Hello,
I'm thinking seriously about getting a Roomba robot vacuum cleaner. In case
you haven't seen them before, they're like small flying saucers. It has a
sensor and turns off automatically if flipped over, and it's supposed to be
very safe around pets.
One of the main reasons I'm thinking of getting one is that I have three
cats, and my bf, who's allergic, is moving in soon. He loves the fluffies,
and he never complains, but I'm worried that it might be hard on him.
Neither of us have time to vacuum very often, so I thought Roomba might be
a nice compromise. Apparently you just push a button and it cleans the
floors in several rooms all by itself.
Does anyone have any feedback about this gadget? How well it works, how do
the cats handle it?
TIA!
Kathy

I think you'd be better off with a HEPA filtered vacuum that you work
yourself. I can't imagine one of those things doing a very thorough job.
Also, by a couple of good HEPA air filters like those by Holmes or
Honeywell. Work great.

What I need is a vacuum that can cope with MY (very long) hair as well as
the cat hair. I've killed two Orecks about 5 times each. My hair even
entangles the cat hair on the carpet and couch. It's a nightmare.

Try a Dyson vacuum cleaner they make on for pets. Mine works great.
It also has a HEPA filter

I agree with Karen -- You should also consider investing in at least one
HEPA air filter for the bedroom area -- we have cats (5) and some allergic
folks in our family and we bought a HEPA filter for every bedroom and it
helps a lot.

I have a Roomba. They do a pretty good job but really aren't all that
practical. Their dustbin is pretty small. It sweeps the kitchen floor
better than it does the rugs.

I have one, and I like it a lot -- but purely as a supplement to a full-size
vacuum with HEPA filter. The Roomba does a good job of picking up cat fur
and surface dirt (which is what I got it for) both from my carpeted areas
and the vinyl floors. As someone else said, it has a small dustbin. If you
get one, go to their web site and be sure to order the new version -- the
dustbin is larger. I turn it on and let it go to work while I am doing
other things (even watching TV), but this is definitely a vacuum for surface
debris; it would not get "deep-down dirt," and that makes me wonder how
practical it is for someone with severe allergies. Of course, I think it
does have a money-back guarantee, but you should check on that. One
advantage is that it doesn't bother the cats at all. Another positive is
that it will travel under beds and chairs to get dust that you might have
some difficulty getting with a regular vacuum. One disadvantage is that you
need to pick up papers and get cords out of the way. I also place a book or
some other object in front of any furniture that is almost the same height
as the Roomba; that way, it won't get trapped under the furniture. And, of
course, it's pricey.

True, it doesn't have a HEPA filter, but the nice thing about is that it
can run while you're out of the room or even the house, so you're not
trapped in the center of a cloud of dust and hair like when you're
vacuuming. Before we got ours, I would always get sneezy and stuffy
after I ran the sweeper. It really does make a big difference.
Here's a cute article I came across recently. I found it again in case
you want to read it.

Good luck,
