Right you are, Karen. For those who aren't on the Yahoo catslave group, a couple days ago Crackle's meowmie posted that he might need expensive treatment (she's unfortunately among those looking for a job). Anyway, TED said Crackles needs to be sedated for a closer look at whatever is in the ear, and estimates the cost at $100 to $200 IIRC. There's a chance that they'll be able to correct the problem then, if it's something simple, but there's also a chance of more expensive surgery in the future. Anyway, I'll take the liberty of posting a copy of Crackle's meowmie's post from this afternoon *************** "Dr. Karen's Animal Hospital 1940 Kings Hwy. Unit #3 Port Charlotte, Fl. 33980 #941-766-8555
I think she is 0pen 8:30am-5pm eastern time monday thur friday but the office closes from noon to 2pm for lunch and animal feeding. also open 9am-12pm on saturdays
I'll give her a call to tell her to expect a contact from someone I know that wants help out. Thanks so much, can I say thanks so much again? meow for now gotta go make that call before she closes" *************** And in a later post she said she had talked with a vet tech named Robyn, who would leave a message at the front desk for anyone who might call wanted to contribute to a fund for Crackle's bill
For those who might be new, or just not remember, Crackles was rescued from a neglectful neighbor about a year ago. When rescued he was going bald from a terrible skin condition (mites if IIRC) and other health problems from the neglect. Well, recently he develped an abcess, which responded to treatment, but also has some ear problem which hasn't responded to medication. So it's back to now it's back to TED where they'll taked a closer look under sedation.

After such a bad week, with so many kitties, d*gs, horses and people crossing over, it's nice to be able to do something more than provide candles, purrs, and good thoughts.
I called to contribute a few minutes ago. Robyn wasn't in, but Tina, the lady who answered the phone, knew exactly what I was talking about when I said I wanted to contribute toward Crackles' bill.
Tina wouldn't tell me how much had been contributed, of course, but she said that there had been "several" donations already.
Purrs to Crackles and Crackles' meowmie!

Not necessarily the ordinary ear mites, but after the Chigger thread got me itching so much, I went to do some reading. Ick.

P. Cox - 02 Jul 2004 21:14 GMT Thanks for all the well wishes, I haven't gotten the mac able to read newsgroups yet so I am back on my mothers webtv to reach you guys after steve told me there is a thread about crackles on here.
I called the vet to see how close we are to being able to get him looked cause his ear is starting to produce pus again. She said we are up to $80(this doesn't include anything mailed cause of course the mail hasn't reached her yet). She said to come get more antibiotics to clear up the infecion again(poor crackles has been on one or another antibiotics for a month now). The office is closed on monday for the holiday, I forgot to ask if they were open on saturday. So anybody calls this weekend or monday they might not be open. I need to go pick up the antibiotics as soon as I get done typing this, I'll find out about saturday and tell ya'll. I want to thank everyone for helping crackles out, he is such a trooper. I have pictures in a yahoo album, I'll post the link in my next post when I get back from the vets later today. I just can't express enough thanks for helping crackles. Big hugs to everyone.

At least in human medicine, if one or more antibiotics were not cleaning up a drained abscess after a month or so, it really may be worth getting a culture and sensitivity test. Could be cheaper, and certainly more pleasant for the two- and four-legged ones, to find out definitively what antibiotic(s) hit the particular infection.
Again extrapolating from human medicine, it would be reasonable to start with an antibiotic of the cephalosporin (e.g., cephalexin (Keflex)) class, and, if that doesn't work, consider a fluoroquinolone (e.g., ciprofloxacin (Cipro)). Even in human medicine, though, local doctors know what are the most common infections and antibiotics useful against that strain in your area. Even a Gram stain, which can be done in the office, may be informative.
While I don't immediately know of any human antibiotics that are toxic in cats, that's a vet's call. Penicillin, for example, would never have gotten to market if it was first tested on guinea pigs -- this generally quite nontoxic antibiotic kills them quickly.
P. Cox - 02 Jul 2004 23:14 GMT Yes they are open Saturday but can't sceduale anything til after tuesday because they are closed monday. Just before I got there someone called from Australia. The assistant looked amazed, I told her Crackles is world reknown(hehe).
To answer the medical post cocerned about his treatment:
I think the problem with clearing up the infection is getting to what is causing it which is this thing in his ear. Its a yellowish mass that has gotten bigger since I first noticed it(noticed it when I was cleaning a scratch below his ear, when shook his head he sprayed blood all over my shirt. He has been given tresaderm first(before he had an examination), then moved to synotic drops and baytril then he had his cheek lanced(twice) and given clavamox tablets along with the drops and baytril when his cheek filled with pus. The infection seemed to have gone away but has reurned now that he is no longer on any antibiotics for the past 5 days. He has no mites or yeast infection but has tons of bacteria in his ear, they did a ear swab and checked it out under the microscope. The thing in his ear is connected not something that got stuck in there and thats all they know.
peace and thanks

Its a shame you didn't get to the office a little sooner, we could have said hello personally!

My Shadow had very recurring problems with his ears, and he'd scratch and scratch at them, had polyps that had to be removed a couple of times. He had gunk that would ooze out and I was constantly wiping his ears out. No mites, no infection unless he scratched at them too much, and he'd had drops I had to put in often. I keep saying this, and I think people are skeptic because it is probably unusual, but on a suggestion I started giving him B complex daily and his ears cleared up. I haven't had to have him to the vet for cleaning, infections, anything (ear-related) in a year now. Good luck and God Bless RPCA for helping you and Crackles. Angels, I swear.

That generally matches what would be done in humans. Baytril is a fluoroquinolone used in veterinary medicine only. Clavamox is a combination that has a comparable coverage to a cephalosporin.
Tresaderm is for skin-deep things only, as are synotic drops. Both are anti-inflammatory and tresaderm also has an antibiotic.
If they still are getting bacteria in the ear, a culture and sensitivity really makes sense. They've tried the obvious classes of antibiotics, and it's time to pin down what will hit the particular bacteria. Getting a culture and sensitivity, and then using an antibiotic known to work, both will make him comfortable faster as well as save money on antibiotics that don't work. It's not out of the question to use more than one antibiotic concurrently, if, as it well might be, it's multidrug resistant staphylococci.
Ooky stuff, but the color of the discharge may or may not mean anything -- it really takes experience even to take a good guess.

As I understand it, Crackle's meowmie used to post to the group here via webTV, and hasn't figured out which software to use now that she's switched to a Mac. I imagine she'll be making an appearance here before too long, though, as she just asked for help in Yahoo. She's already had one response, and I'm sure the Mac users will soon guide her through getting back to newsgroups.
I don't read Yahoo daily like I do this group, but will pass along any updates when I read them unless I see someone has already posted them.
