I decided to kill some time yesterday and use up some fabric remnants I had
around. So I made "purr pads" for the cats at the shelter...a fabric square
with a cotton backing, fleece top and quilted with batting in between, big
enough for a cat to lie on.. Before I sew it up, I lace the batting with
catnip.
It sounded like a good plan. BUT, has anybody every tried to sew with catnip,
with FOUR cats in the house???!!!!!
It did *not* go well!

I finished eight. But the last one sure has some crooked seams. I couldn't see
for the cat heads and was trying not to sew right over the little paws that
were in the way. I'm trying again when they go for their morning outside time.

I am sure the cats don't mind crooked seams. That is one of the good things
with cats. They are not a bit judgmental about those things that people
are - like house cleaning, window washing, grass mowing etc.

Well, some cats aren't, but my Mikey would frequently try to bury
anything out of place. A few times, eating in front of the tv, I set
my plate down on the floor beside my chair to go answer the phone or
whatever; when I came back, my plate was not raided, but buried by
napkins he'd scratched over it. :-)

Awww. That's cute. He was just being "tidy." Mikey was a grand cat.

Even just minor-repair sewing, such as buttons or torn seams, is
complicated enough with a cat in the house, from my experience. They
either decide that it is a good time to be a lap-cat, try to play
with the needle and thread, or both at the same time.

LOL!! I can imagine.

I've tried - once, and catnip was not involved. They were fascinated with
the needle, thread, fabric - if it moved they were fascinated. I had
fosters walking through the machine. Finally I gave up (I think I broke
sewing machine - that would be #3 in 10 years, no wonder I don't sew). Now
what I do is make "tie" blankets - take a couple pieces of fleece, same
size, cut about 4 inch square corners off, then cut about 4 inches deep into
fabric to create strips - then you tie the strips together. Towards the end
I stuff w/fiberfill and catnip, then have to hurry and tie, and get into
hiding before nosey creatures come around.

Never mind catnip... Just the THREAD part of sewing is hard enough in my
house!
