Dumped Cats, Again

Sherry - 05 Jul 2004 17:24 GMT I am so angry and frustrated. I went outside this a.m. and heard a funny sound, looked around, and there are TWO kittens in the flowerbed. They are both gray. One is longhaired. They look to be in good shape, except for fleas, ticks and stickers, and are *very* well socialized. Remember the closest house to me is 1/2 mile and I already know they didn't come from there. Somebody deliberately brought them up the drive and dumped them, probably last night. I can't keep them. I can't really even take them to the shelter and expect them to be adopted any time soon. They have 90 cats already and are about to cull and take some to the city pound for euthanasia. They're so cute. It's so sad.

JoJo - 05 Jul 2004 18:23 GMT Sherry,
Isn't there a no kill shelter in your area? I guess we're lucky - Animal Friends has ALWAYS been no-kill. The city then decided to try to go no-kill by year 2005 w/remaining two shelters (Humane Society and Animal Rescue League) - unfortunately I don't think it's going to happen. So far I think only HS has gone no-kill.
I could not give up an animal to a kill shelter - not anymore. I found a stray dog once, went around knocking on doors, nobody knew where it came from - I called AF but there's a 6 month waiting list, I couldn't keep her that long. My dog's weren't thrilled w/her and she was an escape artist - I saw her climb my fenced in yard. So I took her to ARL - I cried my eyes out, they thought I was giving up my own dog. But I knew what would happen if nobody wanted her. They would keep her as long as they didn't need the room. They said I could call down there, but the only thing they would ever tell me is if she was still there or not. I only called twice, she was still there - I cried every time I got off the phone. I didn't have the heart to call back again it was too upsetting.
I'm too much of a softy. I wish I could offer you a solution. Can you place ads in local paper, with small adoption fee? (I don't like "free to good homes" - sometimes end up w/irresponsible owners, I figure if they are willing to pay fee they're more responsible (you can always donate "fee" to local shelter if you want).
Best of luck, I hope you can find them homes.

[quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > Sherry Sherry - 05 Jul 2004 20:17 GMT >Sherry, > >Isn't there a no kill shelter in your area? No, just us and the municipal pound. We don't even have facilities to euthanize, but we would take the ill or injured or feral cats to the municipal pound for euthanization. We never had healthy adoptables killed before this year. There are too many. There is a finite amount of space and foster space, and we've reached it. I can call in a marker and get these kittens space, that's no problem and insist they don't euthanize them. That's no problem either. But the problem is *I know* that in order for *them* to be able to stay, two more are probably going to die. It's just so depressing. First I'm going to make a last-ditch effort and try to persuade my MIL. She only has two cats. Then I'm going to make a poster with picture and hang up in the post office. We don't have house-to-house mail delivery so everybody in town goes to the post office every day. Really really loud purrs needed.

Around here, we're way behind the larger cities in shelters and vet care. For shelters there is a local Sheltering Tree no kill shelter, but last I heard they weren't accepting any more cats because they didn't have enough folks to foster. That was last year, so maybe things have changed. According to a recent local TV news story, the Lawton city shelter PTS around 4,000 animals a year. It's a fairly common occurance for people to dump animals in the county - we're semi rural around here and a 30 minute drive from just about anywhere in town brings you to a country dirt road. IIRC, Sherry's closest neighbor is half a mile away, so is in prime dumping grounds for unwanted pets.
As for 24/7 vet care, there just any such thing. Another recent TV news story had to do with a puppy who had been bitten or stung by something during the weekend (according to the story they suspected a spider bite). The owner called every vet in the phone book and finally one called back after a couple hours. By the time the vet called back the puppy was over the worst of the allergic reaction, so the owner opted not to pay the extra couple hundred dollars to be seen on the weekend.
4 or 5 years ago one of my neighbors went through the same type of thing when her cat was mauled by a couple d*gs. Again, the vet she finally reached required a couple hundred dollars, up front, before even seeing the cat. The neighbor ended up putting the up front money on her mother's credit card to have the cat seen on a Saturday night. In her case, the up front money was eventually discounted when the total bill ran over a thousand dollars.

