Remember I posted about a robin that flies into the utility room and helps
itself to the dry catfood from Waffles's bowl? Have a look at

http://uk.f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/wafflycat/detail?.dir=/c59d&.dnm=697a.jpg

The bird shows very little fear of me. If I'm in the utility room loading up
the washing machine with laundry, it hops about *just* on the outside, watching
me and offering me various avian vocalisations which I think mean something
along the lines of "Hurry up and get out of there, I want to eat!" Then as soon
as my back is turned it flies in and helps itself.

Cheers, helen s

Indeed :-)

My house is attractive to the local wildlife - Francis has just brought in a
live vole a few minutes ago. It is now running about the kitchen and I am quite
out of breath trying to catch it and release it before Francis re-catches it
and does not release it, so to speak...

Laku reminds me so much of Pearl! Especially that one called "Hard work".

He's displayed several similar poses lately now that it's warm. He
doesn't seem to be bothered to move about too much. Sometimes he just
flops down after a few paces and looks totally exhausted.

Nope, I think that title definitely goes to Marble with his "hi-power
headlight-eyes"!! Maybe Laku is a close second, or third...

And that second one is a perfect example of the recent discussion of
"giving the ear".

He does "give the ear" on various occasions and in various meanings.
Sometimes when he's watching something more interesting outside (=
birdies) and just turns the ears to kinda acknowledge like "yea, yea, I
heard you, but not now, OK?". Another one is when he's "not going to
deign *that* with a response". Or like in the carpet pic where he "holds
back" DH's "help", like a hoomin would hold up his hand to stop someone
else from interfering, etc.

Do you have a thing for naming things after bats?  You did once
nickname a dog "Batdog". :)

You know, I may do, as I do like bats and when the bats flies around the garden
at dusk, I often pop out to watch them!

What a funny bird -- great photo!  Thanks for the laugh.  (Maybe you should
have a mini-bowl for the robin!)

Cheeky little thing and what a great photo!

When I sit out on my patio, I have Carolina Chicadees fly up and practically
*dare* me to disturb them when they are eating from my suet feeder.

Great story!  You should also post this to rec.birds.

Helen,

I already suggested that you post a similar message to rec.birds.  Here's
another suggestion:  Are you familiar with "Birds & Blooms" magazine?  Your
photo is excellent, and I think you could get your photo and a short
accompanying story published there.

Oh, I love Birds & Blooms! I agree, it's a perfect picture for that magazine.
Thanks for posting it Helen.

Can't call it a birdbrain.

How interesting!  I had no idea that British robins were different from
those in the U.S.!  Ours in Minnesota (unless my memory is ver faulty)
have no red around the beak, and the entire breast and underside is red
(no white at all.)  Of course, IIRC, bluejays in the American midwest
are crested (as are cardinals) but California bluejays are not.

Yup - different species. See

Well that explains something.  I've so often heard the term "Robin
Redbreast" and wondered as all the Robins I've ever seen had breast feathers
that were at best a dull orange.
