Since Hobo and Speckles are now indoor-only cats, it's amazing how the
wildlife around here has increased and multiplied! Speckles was
always the Mighty Huntress (laid-back Hobo could hardly care less) and
did her best to decimate the chipmunk population, in addition to
shrews, birds, and whatever else small enough. This spring, after we
found a half-eaten young rabbit on the front porch, we decided to keep
her in with Hobo, who resented her freedom to roam, and we tired of
dead bodies strewn here and yon. Voila!! We now have hordes of
squirrels and chipmunks, as well as rabbits that we hadn't seen
before, visiting and taking up residence. It doesn't sit too well
that the rabbits are mostly seen raiding our garden of beets and
carrots, but what the heck - they're fun to watch!!

It is fun, I agree. We don't have chipmunks but I love to watch the squirrels.
The three cats that go out are either really inept hunters or too lazy. It's
really rare for them to kill anything. I'm really glad.

Yup. Fez is such an amazing hunter (you should see him playing with his
feather wand), I'm sure we wouldn't have a single bird if he was allowed
outside.

We have a ton of bunnies, in fact had a nest right next to my house, in my
front yard and neighbors front yard. Thankfully my cats are indoors so no
worries there. However I have one dog, fat as she is that has gotten a bird
out of the air, and just recently caught herself a baby rabbit (she killed
it). My neighbor's dog is constantly after rabbits or moles - she sees a
rabbit and she's off and running, but if you yell at her she'll stop
chasing. I'm guilty of going out and leaving carrots for the bunnies.
Handful of squirrels. I really like squirrels, had about 4 at old house.
Used to talk to them, they'd chatter back at me. When I was a very small
girl there was a wild one we called Pete, you'd call his name and he'd run
up to the window and eat a cookie out of your hand.
I'd like to think I have an affinity w/animals, from wild to domestic. They
do seem to take to me. My animal magnetism at work....if only I could put
it to use to attract a rich man!!!

When I lived near White Rock Lake in Dallas I used to go jogging on
the trails around the lake every day. There was 1 squirrel that looked
for me every morning. He would run along side of me for about a quarter
mile or so. I would run to a certain spot and then turn around and run
back home the same way I came. On my return, there he'd be waiting for
me and running along side me back to where we had started. I actually
miss that squirrel on my morning runs now.

Takeoff is an option.
Landing is a must!
And in the end on wheels we will depend.

Oh, how sweet! He was your running buddy! :) At my old house I tried to
get one to come closer to me, had him about 5 feet away then my dogs were at
the door wanting out, so he took off. I thought for sure I could entice him
closer!

Awww, I'd love to have a squirrel accompany me like that!
Best wishes,

The wildlife in our new home is why we choose to keep our mob indoors
(although they are allowed outside on leash and harness). Living in
Australia, our wildlife is somewhat different to yours - we have a
wallaby that visits our lawn (and would dearly love to eat the lemon
tree!), king parrots that visit the bird feeder and are tame enough
for Mum to feed from her hand, lots of little finches, eastern
spinebills and honeyeaters, little skink-type lizards in and around
the rocks, several types of wren, several other types of
outrageously-coloured parrots and who-knows-what types of nocturnal
animals. If allowed out of doors, Spock would have a field-day and
would quickly decimate the small birds and lizards.
Mind you, we also have our fair share of bunnies, but I'm not as happy
to see them as you are since they are feral pests here!

Wow!! Your wildlife sounds so *exotic* compared to our little
critters! I'd *love* to see those colorful parrots in our trees -
they'd make our mockingbirds, blue jays, even cardinals, look pale.
Even a wallaby would be, well, "interesting" to see! Thanks for
posting.

Can you even imagine having rainbow lorikeets at your bird feeder?! I'm
astonished and thinking perhaps I should move 'down under' :)

On the flip side, I think chipmunks are the cutest little things and
would *love* to watch hummingbirds, bluejays and cardinals. I saw
hummingbirds once when I visited Canada and was blown away by how
awesome they are.