I know they were dumped. I also know whoever dumped them drove up our lane to the house to do so. We're too far off the road for such tiny kittens to get here by themselves. Hard to believe someone would dump them, especially since you said in the earlier post that they were well socialized.
I always wonder how long these people expect the animals, especially the kittens and puppies, they dump to survive. Course sometimes they just don't care, but at least this time they brought them up to the house instead of just throwing them out a window - which sometimes happens.
In my mind I see Mom or Dad getting tired of hooligan kittens starting to climb out of the basket and doing what all kittens do. Mom or Dad hauls off and dumps the kittens, while little Bobby, Suzi, or whatever, frantically search for the kittens. Course my imagination could be all wrong, but that's the scenario that's stuck in my head.

They tell children that they won't understand love until they're older when those children are giving the purest unconditional love to their parents and their pets. Even kittens understand what it is to be in love.

JoJo - 07 Jul 2004 02:25 GMT OMG - I'm in love! They are adorable - purrs coming your way for them to get good home without any others in need of one losing their life. Just irks me how damn irresponsible people can be - if you can't afford to get the animal fixed then DON'T get one!
This article just ran in local paper - our shelters our full of kittens http://www.pittsburghpostgazette.com/pg/04179/338180.stm AF had 172 in foster - I have 2 of those 170. Since the article and news broadcast 20 were adopted in one day. I was down there this weekend - more cages where cages weren't before trying to accomodate the amount of kittens coming in. While I was there somebody dropped off a very prego cat - she probably gave birth by now - she's more than likely got ringworm, plus has what appears to be chemical burns on her neck, and slightly anemic. She was under a year old, probably first litter. Litter and mom can't go into foster care due to ringworm (if you have no other animals and foster a ringworm animal you are then on an 18 month quaranteen after animal leaves). So here come's mom and babies, and they were scrambling to make room for her. It is just so damn sad.

Steve, I hate to tell you, but you're waaaay ahead of us here where I live. There is no shelter here *at all* whether no-kill or not; the city's animal control will come and kill an animal at your request and dispose of the body. That's it.
And as much as I like him, we have *one* vet who splits his time between this little town and another nearby little town, and we didn't even have him until a few years ago. The closest 24 hour clinic is 2 hours away in another state.
Count your blessings. ;-)

Unfortunately a litter of 6 and a single calico kitten came in the same day. One step forward and two steps back. I am real sorry to sound so jaded and depressing, but it's about to get to me.

One time last year I went to the cat hospital (a vets office that specializes in only cats) to get some food for "The Boys" and there in one of the holding cages was a beautiful Siamese cat about 3 or 4 years old just sitting there with that forlorn and scared look, I call it the "shelter look" on her face. While I was waiting for the assistant to get my purchases I asked about the cat. The receptionist said that the cat was on the front doorstep in a carrier when she got to work in the morning. No note, nothing. I felt so sorry for the cat. I wanted to take her home, but with three of my own I just could not do it. So Sherry, I know how you feel. It is sad. I just wish people would take some more responsibilities for their actions. I know that when I got Figaro that I was making a long term commitment to him and to myself for his well being and care even if he does not sit on my lap anymore. I wish you the best with the little ones and that you can find them a home together.

My DH is off work Fri. evening, Saturday and Sunday this >week, and the following weekend too. Let me know. Wow!! You ladies are my heroes. The furthest we ever drove to pick up a cat was about 150 miles. My Russian Blue, Smokey, kept getting fostered out further and further from us. Well it wasn't really fostering, people thought they wanted a cat, and then changed their minds and handed the cat off to someone else. We were supposed to get him when he was only a few miles from here, but we just never caught up with him.
I'll always remember the first time I saw him. He's a tall and well-muscled cat with a fourteen inch tail. He was being held by a four-year-old child and I thought that he would never stop overflowing that little girl's arms. At least we finally got him. I've never seen a better looking cat, and we used to go to quite a few cat shows so I've seen a lot of fine looking cats. We could have showed him in the open class (he was de-clawed and neutered when we got him) but we didn't want to stress him. We knew we had gotten a winner and that's all that mattered.
Regards and Purrs, O J
