Kitty Farmcat feels great!

Christina Websell - 15 Aug 2004 16:35 GMT Dear all
A little update on Kitty FC who had a "nasty happening" almost a week ago.
She is almost completely well again. Eating like at least two cats and swearing at Boyfriend. She can go up and down the stairs, outside for toilet duties, sunbathe in the (rare here, sun) and meatloaf happily on her cushion on the back of the sofa.
I honestly thought when I found her so limp and cold that she was a gonner. In fact, my German friend mailed me today to say this (she knows and really likes Kitty)
"> Kitty's temperature was sub-normal.
that's what I'm most afraid of in cats. I have lost every single cat I took to the vet's with sub-normal temperature. I am so glad to hear Kitty has recovered!!! Poor old lady... she must have had a terrible time until you found her."
And I was indeed very lucky to find her. She didn't have the strength to come home and if she had been more than a few gardens away, I probably wouldn't have got to her in time.
Have to go now. She says "gimme more food.." and I suppose I have to. At this rate she will become obese as she is a very tiny cat. 2 kg ish. Minute, really, but yet so fierce and independent! I thought Boyfriend was a very big cat, but my cat-owning friends say he is normal size and that he just looked enormous compared to Kitty!

BTW another version of her name could be: Kitty First Class. I think she's earned it.

I had the same situation in reverse! Melisande has always been "my little girl" - and of course she WAS, when she came to me as a kitten. However, Patches was so much bigger that I never realized her fifteen pounds makes her a BIG "girl"! (It's just that he weighed nearly twenty pounds, so beside him.....)

How do you get them so big? I don't expect Kitty FC will get any heavier than her maybe 5 pounds or so. Boyfriend is a much larger cat, but he isn't heavy. I have not weighed him, but perhaps 8 lbs from the feel of him. What is the normal weight variation for a DSH moggie?

><swoon> at the thought of 15 or 20 lb cats. How do you get them so big? Find a Maine Coon. :-)

I thought this was pretty impressive until my neighbour told me how heavy his cat Boo was, an even more impressive 10kg. No maine coone in him but persian cross. Freddy's mum was black oriental type breed so even though he is pretty heavy there's not much of him. Will post seperately about his attitudes

Kitty FC is even smaller than I thought, just a bit less than 4lbs, less than 2 kg, but remember, she is *very* tiny. Boyfriend weighs 7lbs. 3 and a bit kilos, he looks a fine weight for his size, not thin, not fluffy. He looks lithe and fit. He hated going on the scales and it took ages to get all his feet on ;-)
Looking forward to hearing about your cats.

One way around this problem is to weigh yourself first, sans cat, then get back on the scale holding the cat. The difference is the cat's weight.

A year ago he could not bear me anywhere near him and would disappear immediately from his adopted bed in the conservatory if I opened the back door. He is a shy lad with a nervous and gentle temperament.
> One way around this problem is to weigh yourself first, sans cat, then > get back on the scale holding the cat. The difference is the cat's weight. Good idea. I'd like to get him confident for me to put him on the scales again, but if he is too scared I'll take up your idea, thanks. He wasn't scared though, just didn't want to put all his feet on the scales at once.

Now she weighs around 3.5 kg. Very "fluffy", but she has lost some weight lately.
Frank used to weigh around 4-4.5, and he looked fit anf fine. Now, with age and hyperthyroidism, he only wieghs around 3.5, but he still looks OK. It's just the pouch under his belly that is pretty big these days.

I thought older cats always got one? That it was normal for the elderly ones. Might be wrong, but sure I read it somewhere.

Some cats have them and some don't. Even lions often have them. Vino has been steady at 12 lbs for all of his adult life and he's got one. The rest of him isn't fat though, he's very solid and muscular. Except for the squishy pouch :-) -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! Except for the squishy pouch :-) I did some research on this once and found that breed standards used by cat shows sometimes refer to this pouch - apparently having one is required for some feline breeds. There I saw it called a "primordial belly pouch".
I kind of like some of the names for it in the Cat Terms list on Flippy's Cat Page: Cat Paddle, Cat Flap, Apron, Udder, Cat Belly Flab, Sack of Jello, The Bags, The Sacks, Pouch, Buddah, Buddah Belly, Beer Belly, Modesty Flap, Fat Sack, and Fat Pocket.

I am glad to read she's doing so well! Please give her an extra scritch for me.

badwilson - 16 Aug 2004 09:15 GMT Great news! I bet she's eating so much because her body is healing. That healing process burns a lot of calories. She should slow down as she gets completely healed. > Dear all > [quoted text clipped - 27 lines] > > Tweed Jo Firey - 17 Aug 2004 19:33 GMT Sounds very much like she took a fall that left her too hurt to get home and then got knocked down by the elements and exposure. Glad her injuries seem to have healed and that she is getting back to her old self.
A cats instinct to go to ground when its hurt can really work against them when a loving family can't find them and help.
Its about out biggest worry as ours are indoor/outdoor cats and they refuse to convert to house cat status.

Glad her injuries seem > to have healed and that she is getting back to her old self. And how! Yesterday there was the body of a young bird on my hearthrug - quite a big fledgling. It was a young collared dove not yet out of the nest, maybe 10 days old. I put it in the dustbin (garbage can.) Half an hour later Kitty came in with another one, and proceeded to eat the lot. Legs and all. Chomp chomp, gulp, gulp. No wonder she survived for so long as a feral. I guess she climbed a tree and found a nest.
> A cats instinct to go to ground when its hurt can really work against them > when a loving family can't find them and help. I was really lucky to find her, you know, as I had already looked in that place twice. It must have been the purrs and prayers that did it..
> Its about out biggest worry as ours are indoor/outdoor cats and they refuse > to convert to house cat status. If it's possible for cats to be able to go outdoors, personally, I think they should be allowed to unless you have some sort of motorway in front of your house and they are sure to get killed or you live right in the middle of a large town or city. Mine enjoy it so much in the garden, which is reasonably large (1,000 square yards, some of it wildish) Fields at the back, next four neighbours the same amount of ground. It's kitty paradise really.
There is not much traffic at all up here, but if there was I would be tempted to keep them in. I will never know what happened to Kitty, whether she got a glancing blow from a rare car, fell, or even perhaps someone kicked her - altho that's quite unlikely as this is a nice community.
I visited a friend tonight and was saying how I wished I had a digital camera so I could take pics of Kitty FC & Boyfriend and share them on the group. She has no concept of newsgroups but immediately said she would come and take some piccies. But not for a week or two as she is busy. Hey,.she took a lovely foto of her own longhair tuxedo and has it for a desktop background. So maybe she can get my two! Watch this space.
