Magic Mood Jeep? - 01 Jul 2004 16:40 GMT After DH left for work this am (6:30ish) I tried to get a few more Zzzz's in. Woke about 20 minutes later to Lizzies growling yeowls at the front window. There she sits, on the kitty window perch, on her haunches & slapping the glass with her front paws, HARD. I figure that it's one of those strays that wander through every once in a while. She sits down, still growling, and I see this grey/brown tiger cat, actually hanging from the screen. Lizzie yeowls more (not only is her tail puffed so that it looks like a raccoon tail, so is the hair along her spine & some on her flanks), even louder than before - sending Weeble running from the room with his tail all puffed, and the FF running into the room to see what the fuss is about. I jump up (actually fully awake, considering what I'd heard) out of bed to scare that @#$!@# stray away before the kittens get to Lizzie & she lashes out at them (they're still learning that Lizzie will play & chase them, but NOT to bother her when she's in a 'mood'). I go to thump on the window and Lizzie lashes out at ME! Stray jumps of screen and runs around corner of house & I see it's tail in the side bedroom window - Lizzie jumps from perch to bed (about 5 +/- feet) then to the other window (only 2 +/- feet), and still growling, perches on the sill. I run & get band aids for my wounds, which are the short deep kind that bleed profusely - 5 of them: 2 on the inside of my right arm, half way between wrist & elbow, one on right finger of right hand, one on middle finger of right hand & one on index finger of right hand. I look like a mummy (a modern one at that). I'm not sure how she got them all spread out like that - I was more intent on getting rid of @#$!@# cat to notice how she did it, only that she did it.
I return to the bedroom to find Lizzie running from window to window, looking for the intruder. Fortunately, it is gone and I can actually watch the fur smooth out on her tail. The whole incident took less than a minute (except for the band aid part, I think that took about an hour - the way I was bleeding I just could NOT get them on fast enough!). My middle finger is the only one that's sore as she took a chunk of skin off it, right near the middle of the finger-pad (I wonder if my finger-print will be messed up? My thumb print is from where I cut my thumb to the bone with an exacto knife when I was 16).
When ever I see Weeble's Mama (she STILL won't go into the trap, not after what happened last fall), Lizzie does nothing except watch - not a peep out of her. But this tiger.... she does NOT like. I'm thinking this critter is probably a male & she feels threatened? This tiger may be Weeble's & FF's daddy. DH is going to set the trap tonight in front yard & see if we can catch him (Mama hangs out in back yard, or across the street).
Wish us luck in trapping it!

Magic Mood Jeep? - 01 Jul 2004 18:50 GMT My ouches are fine. Lizzie ALWAYS gets upset when she sees just that one stray, never any other. As much as I dislike taking animals to the local humane society shelter (they are a kill shelter, and the only one around here.), this one is definitely going there as he causes too much stress in our furbabies. Any others will be TNR's.
Lizzie has since clamed down, and is napping on the short tower in front of the window at the end of my desk.

I never did trap (although I threatened to) the across the street down the way neighbors cat who was making Persia so upset. I haven't seen that cat around in months; I suspect it got the worst of the deal being let run on a fairly busy stree :(

