Thank you everyone for all the chigger bite information.   Thankfully, it
all comes back to the fingernail polish  which will do away with the itch
and then be washed away with showers or cold running stream baths!!

and the cats who want no part of camping!

Do I want to know what chiggers are?

Yowie (whatever they are, we don't have them here. Only deadly snakes,
spiders, fish, jellyfish, crocs...)

It's a kind of mite. Some sources I've seen say they're most common in
the southern US, but I can tell you from experience that they're in
the midwestern US in large numbers too! <g>

This is a link kids health site aimed at kids, but it also provides a
very understandable explanation about chiggers, what they do, how to
deal with their bites, and how to avoid them.

(it's 3 short pages, so don't forget to click the Next Page links ^_^)

Probably not.  I've never even had contact with one and I itch just from
reading about them.

Actually, Yowie, I don't think any of us have ever seen one either. They're too
small to see w/out a magnifying glass :-)

When people here started to talk about chiggers, I did a Google image search
and EEUCH!! I wish I hadn't. They're like ticks only even more disgusting.

I didn't know what chiggers were either, but someone (was it Steve?)
posted an excellent link on anything you'd possibly want to know about
the little buggers:

I don't think we have chiggers in Finland, but reading about them made
me itch all over...

Thank *you* for the reminder. My mom used to put fingernail polish on us. I
wish Id  remembered that after the recent chigger attack....It was miserable
for a week.

Yes a critter that I would not mind seeing on the endangered species
list.

I've got a great chigger bite story to make y'all itch!

It was July of 1993 and I was in central Oklahoma, on the way to visit
Arkansas from Arizona. I had been in Arizona - where there are no chiggers -
for almost 5 years and had forgotten that chigger exist.

I slept in the back of my van in a big empty field. It was extremely hot, so
I slept naked. In the morning I got up, groggy, and stumbled out to empty my
bladder, squatting in the tall grass, then fell back into bed for a while.

By the next night, I was scratching every inch of my body constantly. I must
have had at least a thousand bites. This went on for a full week and
completely ruined my trip. I simply could not sleep. Finally, in desperation
I lathered myself with Caladryl lotion - which didn't help one bit!

It occurs to me that instead of sending criminals to prison, they should be
rolled in grassy meadows in Oklahoma once a week for however long they are
sentenced.

Let me guess. You're *not* aspiring to employment with the Oklahoma Tourism
Council. LOL. Or Arkansas either!

Right. Let them give me a job with the Correctional system!
