jmcquown - 30 Jun 2004 22:38 GMT I was driving to the store and thought I heard a cat meowing. What the heck?! When I got to the store I even popped the hood to make sure there wasn't a cat in there.
I just *now*, hours later, realized, my cell phone has a cat meowing as the ringtone when certain people call me. (I have different rings assigned to different people.) The thing sounds so realistic I thought there was a cat someplace in my car. Never occurred to me to open my purse and answer the danged phone. ROFL
I had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century to get a cell phone. Maybe I'd better change that ring - it scared me and didn't say to me "someone is trying to call you". Of course, you should have seen my face when the vet called me at the hotel in Minneapolis on 6/18 - the phone neighed and John said "What the heck is that?!"
Side note: Persia is doing great. Anyone got any idea how long it will take for her fur to grow back? She looks so funny when she does the belly-up thing. She's a short hair but had quite a bit of fur as a "modesty flap".

You'll seem *some* growth between now and then, but it won't be until the next full coat change cycle that it'll be indistinguishable from the rest of her fur, in all likelihood.

You would think that they feel better after being brushed and getting all that extra fur off of them. Plus the kitty treats that they get while I brush them (It is the only way I can get them to stay still for the brushing).

Persia adores being brushed. She scrambles up in my lap at the mere hint of my opening the brush drawer and if I say "Wanna get brushed?" she's right there in my lap purring and rubbing her face and neck on the brush.
She's such a sweet gal :)

Cali is like Jill's cat, Persia. Just mention the brush and she's right there waiting. She's got a bad case of "Elevator Butt" and loves getting the base of her tail brushed. She's also fond of getting her chin whiskers brushed. Smokey does not care about brushing, although she has much shorter hair than Cali, also a DSH.

I was wondering the same thing-- I guess Cesca's going to be Miss Bare-Belly for the next few months, then. <G> One consolation is that it should be a little cooler for her when it gets hot around here.
Pan is an all black cat except for a little white dab on his chest. Lately, I've noticed he's grown a few white hairs on both his knees that he never used to have. Of course, it may all be because of age. He is sixteen now, after all. I just think it looks kind of cute. He loves to be brushed so much that he keeps trying to rub his cheeks against the little rubber brush I use on him, and he purrs mightily. Cesca is a COMPLETE elevator butt when I scratch her right at the base of her tail. =o) At first when I'd brush her, she'd get a completely bewildered look on her face as if to say "What are you DOING, back there?" Now she relaxes enough to enjoy it. Both cats are shedding enough to make a new woolly mammoth between them.

LOL That's Bonnie, too. She loves being pet, and scritched but if you run your hand down her body toward her tail, she turns her head to your hand like she's going to bite, and she has a few times. Not hard, but enough to tell me she doesn't like it. I can't get her used to regular combing because she just wants her head combed. But now she has a cough that is frightening regular and I thought it could be from the shots a few weeks ago, but the vet said no, so I am trying to get some hairball schtuff into her. She no like it. lol

It may just be a personality quirk, but it could also mean that this area is sore and thus she doesn't like being touched there. When Bonnie lies down, does she seem to try to avoid having anything press against this area?

I've been petting her down closer to her tail on her back more to get her used to it so I can comb her thoroughly and she's getting used to it, but its just funny how she looks to see what I'm doing, sort of. She's getting better so I don't think she's hurting, but I will be keeping an eye out to see if it improves and that she's not in pain.

That's really interesting. I wondered if it were coincidence that pointed cats had that pattern. I knew only that there were some rabbits and other animals that had temperature activated enzymes that governed fur color in order to turn white in winter, and a darker color in summer.
Maybe that means that Siamese cats can get tan lines if they repeatedly lie in the sun. If they are heat pigs that lie on radiators or heat registers during the winter, they might end with stripes.

Ming's coat was BEAUTIFUL for all of about 6 weeks... On Monday morning I noticed an egg-sized bump on his side (right behind his shoulder). It was soft, and moved around, so it wasn't attached to some deeper structure. It didn't seem to bother him, even when I poked at it. I got him into the vet, and it turns out that he had a HUGE abscess. The vet said that she got a half cup of gunk out of it. He has a heart murmur, so the vet didn't want to use general anesthesia, so she did it with a local. He's running around with a wick sticking out of a shaved spot on his side. He won't wear the Elizabethan collar the vet gave him, but he's also not chewing or scratching at it- he's basically ignoring it entirely. Once it starts to grow in, he's going to have another dark spot on his side... maybe I'll take pictures as it grows in to document the process...
BTW- I've only had him for about 2 and a half months. He's about a year old, an absolutely sweet kitty, but the shelter was concerned about him- a heart murmur and a serious case of ringworm (all over his face, in his ears and nose and several quarter-sized spots on his neck and body) limited his chances of adoption. I have a serious soft spot for color point kitties, and Ming has the white feet of a Birman. Something about white socks on a Siamese is just too cute. I took him home recognizing that he was going to be labor intensive for a while, but he responded to the ringworm treatment very well and settled right in. He's an absolute love of a kitty.