Magic Mood Jeep? - 02 Jul 2004 20:27 GMT We live on a fairly busy street as well, being a major thoroughfare & not a residential street. I wish we could TNR Weeble's & FF's Mama, but she just walks past the trap (baited with can of kitten food - getting sardines today to try & get at least ONE cat). It's fairly quiet right now, but come 3:30ish (when a lot of local factories let out), traffic really picks up, and it stays fairly busy until about 8 or 9pm. The AM rush hour is pretty bad too. Speed limit is 30-35 (with a school zone of 20 during certain times of the day), but about 19 years ago I myself got a speeding ticket for doing 55 - and the cop got me right as I topped the rise in front of the house where I now live (talk about irony)!
There have been numerous critters squished near us, mostly squirrels making a break for it (or falling from limbs/powerlines over the roadway), but occasionally a raccoon, one time a groundhog (carcass was right next to our mailbox, ick) and one time a skunk across the street from our only next-door neighbor - stunk up the place for over 6 months (took the winter snows & road salt to wash that smell away)... sure hope it got the perp's car a good one as well ;), but I have not yet seen a cat.
But that road is the reason I keep all my feline critters indoors (d*g has access to outdoor fenced in area). One morning this past spring (before FF came into our lives), I had the windows in the bedroom open (these are new windows, installed last year by myself & DH, and they have full screens that are only held in by four spring-loaded pins), and Weeble decided he wanted on the window perch w/ Lizzie (I was opening the blinds further since the sun was no longer warming the room), and he accidentally snagged the shear curtains that are only held up by tension rods - and they promptly fell on Lizzie. That startled her out of her daze, and she jumped AWAY from the object that just struck her - towards the screen. Screen popped out, and so did Lizzie, who landed in the front yard with the screen resting on top of her! She was so startled by that, she just crouched there on the ground, and I just had visions of her coming to her senses and darting away in fear, right into that road! I did the only thing I could think of at the time: dive half-way out the window myself, grabbed a handful of fur half way down her back (the nape of her neck was just out of my reach) just to keep her from darting away, squirmed myself further out the window so I could wrap my arms around her, then somehow drug myself backwards through the window back into the bedroom. By the time I was almost completely back into the room, Lizzie decided she'd had enough of the whole mess, and made a break for it, fortunately over my shoulder and into the room, landing on the bed with hackles raised & tail puffed up. Weeble was on the floor with a stunned "wha happened?" look on his face, Tennessee was eyeing the now screenless window. I literally had to chase all three from the bedroom & lock them out until screen was replaced. That must have been some sight, if anybody was watching, and I sure hope they video'd it and sent it to Funniest Home Videos if they did. I'd sure like a copy of it!
Remembering that makes me glad that the windows were NOT open yesterday morning when tiger paid us a visit & was hanging from that very same screen that popped out. This time it held, but the what ifs scare me.
What is a slave to do?

Good luck trapping the tiger kitty. Too bad mama is too smart for the trap. Rocky was that way, too, and had to be tamed before I could wrap a towel around him and haul him in for neutering.
LB gets that same way sometimes when she sees certain cats, wide eyed and crazy, and during those times she swats anyone, including me, who comes near. Most of the rest of the time she gives way for Rocky or Sammy. But not when she's on the recliner or bed - she'll swat at them if they try to intrude there, though she doesn't try to move them if they get there first.

She's been known to get swelled up for the 'Coon, but the BT really does it to her. She was smacking the glass so hard one day, I thought she was going to break it. She also makes this caterwauling noise at him. Smokey just runs and hides when she gets like this.
Unfortunately we don't think BT is a stray, although I saw several of his offspring running around. Still waiting to hear back from the rescue on these guys.

Aw, poor you! That's a lot of wounds, and Weeble leaves scratches on *her* when they play!?
Betty's only scratched me deep enough to bleed once, the first time I carried her to show her the birds and squirrels outside the screen window. She jumped out of my arms in excitement, and scratched me as she pushed off, but nothing really needing bandages, or even a bandaid. Anyway, I always clipped her claws after that, and the best she can do now, it seems, is leave welts. She's usually quite velvet pawed, and I encourage that. If she grabs me a little too roughly with her claws, I say, "Owwww!" and she immediately understands.
Magic Mood Jeep? - 02 Jul 2004 01:50 GMT Lizzie & Weeble don't play like that anymore, only when he was about the FF's age, and she seemed to know that he was just a kitten & wasn't that rough with him - but he was plenty rough! Same thing with Weeble & FF now - he doesn't get too rough with them, but they attack him every chance they get.
And the scratches weren't actually scratches - she did the hook & grab action when she struck at me (so fast that I didn't even see her do it, but she must have used both front paws), so they are just places where I am missing tiny chunks of flesh - less than 1/8th of an inch each, but like paper cuts, they bled like a stuck pig. I think it's time to start trimming her claws again - they've become little daggers!

He'd let them beat the crap out of him.

Sometimes when he gets the crazies, he does something I call a "drive-by." He'll be running around the room in a frenzy, and he'll very quickly sort of bounce off me with claws extended and change direction. It's much too fast for me to stop. It's sort of like a swimmer pushing off a wall, except he does it in midair. I've gotten some interesting scratches that way.

Sally is like that, velvet pawed mostly - even when we're having quite a vigorous play fight. Sometimes though she gets that devil-cat look; you know? Her ears go pointy and her eyes seem to slant...
..then she hooks in with everything she's got. The trick is not just to say "Ouch" which she will recognise and respect and so let go, it is to NOT automatically pull my hand away from the pain, because that helps produce the scratches if she's still hooked in, but to hold still while she lets go.
No more play fighting that day either!

The landlord called out an exterminator who put out traps, and Rocky wouldn't go on the same side of the building where he saw a trap.
