Persia's Trying her New Rx Food

I got a call a couple of days ago indicating the special food the veterinary
surgeon ordered for Persia was in.  I was ill myself yesterday so I didn't
get to pick it up until today.

This is Hill's Prescription formula x/d (antioxident formula) in cans "with
chicken" (gee, I'm sure she thanks you for that).  She meowed her fool head
off when I took out one of the cans.  I only gave her about half of it.  I
set it down and she turned to look at me as if to say, "This is IT?"  Don't
you *dare*, little girl!  It cost me $27.50 USD for the case (24 cans) and I
don't have a job, remember?!  She sniffed and started eating it.  She did
okay with that little bit.  But I have the sneaking suspicion she's going to
turn her nose up pretty soon.

Anyone know of any comparable non-Rx diets (or even the same thing, with a
prescription from the vet) I could order online for less?  I haven't
searched yet (I'm about to) but if she goes through a 5.5 oz. can of this a
day that's going to get quite expensive.  I still have bills to pay, a small
parrot to feed and gee, *I* like to eat, too! :)

Hmmm. What is the "point" supposed to be for her from this diet? Never heard
of x/d. How is it going to help her?

Karen,

The surgeon said the test results showed her bladder cyst was caused by a
'diverticulum' - which is sort of like a human getting divertiulosis (small
pouch trapping food particles in the lower intestines which requires a
change in diet) or diverticulitis (more serious form of the intestinal
condition often resulting in surgery).

From a web site I found this about this particular food:

"Calcium Oxalate Related Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) FLUTD is
often caused by the formation of crystals in the urinary tract that can
result in numerous and even painful symptoms for your cat. There are two
common types of crystals that form in a cat's urinary tract: oxalate and
struvite. Prescription Diet? Feline [sic] x/d was designed for the
nutritional management of cats with oxalate-related FLUTD. Oxalate crystals
are usually formed in response to urine that is burdened by excess amounts
of calcium and oxalate, often in an acid urine ph."

Persia's body formed a cyst around this to try to heal itself, rather like
an oyster layering mother of pearl over a grain of sand.  But when the
bladder was empty it rubbed the wall of the bladder, which the vet likened
to the inside soft tissue of our mouths.  This caused infections and stones
to form.

Frankly, she appeared to be doing fine on the regular UTI dry food she has
been eating since her first UTI last .  By that I mean, since the surgery on
6/21; that is not a terribly long time and she is still having me shove
pills down her throat every night.  I just don't want to take a chance of a
cyst and stones reccurring.  Poor thing must have been miserable and I
didn't know it until I discovered blood in her urine again right before my
taking her to be boarded this last trip.

I'm still searching.  At this one site it's $5 less and doesn't appear to
require a "real" prescription.  I'll see if I can find other foods now that
I have more of a written description of the condition.

I can tell you this - she must have been getting the calcium and oxalate
from the food she was eating.  She doesn't drink milk and I don't give her
table scraps.  And honestly, I have no idea what oxalate is; I can only
imagine it is some sort of additive that didn't agree with her.

Wish me luck and purr for Persia.  She's doing very well, by the way :)

Got it.  Well, I don't think there are any ones not prescription for
calicium oxylate control, but I bet the vet could try other brands. I bet
Eukanuba has one, and maybe IVD does. I hope you can find one she likes.

I'm not convinced she doesn't/won't like it.  I'm just going on my gut
feelings given the look she gave me before she started eating.  You know,
*that* look ;)

I'm finding this Hill formula (why do my fingers keep wanting to type Jill
formula?! LOL) in dry online without a prescription for as little as $12 a
bag (4 lbs.) and the canned for $23.76 per case.

She's used to only eating canned Fancy Feast food on Saturdays  The vet said
no more for her! (Reminds me of the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld.)

*****Great, I've got 28 cans of assorted Fancy Feast.  If anyone wants to
pay for shipping I'll gladly send them.  It's an assortment of the sliced
beef and turkey in gravy and then the usual fish combos and salmon.  Email
me with particulars if interested :)*****

I'd donate these to a shelter but you'd be surprised how freakin' picky they
are around here.  They request only things like Iam's and Hill's - geez,
it's free food, come on!

Since the vet did tell me to blend some of this new stuff in gradually with
what she's been eating, I'll be using up the Hill's UTI formula mixed in
with this over the next few days.

Persia is sitting in my lap right now, purring away :)

I"m not a vet, but if the problem was diverticulosis which caused the stone,
then I can't see how any diet would help. One would have to address the
cause of the diverticulosis, and AFAIK, its just one of those things that
just happen. But if it was the crystals that caused the diverticulosis, then
a diet to control the crystals would make sense.

It was not exactly diverticulosis since it was in the bladder; he likened it
to that.  The whole mess was caused by calicium oxylate.

That makes more sense. Not only is it hard to post with a crying baby on my
lap, it makes it more difficult to read, too :-)
