Especially if you are from Victoria.
As most of you know, Dennis and I are in the process of applying for a
resident visa in order to come and live in Australia. Our plan is to move
to Margaret River, 300 km south of Perth, WA.
So, here's the issue. There is a new type of visa that we can apply for,
it's only been available since July 1st of this year. It's a regional visa,
for people who want to move to small towns, away from the large metropolitan
areas. For now, this is only available for Victoria. Our migration
consultant said that we should lodge the application for now as if we were
planning to move to a small town in Victoria, and in a few months, by the
time things get more serious, the other states will have followed and we
will just switch it over to WA.
Now here's the problem. On the application form, they want us to nominate 3
towns where we want to live, at least 50 km outside of the Melbourne
metropolitan area. We have to say why we've chosen these towns and they
want to know if we have any friends in these towns (just a name and which
town they live in). We know one guy from Dennis' work who lives 350km from
Melbourne, so we will use him for sure.
But it would be great if we could list a few more people from different
towns. So is there anyone here who lives in a smallish town in Victoria who
would allow us to put their name down on the form? Dave G lives in Horsham
and I'd love to be able to use him as a contact, but I don't know if he
reads this NG much anymore or if he even remembers me. Does anyone know his
email address? Flippy lives in Melbourne I think but I'm not sure. Anyway,
anyone who can help us out with this will be absolutely greatly appreciated.
You can contact me by email at badwilson at yahoo dot com. I just thought
I'd mention it here since y'all are such great and helpful people.

I've forwarded this post to Dave G.
You might want to look at sattelite towns of Melboune, wher eyou can still
say you don't technically live in Melbourne but its still a reasonable
commute.
The Mornington Penisula is beautiful, its tends to be where Melbournians go
for a quick weekender.
Bendigo is a big regional town too. The only thing about Victoria,
especially away fromt he coast, is that it gets very hot in summer and very
cold in winter. But your Canadian, you should be fine with that (and what I
call "very cold" is still quite pleasant for a Canadian)

I'm sure NZ is absolutely stunning and I really can't wait to visit, but it
is way too far away from Dennis' work in SE Asia. We're trying to reduce
the commute which would be 18 hours from Canada (we can't keep living in
Thailand forever). NZ would be less but not all that much less. It's only
a 6 hour flight from Perth to BKK and that's really attractive. Besides,
we've fallen in love with Margaret River, it is soooo wonderful there.
You'll have to come and visit once we're all set up :-)

The thing about the situation is, it's purely hypothetical anyway. We will
never really move to Victoria, so the towns we pick are just on paper
anyway, for the application to be able to move forward during the time it
takes for WA to get on board with this regional scheme. Not that Victoria
isn't a very lovely place to live, I'm sure. But we have fallen in love
with Perth and Margaret River and it makes much more sense for us to be
there because the commute for Dennis to work here in SE Asia will be much
shorter with hardly any time difference. Also, if he ever quits the company
where he's at and flies out of Australia, WA is where much of the oil
industry related helicopter work is happening.
But thanks for forwarding my email to Dave G, I hope to hear from him and
will also send him an email.

Hi Britta,
First, I've forwarded your post to Dave G, in case he doesn't read the ng
anymore.
Second, yes, I'm in Melbourne. I do know people from my mailing list who
live in regional Victoria. Please email me privately for info.

Hi Britta,
I grew up in country Victoria, as did my DH. Whilst we now live on
the outskirts of Sydney (so aren't of much immediate use to you), I
know a fair bit about the geography and smaller towns of Victoria and
might be able to help you pinpoint places of interest/relevance.
If I can help, please email me at tsilberb at bio dot mq.edu.au
Cheers,
Tish
