Got a call from a guy (George) I worked with roughly 7 years ago. He'd sent
me email yesterday asking for my input about another former co-worker who
had applied for a job he has open.  He couldn't help but laugh over my
description of this guy always wandering around trying to find free food.
There's one in every company, isn't there?  The cheapskate who manages to
sniff out the box of doughnuts, pizza or pot luck in another department.
Never chips in for food or gifts but always manages to sign the card.  And
that's about all he/she does well. :)

So George wanted to know if I'm interested in interviewing.  Said he wants
me to read over the specs and sleep on it.  It's 50% programming, 50% end
user support.  He knows I didn't do formal coding but says he knows I can do
it if I want to.  I helped him design the parameter screens when we were
moving to the GUI version of our former employer's proprietary software.
The thing he's concerned about (he says) is whether or not I'd be happy
doing it and not too stressed out.  I said, "George, I'm 44 years old, I
don't have much time left to be stressed out."  He literally howled. :)  The
thing I'm concerned about is, yes, I've done some programming but it's not
what I did full time so he'd have to be patient with me.  George is not
strong on patience.  At least I already know this about him.

I dunno, I'll read this over and see what I think.  At this point I don't
think I can be too choosey and I know he and I can work together; we did so
for a number of years in the past.  In fact, he's a cat lover so he can't be
all bad :)

Here's the job description:

Position: Programmer/Analyst

Job Duties:

1.) End User Support For ERP System
A.) Evaluate support calls and take appropriate action.
B.) Report any programming changes needed if any to supervision to have
a project created. Supervision will prioritize all projects.
C.) Aid and/or assist and/or train end users with program parameters to
ensure desired output is obtained.

2.) Programming
A.) Complete projects as assigned by supervision in a timely manner.
B.) Projects are, but not limited to maintenance and enhancements of
existing programs. Some minor development may be required at times.

3.) Daily Functions
A.) Perform all daily routine checks as assigned. Checks and routines
are, but not limited to checking logs and/or verification of system
automation program completion.

4.) Assist Supervision
A.) Learn and assist supervision with EDI.
B.) Learn and assist supervision with progress database administration.
C.) Assist supervision with network administrator duties when that
employee is not available.
D.) Assist all areas of supervision duties when supervision is not
available.

Greetings...

Good heavens!!  Do they want you to do janitorial work in your copious
amounts of spare time too???  As a programmer, I will never understand
why they want someone to do both programming and phone support.  These
two tasks appear to me to require totally different personalities:  your
techie person and your people person.  Not that it's not possible to
find a person good at both, it's just not the norm.

Best of luck interviewing for the job.  Having been amongst the
unemployed last year, I can feel your pain.

Agreed, but you know, the job market being what it is, I think everyone is
trying to cram as much into one job as possible.  And no, I won't mop the
floor in the women's room.  Crap, that reminds me, I need to mop the floor
in the kitchen. ;)

I think I'm more the techie type than the people type.  But I'm adaptable
and I can do both!  I'm glad he's concerned about my stress level.  I'm not
willing to have a heart attack and high blood pressure just to have a job.
Although it *would* help to have a paid benefit plan if that's in the future
for me.  Heheh.

It looks like there's a lot of learning built into the job spec, which
obviously is good if you don't know the language you'd be coding in.

Mega-Purrs if you decide to go for it! :)

I know the language; It's Progress RDBMS.  I'd been writing small programs
for Support to use on my last job for years.  I just never sat down and
became a serious coder, if you know what I mean.

Just got a phone call from a head hunter.  I have no idea how he found me
but he said he has placed people with IBM's AIX and Progress experience with
my former company.  Sent me his contact info and asked for my resume.  Isn't
it funny how suddenly contacts are crawling out of the woodwork?  Maybe
this, combined with my long-lost love, and Persia being such a sweet kitty,
things are looking up!

Like my dear, departed MIL used to say, "When it rains, it pours."  ( I
think she got if off a salt box, but it seems to always work that way.)
I hope good things continue to pour on you.

Question:  Do you enjoy challenges?

I'll be meeting with this guy tomorrow at 1:30.  I'm not sure if I'm asking
for purrs, luck or whatever.  I don't want to take just anything while
looking for something I'd really like.  And I sure don't want to put George
in a position of hiring me knowing I won't stick around for a long haul.

At any rate, it will be good to see him again.  He's a cat lover, that's one
thing on his side :)

Well then, Oz and Tiger will be sending purrs for the outcome to be
whatever you want. It'll be up to you to decide what that is.   ;-)

I bet you can do it, Jill.  Purrs and best of luck to you that you get
this, or something good, soon.
