I am a mug

I have it written on my forehead. It says "This is A Mug [TM], animals
welcomed"

When Waffles brings in an item of local wildlife, she announces it grandly,
"MMMOOOWWWZZ!" as if to say , "See what I, Waffles, the Mighty Huntress brings
for the dinner table!"

Not so Francis. When he brings in wildlife he announces it with the most
pathetic mewing, as if to say, "Oh err, what have I done? Am I in trouble? I
didn't mean it, honest."

Anyhow, this morning I hear the pathetic mewing of the reluctant hunter. I went
to investigate and Francis dult dropped a sparrow at my feet. It was looking
the worse for wear, so I popped it in the rescue box, thinking it was not going
to make it. The rescue box is an empty washing powder box with a clean sheet of
kitchen roll in the bottom of it. All expense spared, as you can see.

After an hour, I heard a lot of hopping about in the rescue box. Sparrow, it
seemed, had recovered. So I wandered outside with it and it hopped into a bush.
Fine.

This afternoon, in wanders a certain one-eyed black cat, announcing
"MMMOOOWWWZZ!" at the top of her feline lungs. Lo and behold - she'd brought in
the very same bird...

So figuring the bird needs a bit more TLC if it to have any chance of surviving
and the fact there is a nasty storm now brewing up outside, I've invested in a
bird cage...

So, Bobby Charlton (don't ask...) the sparrow is now in a proper bird cage,
complete with perches, seed, water...

Hopefully I can try to make sure it is rested, fed and watered over the next
couple of days and then let it go.

Any purrs for the survival of Bobby Charlton the sparrow will be much
appreciated.

Cheers, helen s

p.s. Any purrs to facilitate the catching of the shrew currently running around
the office floor will also be gratefully received.

Confirmed...

I now have *two* sparrows in the birdcage.... found the second in the kitchen,
being chased across the worktops, which *had* china on them, by Francis.

Francis is in disgrace.

Quite ;-)

They are fine this morning.

The weather forecast, although it's sunny this morning is further storms later
in the day - so I'll let the feathered ones (who are still alive!) rest &
recuperate a day or so before I put them back outside.

Sending purrs for the two in the cage, as well as all those others in
the big Out. Around here I never get a such to rescue any of Rocky's
catches, since he eats them as soon as he gets them. Neither of the
girls has every managed to catch a bird. Sammy is h*ll on
grasshoppers, though ;-))

Thanks.

I've managed to get a very bad pic of the two rescues

I just hope there's no additions today!

Once Bobby Charlton and David Duchovny (don't ask...) have perked up
sufficently and the weather is okay, they'll be released into the garden.

Good for you for seeing that the birdies are taken care of.

How are Waffles and Francis taking to the birdies in the cage?  Are
they trying to get a better look?  Or do they think that mommy's just
taking care of their toys?

Don't know how your sparrows are going to react to the cats, but my
dove isn't at all bothered by cats. Right now, a cat he's not even
acquainted with is less than a yard from him, and he's completely
indifferent to her. This bird *teases* Felix, given a chance.

Birds are alive this morning, but as further stormy weather is forecast today,
I'll let them recuperate longer and not put them out in a storm.

It seems to be doing fine. Both it and its cellmate have been pecking at the
seed & drinking water. As there is a fair old storm raging outside, they are
probably better off here than out there tonight.

Maybe Francis saw the birdie in the cage, and didn't want it to be lonely?

Honestly Helen, I don't know why you bother with doors on your house!
Just let all the creatures in now and be done with it once and for all!  ;)

You have a point.

I have made Bobby Charlton more at home in his/her temporary home. I was at the
pet store and saw a little whicker nest.... sparrow sized.... It is now in said
cage, lined with shredded soft tissue paper.

<snip>

Helen I would have done the same thing - sucker for a little critter aren't
you?

I had birds a long time ago as well as 3, maybe 4 cats and a few dogs (I
think 3).  They all coexisted fairly well, cat's weren't overly interested,
Elmo would occassionally stretch out on top of somebody's cage and sleep.
Well one day while dad and I are at work, with one dog locked up in a crate,
Elmo apparently decided he no longer liked the arrangement - I'm not sure.
I just know the canary cage was on the floor and no bird.  I'm shaking the
curtains, looking high and low for the bird.  Then I looked over at the
vacated dog crate - it seems the bird in it's fright, flew into what looked
to be safe - another cage.  Unbeknownst to the poor bird was the bird eating
Shih-tzu occupying the crate.  I found a few feathers and maybe a drop of
blood.  I felt awful.  I am happy to report the remamaining two birds
eventually died from natural causes, and did not become dog or cat food!

No more birds for me - could you imagine the absolute chaos with a bird and
8 cats?????

Anyway Helen, good luck with the little chirps.  Hopefully they can be left
to go on their way soon, and not be brought back!!!
dirtylitterboxofferingstospammers - 09 Jul 2004 09:17 GMT
>Helen I would have done the same thing - sucker for a little critter aren't

Guilty as charged.

>No more birds for me - could you imagine the absolute chaos with a bird and
>8 cats?????

Yes :-) Hence at the moment, the cats and the bird are kept completly separate
- I'm not allowing the cats in the same room. As soon as BC is well enough,
he/she will be given freedom again.

Helen, I love this story.   I am as big a softie as you are.
I once rescued a baby sparrow from a nest that had been blown down in a
storm.  It had one feather on its head.  I know, I know, it was madness
but I reared it (very hard as they are quite fragile as babies).  It
became a pet and when I let it go would fly down on my head from the
trees.  One day it flew down from my head to have a dirt bath nearby and
my cat grabbed it and swallowed it in one gulp.   I still feel sick
about it - moral of the story, never make a pet of a wild thing, its
fear is its best defence.  This doesn't apply to  you,of course, as you
are on a rescue mission :)

I understand your queasiness!

Bobby Charlton isn't intended as a pet. Once Bobby has recovered, rested and
grown strong, Bobby will be released. Plus, BC is definitely wild - he/she has
all feathers and is a distinct fledgling. It did have a small amount of avian
blood spilt - by Francis - so it's going to have its chance to recover.

Guess one of the biggest worries when trying to rehab any wild animal
is to get it healthy enough to release while at the same time keeping
your distance.

Birds okay - the adult completly fine this morning, so it's been allowed to fly
off outside. BC is still recuperating - seeming to eat and drink okay, so I'll
give it a while to build its strength & then it can fly off too.
