I'm just posting this for whatever... expiation... might only get condemnation
from idiots though on a newsgroup

once upon a time, though... once upon a time, 4 years ago...

I just about always eat meals in front of the tv, two birds with one stone,
watch the news channels

but this August evening, I had my microwaved left-over spaghetti at the kitchen
table... why, I don't know except for some fate. The kitchen door was open.
Partway through, there was this plaintive wail. Any sensitive person could
innately feel the tone of it. A cat at the top stair, hesitant yet insistant,
asking.

I always had dogs, not cats. But there was a cat right there, on the porch
steps, wailing like that. I thought it was desperate, reverting to some memory
of when humans had fed it but forgetting about the humans who had abandoned it.

I had heard the maxim: feed a stray once and you end up owning it. But I
figured that I couldn't ignore this starving creature, which I sensed it was.
But still I thought I could do it just... once.

So I felt quite good about giving it the last third or so of my meal. Poor
kitty ate it all, so I went to the refrigerator and found some milk. Cat ate
that, too. So, I felt good - like some sort of mini-savior.

And you know, next morning that cat was still there. Naturally.

But I didn't want to be responsible for a cat, so I walked past it.

That night, I was going out to a bar/nightclub. The cat was there. So I gave it
('it' still) all my leftover hamburgers. When I came home, the cat was there on
the back porch. Imagine that.

I sat down to have a cigarette and look at the stars. Buit when I even looked
at the cat, the cat purred. It was lonely. When I leaned down to nuzzle the
cat, it nuzzled back but also bit the tip of my nose. I know it was because the
cat's emotions were overflowing. So I called it, "smoochie".

ah well... I type too much...

Cat was female, was pregnant, loved her

It's unfortunate that it can be so hard to find a no-kill shelter. And
that it can sometimes be so hard to find out whether a given shelter
*is* no-kill.

FWIW, Smoochie enjoyed human love and kindness from you. You were doing
your best for her. Please, don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure that
Smoochie has forgiven you. It's the folks at the shelter that she'll not
be forgiving :(

If it helps at all, there are now more people who will mourn Smoochie
and her kittens along with you, and who will understand that you gave
her care and love when she asked for it, unlike whoever 'owned' her
before. What you did, you did thinking it was the best you could do for
them at the time, and you didn't know the truth of what might happen. It
sounds like you feel you betrayed them, but I think you were betrayed as
much as them. The fact that it still haunts you four years later shows
that you sincerely believed you were doing the best for them. Maybe if
you are ever in the position to choose to own a cat in the future, you
can choose one (or more) from a kill shelter and save their lives in
memory of those that were lost.

"Might" is the key word in my mind. Does the original poster know for
sure that Smoochie and her kittens were euthanized? The kittens might
well have been adopted, actually.

It is a sad story and a sad possibility. But not a certainty. I would
avoid taking animals to the shelter in the future, but perhaps you could
hold onto the hope that at least some of them found homes.

I am so sorry. I can understand that, not being familiar with shelters, or
being knowledgeable about the intense overpopulation situation, many people
assume that shelters find good homes for all the kitties dropped off. The
shelter personnel should have told you, bluntly and honestly, that they would
likely euthanize Smoochie and her babies. I do, and insist that all personnel
advise relinquishers that either this cat will be PTS, or a weaker, less
adoptable cat will die to make room for it. With that information, some people
will reconsider, and try to keep the cat. Again, I am so sorry. When you're
financially able, maybe you can rescue another cat from euthanasia in memory of
Smoochie.

I feel your pain and guilt. I am crying for you and Smoochie and her
babies. Purrs and blessings be upon you.

You didn't know.  You did what you thought was best, and it was a more
merciful fate than what likely would have happened without you.  I'd
be willing to bet Smoochie would understand.

Can't, however much you may want me to.  You did what you thought was
best for Smoochie and her babies.  I want to curse the person who dumped
her in the first place.  Please give yourself another chance.

Pam S. sorry for you and for your pain
