Hi all,

Just had to share this tidbit. While I was printing a document just now,
Cesca came over to watch.  The expression on her face as she saw the sheets
feed out of the printer was priceless--she was mesmerized!  If she could
have talked, I'm sure she'd have said "Wow! will you look at THAT? Wow! It's
incredible!"  The only other times she looks that intense is when we're
playing with her favorite fishing pole type toy. I had a friend over for a
kitten viewing yesterday morning, and Cesca dragged the toy over to me by
its leather tassle. Then she sat and stared at it, waiting for it to start
playing with her, again. There are moments when I think this cat is
amazingly smart, and other moments when I wonder if she's quite right in the
head. =o)

Sweetie goes after the printer part as it shoots back and forth. She can be
sound asleep downstairs and across the house, but if the printer starts,
she's right there on top of it.

;-)  But you got off easy.  Dusty, a previous cat, came home with a
mouse, very much alive, which he placed at my feet and then looked up
and "mrrrp"ed at me.  He just sat there and watched as it headed for
cover under the furniture.  Something he'd never done before.  With a
sigh I set to, lifting up various items of furniture to find the darn
mouse, and all the while Dusty was beside me, looking on and "chrrrping"
encouragingly.  Even when I pointed at the mouse and I *knew* he could
see it he wouldn't take a step towards it, just "chrrrped" at me even
louder.  In the end I gave up and caught the mouse and gave it back to
him whereupon he promptly put it down at my feet and "mrrrp"ed at me
once more.  So yes, we went through the whole routine again.  I'll
*swear* that he was teaching me how to catch mice!

That's exactly what it sounds like!! You were in need of education.  Honest
though, that is how they do it for there babies in the wild. Don't you feel
honored. You are an honorary son.

Yep ;-D though perhaps more a wayward child - he really seemed to get
exasperated at my amateurish attempts to catch the mouse, making no
allowance, I might add, for how much furniture I had to shift!

And yes, I know that's how they do it in the wild; provide one mouse
with a limp and then encourage the untutored in Catness 101.

SNIP

LOL!! I'll bet he was thinking.  "Okay, he didn't get the concept at ALL the
first time. Let's try this again.... Honestly, he can SEE the mouse, why
doesn't he at least TRY to pounce??  Does he expect me to do EVERYTHING????"

Isadora once brought a live rat into the apartment and was busy playing with
it in the kitchen while I tried to sleep in, one morning.  I went out to
investigate and shouted "ISADORA!!" in such a horrified tone that she
grabbed the rat and bolted outside.  She never tried THAT one again,
although she did bring down a few birds in her hunting career.  I know cats
are natural predators, but I discouraged this practice as much as was in my
power.

Hah! You got off easy.  Have I said that before?  ;-)

Sally, my cat, is very much a little miss hunter and has recently taken
to bringing her mice home, live and unharmed as usual, but instead of
losing the things under the furniture she now loses them IN my bed.
While I am IN it!  Dammit.  Getting woken up at some ungodly hour in the
night by a cat raking your back trying to hook out a mouse that has
taken shelter there is not the best joke I know.  The BEST joke I know
is waking up to find that that wet squishy thing I'm lying on is a half
eaten corpse...

Luckily it's now her butterfly season, frog season being over thank
goodness, and Sally catching butterflies is one of the most amazing
things you can see.  There's a grassy bank opposite my house and Sally
will lurk in the long grass waiting to ambush a passing butterfly...

..she leaps into the air and catches the butterfly between her paws and
WHILE STILL IN MID AIR will transfer the butterfly to her mouth and then
land, as all good cats do, on all fours.  She'll rush around the side of
the house, burst through the cat flap and gently lay her prize on the
kitchen floor.

Whereupon it promptly flies away!!

Later in autumn is the moth season, same thing as with the butterflies
but usually in the dusk and even dark, well dark except for some minimal
street lighting, and the moths get the same chance to make a bid for
freedom but rarely make it because she eats them.  Loves them.  Is often
in and out for hours, catching a moth about once every twenty minutes.
An amazing critter she is ;-)

Sammy's favorite started out like that third one from the left. I say
started out because the string has been replaced at least once, and
the toy on the replaced several times with the cheap little fur mice.
It's the one she always drags to me, even though she has a couple
other very much like it. She just won't let the old one go. The only
other toy, if you can call it that, that she brings me when she wants
to play are bottle caps.

I wish Betty would do that bring me toys!  I always have to initiate
the play.  Another toy I got since I took that picture that has turned
out to be very popular was labeled a "cat charmer".  It's a long,
elastic, multicolored felt strip attached to the end of a stick.  One
of our games involves me whipping it at Betty, and Betty rearing up
and catching it between her paws.

Those are great pics of Betty--you really captured the "mighty hunter"
expression on her face.  I also like Betty's little white toe gloves.  =o)
With the help of a friend, I hope to get some pictures of Cesca at play.
She's very light on her feet, and with all the energy of youth, play
sessions last quite a while, around here.  Unfortunately, my cheap crap
camera does not always snap the picture when you push the button.  I need a
new camera!  (Unfortunately, the bills also need to be paid.......) The
present camera still takes pictures, but you have to keep pushing the
button, and sometimes miss the picture you were trying to take because the
cat moves.

Imagine Cesca's kitten at play!  She's not at that stage yet, but when
she is, she'll probably want to play even more than her mother. :)

Oh my gosh! I'd never seen a picture of Betty. She is beautiful. She looks like
Bootsie's twin! Except Bootsie *definitely* isn't polite. She's a little hussy
when things don't go her way. I don't have any good, close pics of her
uploaded, but you can tell what she looks like from these.

We always thought my Mimi-- a tiny tuxedo, with a very expressive
little face-- looked just like the cat who always gets striped in the

So does any plumber, repair person or computer tech who walks into my

I'm surprised you noticed the black dot on Betty's chin.  It's
actually a fairly striking feature if she has her head lifted up, but
in most of the pics, it's not very evident.

Those pics are great! I can see she's a daddy's girl. The pic in the
window is too funny. I've tried to do that but when everyone is in
the window and I go outside, at least one will follow me to the door.
Then Bonnie will get spooked by "someone" looking at her from outside

She follows him around like a dog. I have noticed something that's either
coicindental or amazing, I'm not sure which. But Bootsie starts sitting in the
window at 6:30 p.m. She sits there till he gets home at 7:15. I honestly think
she is watching for him.

These are so cute! I have to admit that having a cat underfoot while
I was doing something potentially dangerous might get on my nerves, but
she does look adorable sitting just under the eaves (is that the right
word?), no doubt making sure the paint is applied just so.

The 3 cats in the window is hilarious! They have all that window space,
but the 3 of them have to cram into one small space together.
