I haven't seen Milo for 24 hours, he was playing with Baggy in the
garden, then he vanished. Instead of celebrating his first birthday I'm
sitting here worried sick. I've made flyers and spoken to most of the
neighbours, will go round again this evening. I've got a feeling I'll
never see him again, please purr that I'm wrong.

What an awful time for you. Deepest empathies.

Megapurrs for Milo's safe return, even from Pericles, the Puss who
doesn't Purr, except he started last night (aged 5.5) when he was
mellowing out in an armchair after a good walk & feed and I scritched
him circularly on top of his head instead of stroking, and thus broke
down his resistance. I so hope it's a good omen.

Oh no!  No No NO don't you give up on Milo.  You've done everything right.
Persia pulled a disappearing act on me a month after she claimed me.  I was
frantic but she came back.  That was over 3 years ago :)

Many purrs from me and my crew  for Milo's safe return, Adrian.  I urge you
not to give up on finding him,  or give in to your worst fears  quite yet,
although I definitely sympathize with your anxiety. Pan disappeared for a
full day after I moved into my current apartment, and I was FRANTIC. I'll
never forget the relief of hearing his voice outside my front door, calling
me to let him in late that night.

Another thing you might do is to walk around your yard/property and keep
calling Milo, maybe armed with his favorite treats.  He could have gone
exploring, and become frightened or disoriented and unable to find his way
back. Your familiar voice calling his name could be an important guide for
him. Also... well, check any local animal control/pounds nearby to see if he
was picked up. In which case, he'll be REALLY glad to see you.  Cats have
found their owners again, after longer absences than 24 hours.  Friends of
mine who recently moved had their cat come back after her having been gone
for a MONTH. She was in rough shape, but she did come home alive, and is
making a good recovery.

Courage, and let us know when Milo's safe at home, again.

And my vet says the BEST time to call for a missing cat is at dusk and dawn.
Also, go out after dark with a flashlight because they are so good at hiding
if they get afraid, the light can bounce off their eyes and lead you to
them. Check any ground level window wells. Missing cats are rarely more than
three houses away.

Agreed, Karen!  It was dusk when Persia made her reappearance after being
missing for 24 hours.  I'd broken down and cried on the patio swing after
walking around and calling for her until my voice was gone.  I remember
clearly, heaving a huge sigh, wiping my eyes and going inside, thinking
,"I'll never see her again and my heart is broken".  Not two minutes later I
heard "MEOW?" at my back door.  The rest is history.  I had her microchipped
the next week.

Same goes for me, Mojo disappeared for about seven weeks last year and
showed up one evening at dusk, boy was he glad to be home.

Excellent advice from Melissa. I concur. I would just add that the two times
not to miss calling around for him are dawn and dusk, that's when most cats
are awake and alert. In the daytime sometimes I can walk right up on mine
and yell at them, and they don't wake up. They also seem to have active
periods in the early afternoon and again in the wee hours, but if you can't
be out there all day or night, try the dawn/dusk strategy.

We find too that if our cats are upset they will go to ground during
daylight hours and not even try to come home during the day.  They show up
just after sunset if not too far off.  Much later if they are really shaken.

Also, do not walk away from your home calling your cat.  You want it closer,
not further away.  Go as far as you plan to walk and call as you head home.

A bright spotlight also helps to find a cat that is hiding in the weeds.
Those eyes will give them away every time.

AND feeding time!

All the cats I've ever had knew when feeding time was - to the MINUTE!

Sally, for instance, was fed right after Star Trek Voyager at 6:45.  It
didn't matter what she was doing through the day, basking in the sun,
hunting in the woods, sleeping upstairs, finding some shade under a
tree, you know, all those myriad things a cat has to do in a day...

..one minute either side of 6:45 and she was home demanding to be fed.

[And yes, she's generally off by an hour when the clocks change but it
only takes her a week or so to adjust]

So there's a *very* good chance that your missing moggy will be feeling
hungry and casting around for its usual feeding dish at the usual times.

Even though the Star Trek has long since finished, so there are not even
any clues such as the closing music, Sally still sits in the middle of
the kitchen floor, or more usually, walks ahead of me leading me towards
her dish regardless of where I _thought_ I was going; at 6:45.

Oh no!  Purrs that he finds his way home.  I think there's a good
chance that he'll come back.  24 hours may be unusual for him, but
it's still short by being-lost standards, and we've had many cats on
RPCA get lost and come back after considerably longer periods than
that.
Yoj - 07 Jul 2004 22:53 GMT
Purrs for Milo's quick and safe return.  Have you checked with the local
shelter to see if he's been picked up?  That does happen occasionally.

Pyewacket (rb) disappeared for several days once.  My daughter went
around the block, knocking on every door.  Toward the other end of the
block, she finally found a woman at home.  The woman had been keeping
Pyewacket shut up in her garage.  He was thin by nature, and she thought
he was sick, so was 'taking care of him'.

Have any of your neighbors gone on holiday wthin the past day or so?  He
might have gotten himself shut in a garage or something.  One place I
lived (where there were several rental cottages), my Mischief
disappeared.  When I went looking around the property, calling him, I
saw him looking out of the window of the vacant cottage across the court
from mine.  Evidently the caretaker had been showing it to prospective
tenants, and no one noticed a curious cat "viewing" it, too!

We'll be purring up a storm!

Don't forget to check some of the web pages on lost cats. I used to have
a nice list of them, but the only one I can find right now is
http://felidaeworld.com/lost.html. It's VERY important to remember that
an indoor cat that gets out, or a family cat that somehow gets lost,
will act very differently than they normally do. Their "survival mode"
behavior can contribute greatly to the difficulty of getting them back.

Don't give up hope!

A woman has just knocked at my door to tell me she saw Milo dead on the
side of the road Tuesday evening, the day he disappeared. I'm sitting
here in a state of shock, I've never lost a cat so young and Baggy has
lost his brother and playmate.

It was one year ago today that my Rosie went to the bridge.

I already sent purrs, but reading this makes me think that the only
thing worse than hearing the news would be not knowing. Thanks going
out to the lady who took the time to break the bad news.

I'm terribly sorry, Adrian.  I was really hoping Milo would find his way
home safely. =o( Poor thing, it was much too soon for him.  Cars and cats
are really a bad combination for the cat.  Keep Baggy  and Snoopy safe at
all costs!

Hugs, and sympathetic purrs to you and your remaining family. At least your
house IS still a home, and you are not deprived of all your family at once.

OH NO......... Nothing I can say to comfort you. I hope it was quick. It's
happened to several of my cats, too. Which is why I refuse to live anywhere
near a road anymore. It's just too painful when this happens.

Oh, no! That's so awful. I'm crying just reading this.

We'll light a candle tonight to guide Milo, and we'll keep you in our

I have been too busy to keep up, and I was hoping to see today that Milo
had returned by now. :-(

Two cats in a year would be more than I could bear losing! My deepest
sympathies for this terrible loss.

I hope Milo passed quickly and painlessly to the Bridge. Major purrs for
your grief, and Milo, too.

What terrible news! I do hope Milo hasn't gotten too far away, or has been taken
in by a kindly stranger, who will see your flyers very soon!

Special purrs on the way!