As I mentioned, I have a soft spot for color point kitties. The new kitten has since been named Princess Buttercup... she was about 4-5 weeks old when we got her from a feral litter near where my son's girlfriend works. One day about a week after we got her, she was walking around the house, meowing in that imperous tone "human! feed me!", "human! pet me!" " human! pick me up!" I found myself replying "as you wish..."

They've taken to chasing each other all over the house, and then falling into an exhausted stupor. The shelter people thought Ming was between 2 and 3 years old, when they had him neutered the vet thought between 1 and 2 years. After having him in the house for the last couple of months and seeing how he behaves, I'm inclined to think he's maybe a year- tops. He's still growing- he's gotten significantly longer and taller in the last 2 months. He's one of those "solid" cats that surprise you with how heavy they are when you pick them up.

I've never seen a siamese with socks before. Aren't they gorgeous? we think so... that was what drew my attention at the shelter- I'd never seen socks on a Siamese, but do a Google on "Birman cat" and you'll turn up a whole breed. I don't think Ming is a Birman, he's a shorthair, but the breed is truely beautiful. I think he's just a mixed breed with an odd combination of tuxedo and siamese markings (he also has a white bib that's kind of hard to see on his cream colored chest). Since he's a darkish sealpoint, those white socks show up when he's sneaking down the hall to pounce on the kitten. He's got the sweetest personality- He's very affectionate, and will practically do headstands if you scritch the base of his tail. He'll put the top of his head down between his front paws to get his butt up. There have been a few times when his butt is so high and his head so low that he ends up doing a summersault when he loses his balance. That puts him in the perfect position for a tummy rub.

He loves rubbing around his head, and will sometimes accept belly rubs, but anything from about half way down his back to his tail is a no-no. Not that he gets agressive, he just whips around and dticks his little furry head against you hand. He likes his back to be brushed, though, as well and being rubbed with a washclothe when he's wet - he's my crazy cat who will sit out in the middle of the yard in a light rain.

My old cat Scamper liked to sit in the rain, in the shower or in the sprinklers. When she was young she also liked playing in puddles. I had one cat long ago who wouldn't tolerate any touching of her tail, but every other cat I've had liked tail rubs. Scamp (she of the water cult) liked having her tail tugged. I'd grab the last 2-3 inches and pull her tail straight up enough that her back feet would "bounce" on the floor. She'd crouch down and purr....

I have had my share of boils over the years, and releasing the pressure gets rid of much of the pain, although the body still has to heal the infection.

Maybe I'd better change that ring - it scared me and didn't say [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > belly-up thing. She's a short hair but had quite a bit of fur as a "modesty > flap". Smokey's fur took about four months to grow back after her spay. I guess this would be about the first "moulting". The only problem is that this patch of fur grew back longer than the rest. Makes her look like she has a saggy belly.

As for the phone, I prefer a phone to sound like a phone. As for the twentieth century bit, I never did learn any of the functions but calling, receiving a call, and checking the battery level, on my old analog phone. Now I am using my son's hi-tech digital. I know even less about it. It is all I can do to make a call and only if I have to.

Now I'm thinking maybe it's LUCKY that my cell phone's ring is a boring old Brandenburg Concerto. =o) Umm... does the vet KNOW your phone whinnies when he calls you? Thanks for a great laugh,

The horse whinny is reserved for people who aren't in my regular "address book". I never use it for outgoing local calls and only a few people even have my cell number. But I really must change that ring; at least I wouldn't have thought there was a *horse* somewhere in my car! :)

Signature Adrian (Owned by Snoopy, Milo & Bagheera) A house is not a home, without a cat.

Yes, it was my long lost love, John, calling from his drive to the art show outside of Cleveland. Persia doesn't seem to mind being bare bellied; in fact, it might even be more comfy for her since it's so hot outside. She lets me give her scritches like she has fur and everything!
I've changed the ring tone. Cannot deal with thinking there is a cat in my car :)
