," Mischief demanded,
"and why are you here?"  "My hoomin-given name is Sammy," the kitten
responded, "but my real name is Ssisssppptheowmy.  I'm here to be a
cabin-kitty and train to be a pirate!"  "Lives-for-trouble!!" Mischief
translated.  "Oh my, just what this voyage needs!  Well, you didn't
bring aboard any gear, so go and report to stores and have the purser
issue you some sailor's togs and rough-weather gear."

"Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!" Sammy jumped up and down and around Mischief
pausing occasionally to swipe at Mischief's tail.  "Stop that!"
Mischief demanded, "You'll keep proper discipline aboard this vessel
or suffer the consequences."  "Consekw.. consekens.. um what's that?"
Sammy looked at Mischief in puzzlement.  "Look, just because your
hoomin mommy spoiled you unconscionably does not mean that you will
get away with the same behavior here.  The captain needs a proper
cabin-kitty to attend to his needs, and you will shape up or sip out."
Mischief said sternly.  Sammy lowered her tail a notch and tried to
look sorry, but Mischief could tell by the twitching of the tip of her
tail that this one was going to be trouble.

"Please don't send me home," Sammy pleaded, "I just had a turrible
sssurjury and I need a long sea voyage to get better again."  Mischief
saw that Sammy's front leg and belly were recently shaved and relented
a bit.  "OK scruff, just tone it down a notch or two."  Sammy
immediately perked up and tore off down the passageway, jumped up the
wall at the far end, did a back flip and tore back down the passageway
to skid to a stop in front of Mischief again.  Mischief sighed and
gave Sammy directions to stores then walked away shaking her head.
This was going to be a looooong and interesting voyage.

"Avast ye swabs," meowed Smokey.  Smokey was the Bos'n and chief of
the deck and sail crews.  "We be comin' about and crossin' the wind
and I'll see it smartly done or be knowin' the reason why.

"Ready about!" bellowed the large Russian Blue.  "Deck crew stand by
the sheets!  (sheets being the ropes that held the sails in position
and taut to the wind)!  "Come about Mr. Steersman!  Deck crew loosen
the starboard sheets and haul in the ports!"

"She's heading up into the wind nicely Mr. Bos'n," remarked the
striking green-eyed tabby who, being a veteran of several Mouser
voyages, had the privilege of steering the ship.

"Arrgh!" replied the Blue.  It would be when the bow had crossed the
wind and the starboard sheets were let out and the port sheets hauled
taut that would tell the story of the maneuver.

Easing the sheets on the starboard side of the deck went well.  The
ship had crossed the wind and now needed the port sheets hauled tight.
The gang  of cats assigned the duty took the coiled lines and
proceeded to haul out the slack.  This being a ship rigged out with
mainsails, gallant sails above those, top gallant sails, and crowning
the masts were the royals.  Multiply this by three masts and this was
a lot of lines to keep track of.  Things went well till the gang was
about half done.

Someone had blundered and a kitten on her first voyage was somehow put
in charge of the coiling up the end of the line that the cats were
hauling in.  Slowly the coil of line began to look like a ball of yarn
instead of a seamanlike coil of line for storage

Things would still have gone all right though had not a somewhat
'fluffy' Seal Point tried to squeeze past the kitten on the gangway.
The coil of line that now resembled even more a ball of yarn slipped
out of the kitten's paws and went rolling down the deck, line
uncoiling out behind it.  Suddenly cats were not paying attention to
their work, but watching the ball roll down the deck.

The first to succumb to the lure of a familiar-looking toy was a
Tuxedo male.  He let go the line he was holding and took off down the
gangway.  The ball of line in the meantime had become tangled in a
snaggle-toothed old tom's tail and as the line gripped his tail, it
startled him into a kitten-jump and he took off across the ship
dragging the ball down the starboard rail.

Suddenly there were cats running in all directions on the deck.
Instead of hauling on the lines, cats were batting them about tangling
them into a huge snarl.

"Belay there!  Back to hauling in those sheets," shouted Smokey in
vain.  Smokey knew there would be hell to pay.  Suddenly Cap'n Pine
Cone appeared on the quarter-deck.  "Mr. Bos'n, what's the meaning of
all this?" bellowed the captain.  "Sorry sir, no excuses" said Smokey,
knowing that the captain would accept none in any case.

"Well, just get this under control as soon as you can.  The crews a
little green yet, but I'll not be so lenient if there's a next time."

Smokey turned to the deck where the action had stopped at the sight of
the imperious Pine Cone.  It was going to be a long day.

Later, Cap'n Pine Cone esq. sat at the head of the low benches where
individual bowls of kitty kibble, canned food, and fresh cooked
swordfish were placed so that each kitty could help him/herself.  A purr
to Bast for the well being of all cats at sea and on land was sent up by
all the crew members and individual friends were purred for.  Many good
friends had gone to the bridge in the past year and all of the cats
wanted them to know that they would never be forgotten.

Mischief looked around the galley.  It was on the second deck and well
equipped with huge stove, refrigerator, and microwave.  A large
dishwasher was set up for the humans to wash both their dishes and those
of the cats.  Cupboards with all sorts of dinner dishes and drinking
bowls lined the walls.  Through an open door one could see a large well
equipped pantry.  Water fountains were placed at various parts of the
room.  Everything one could think of for the dining comfort of the cats
and crew members was there.  Mischief ate his fill, relaxed, and then
burped gently.  Life was good.

We have really enjoyed this tail; the shared efforts so purrfectly
starting up with each new addition to the story. This part above
though, made me a bit misty thinking of all of the bridge kitties in
the last year.

Good work guys!
