Skittish Weeble (long & a part OT)

Magic Mood Jeep? - 14 Aug 2004 18:46 GMT
Early in July, DH & I took a 2-day/1-night mini-vacation to the Cincinnati
area (left 8am on 7/6, returned 5pm on 7/7, it was our 11th anniversary, and
DH needed the getaway after working through that strike at the factory where
he works).  Before  leaving, I had plugged in *2* feliway diffusers, one in
our bedroom, one in the living/dining room, in hopes that it would dispel
the hostility between Lizzie & Smokey (Smokey growls at Lizzie whenever she
spies her, therefore causing Lizzie to become really hostile - I'm talking
chase-each-other, tail-fluffing, screaming-at-each-other hostility).  It
seems to have worked - just a tad.

The problem is that Weeble seems to be extremely skittish now.  Half the
time when he walks through a room, it's in a half-crouch, as if he's afraid
of something. If I carry him to bed at night, he will crouch near the edge
until he gets a feel that everything is all right, and then curl up on a
corner.  If I reach over to pet him, he jumps as if startled.  I think he
might be smelling this feliway and thinking it's another cat he can't find.

I have just removed the diffusers (they are in an 'airtight' Ziploc baggie
to keep the scent in)and am waiting to see if Weebs returns to normal now.

The only other thing I can think of would be the resident 'coon that won't
leave our attic.  If it is the 'coon, I guess a call to animal control or a
pest-control company is in order.  I'm not going up in that attic - it's not
easily accessible (only access is from outside the house, and you need a
15-foot ladder to get there), and creepy up there (as is the basement -
house was built in 1925).

Purrs for the Weeble to become the calm little fuzzybuddy he was before.

On another note, DH has a job offer from a company in town, Sabin
(http://www.sabincorp.com/).  Sabin is a pharmaceutical appliance
manufacturer, which is owned locally by the Cook Group, Inc
(http://www.cookgroup.com/index.html), and the parts that Sabin manufactures
is used by Cook in the manufacture of their products.  Cook is one of Monroe
County's largest employers.  They own several other companies,  and a lot of
apartment & rental properties (first apartment I ever had here was owned by
them - or rather their subsidiary, CFC).  They are offering him a salary
that will be LESS than what he makes where he is now.  It's actually more,
but he gets paid overtime now, but at Sabin, there's no overtime, so it
works out to be less.  On the plus side, he will have a 5 minute drive to
work, instead of the 30 minute drive he has now, so there's the
less-gas-in-the-vehicle aspect (and the Land Rover has a large tank, almost
$40 a pop to fill it every 3-4 days).  the downside is that his current
employer gave him a 20% raise to STAY there after they got wind about the
downstate Toyota plant interviewing him (that was BEFORE the strike - and we
haven't heard a word from them since), and he feels bad about that.  He will
also miss a lot of his co-workers, but he's not like working there since the
strike ended (striking workers used a lot of profanity and hostility toward
the salaried workers that had no choice in the matter - there were a lot of
racial slurs, and there is a group of (ethnic) salaried workers that are now
suing the union... it goes on & on), so I've been telling him that we can
make it on what Sabin is offering, if need be I can get a part time job
somewhere (except fast-food, I've always refused to work fast-food, and
Target - I only gave a one-week notice when I left there for my last job,
and that put me on a "no-rehire' status)  Even if it's just for the
holidays, unloading trucks & stocking shelves, I can manage it.  We'll
survive.  We've been through worse - but still DH is a worrywart.  He
already thinks we'll have to get rid of the Land Rover (we only have 2 more
years to pay it off) and get a cheaper vehicle..... his mind never quits
thinking of things like that.

Purrs for DH to accept new position & to STOP BEING A WORRYWORT!!!

I don't know how prone raccoons are to chewing on wires, but I would
recommend having the raccoon evicted fairly soon, and closing up
however he got in.  Given the size of raccoons, the opening should be
fairly obvious.  I had a house fire in February 2003 that was
apparently caused by squirrels getting into a wall and chewing on the
electric wiring.

It's only been a DAY since I removed the Feliway diffusers and already he's
becoming a bit more active.  He let a few of the kittens chase him up & down
the tower (well, actually, they chase him to the top of the tower, where he
reigns supreme, 'slapping' at any kitten that tries to usurp him).  And this
afternoon he played with a fuzzy mouse (one of the one's that has longer fur
than the regular ones - made from rabbit fur), and chased it when I threw
it, then Moe got into it and the Tower game began.

If he keeps improving, the Feliway diffusers are going eBay - maybe ;)

That's really strange. I've never heard that Feliway could have that effect,
just the opposite. Have to keep that in mind.

Same here - I thought it would help him to adjust to his baby sibs, but it
just confused him, I think.  He's doing much better in the living/dining
room, but the bedroom he's still skittish about - could be because bedroom
vents don't put out as much as the rest of the house (central heating/air
conditioning) so it might take a bit longer for the Feliway to disperse in
there.  If it's nice enough out tomorrow, I may open up the windows and turn
on a fan (in the window, of course), that should help.  I really miss him
coming into bed in the middle of the night & nudging me to tell me his food
dish was empty.  He's such a good kitty.

Maybe I could use them.  I was away a couple of days, and poor Stinky
licked practically all the fur off his butt. :(
