Unusual Tail Swishing

Sabastian has a trait I've never run across in a cat.  He loves to be
petted when lying on his side on the bed or sofa, etc.; he lies there
purring away and making "air biscuits".  But at the same time his tail
is swishing, which I find really odd.  With every other cat that I've
had, this type of tail activity was associated pretty much only with
agitation and was often one of the things that let you know that you
needed to keep away.  I haven't seen Sabastian really agitated many
times, but as much as I remember he also does the tail swishing thing
then. Anyway,  I was curious if anyone else had a cat that swished its
tail when it was happy.

I've heard that Siamese swish their tails when they are happy. Frank's tail
is never still, except if he is very deep asleep. His tail just always keeps
going.

Yeah, I think this is true. Pearl's tail is almost never still and she
definitely has Siamese in her and Mom's Petrus who is very Siamese like also
has a never ceasing tail, especially when petting.

Shadow's tail is also always moving. Even if it is just the very tip
of it, even when he is sleeping. Vets and techs have commented on
that, so it mustn't be usual. My others don't do this.

I think that a lot of cats do it when they're stimulated, and petting
certainly counts.  Many cats love to be petted, and come asking for
it, but they eventually get overstimulated, when they start bopping
you, or bite.  Watch to see if he's getting "crazy eyes," too.

Oh yes, it's been quite common in mine - in fact, the two I have right now
do it a lot when being snuggled. It's not precisely swishing - it's more
"waving" - Chaos loops hers all over the place in curlicues while getting
her head scratched.

Felix frequently does that. He'll be power-purring his little heart
out, and there's the tail in motion. :-)

Shmogg doesn't (he doens't have any trace of Siamese) but I"ve known other
cats that do. The "happy" swishing is different to the "annoyed" swishing,
you just have to learn to read tail language :-)

Wasn't there a post last year or the year before about tail language?
Anyone still have the link?  Alas, it was on my former work laptop, which,
obviously, my former employer has now given to someone else. (laughing)

Very interesting. It looks like Shamrock is angry a lot, and Shadow
is often irritated or annoyed (the tip of his tail is always in
motion). What are they trying to tell me???  ;)

I wonder if the tail language is different for different breeds. Also,
have to wonder if the cats run into any language barriers. It works
pretty well for my crew, though.

Don't know about language bariers between breeds (my moggies and my niece's
Russian Blues seemed to understand each other perfectly last summer), but
tail talk is certainly different between cats and d*gs. Every time a d*g
tries to make friends with Frank and the d*g comes up waving its tail, Frank
gets upset and swishes his tail in answer. Talk about language barrier!

More Food, Meowmie! ;o) As I mentioned before, Frank's tail is always in
motion, even when he's obviously very happy, so I wouldn't trust that page
completely.

It could be he is getting over-stimulated.

Well Vino only has a nub, but it's always moving anyway.  I think he just
likes to wiggle his butt ;-)
