jmcquown - 03 Jul 2004 15:27 GMT ...does anyone want these 28 cans of Fancy Feast that Persia can no longer eat? They are 3oz. (85g) cans, assorted. Chicken hearts & liver in gravy, beef in gravy, savory salmont, cod, sole & shrimp, whitefish & tuna. Just pay for the shipping and you can take them off my hands. I don't want Persia's favourite Saturday treats sitting around tempting me to give her some :)
Isn't it odd I don't know any other cat lovers who live nearby? And the shelters will not take anything but dry food (and the expensive stuff, at that!). I do not want to throw this food away.
My email addy is not munged so if you're interested contact me, I'll weigh up the box and calculate the shipping based on your area. You can then let me know if you're willing to pay the shipping cost (obviously no obligation there). I can't see the cost being exhorbitant since the cans are small; it's certainly much less than the cost of buying 28 cans of this stuff!
Thanks if you can help.

I do not want to throw this food away. Well, that's really sad that your shelter is refusing Fancy Feast. Even if they don't feed it as a regular meal, FF is wonderful for a cat who is feeling bad and won't eat. It's a rare cat who turns down Fancy Feast. Also, Humane Societies always know who the pet owners are that are struggling financially. It could be donated to someone. Sherry

They turned down a bag of Meow Mix and a box of Purina Cat Chow when I switched Persia over to Iam's about 6 months after she adopted me. Its FREE, fer cryin' out loud!
Thanks, Sherry, I think I'll contact my vet and see if he knows anyone who can use this food. The Humane Society is way out in bum**** Egypt and I don't want to waste the car fuel (what with the prices) if I can help it :)
But the offer is still good as long as it lasts if anyone wants to inquire about FF for their lovebugs.

Its FREE, fer cryin' out loud! Wow. They must be doing real well if they can afford to feed premium foods. I don't blame them--it's better for the cats and there's a *lot* less stinky litterboxes. The Purina feed mill calls us sometimes to come get food that's not packaged right, or some other reason they can't sell it. Sometimes as much as a thousand pounds. Anyhoo, they tell us that the shelters in the city will only take their Pro Plan. Sherry
Christine Burel - 03 Jul 2004 17:41 GMT Can you ask the shelters if they have contacts with any feral rescuers? The feral rescue folk here in Albuquerque are glad to get any donations. Christine

Its FREE, fer cryin' out loud! Unfortunately cats are more prone to get crystals on foods like Meow Mix or Purina which maybe why the cats shelters you contacted have declined the food. The rescue group I work with just spent 1,000.00 on vet bills because two foster homes were feeding low grade food so it's not necessarily that they are rich it's a matter of trying to be careful of vet bills.

But I suspect another reason is that cheap food makes for very stinky and messy litterboxes. It's really amazing, the difference in clean-up when the cats are fed premium as opposed to grocery brands. Their bodies process so much more of the food, less waste. Friskies is the worst, IMO. Phewww.

We have something called Pet Coalition does this. Maybe your community does too.

We have something called Pet > Coalition does this. Maybe your community does too. I contacted the vet. They said they could take and give it out IF someone happened to ask for assistance with feeding a cat, but only under those circumstances. They recommended I contact the House of Mews (I've donated $$ to them before, back when I had a job). So I've done that; waiting to hear if they want this free food.
The vet told me the government run orgs have to adhere to specific types of donations (lord only knows why).

> The vet told me the government run orgs have to adhere to > specific types of donations (lord only knows why). I think they should take it even as a gesture. If they don't care to use it, no one needs to know. You, as the donor, can believe that you gave food that is needed, and charity could let you think that. I think they are acting shitty. Even if the charity doesn't care to use it, they should find another place that will. I'm with Sherry, though, FF is kitty candy that will help a sick cat start eating again.

I don't want >Persia's favourite Saturday treats sitting around tempting me to give her >some :) The best place to meet cat people is in the cat food isle of a large supermarket. I would look for an elderly person on the grounds that they often have little money but tend to pamper their pets. Another type would be the person buying multiple twenty-pound bags of the house brand: they probably have a lot of cats and would like to be able to give them a treat (28 small cans would be about three treats for my bunch - if they get canned food, it's the cheapest brand ... come to think of it, they haven't had a treat in weeks, and I have a couple of cans of 25 cent stuff ... Snowball and Dandy seem to be out, but the other nine were on that can of chicken flavor in a flash).

I would be rather afraid to approach a stranger in a supermarket and say "Hi, I have some food to give to you." I don't know about you, but I'd be *extremely* suspect of anyone who approached me in this manner, and might even yell for security!

OTOH, you could drive around till you see a cat on the corner with a sign that says "Will Catch Mice For Food". If Yoda hears you've got free Fancy Feast, it might be him.

Luckily, I a kind person asked me to ship this food for furbabies so I did this afternoon.
Thanks for all the input/advice/purrs, everyone :)

No store receipt and certainly no receipt from the delivery box any more. It's okay, I have a couple of solutions now :)

The cans have been bagged by and shipped to someone kind enough to want to trap a feral furmom without spending a ton of money on salmon, etc. Hopefully this will help :)

Glad the food is being put to good use!
