The Nashville Zoo had a baby camel on display in the petting zoo.
They took it off display a few months ago; I don't know if this is
because it started getting less sweet-tempered, because they sold it
to another zoo, or what. At any rate, during the several months it
was on display it seemed friendly enough, probably because it thought
of humans as "people who feed and pet me" as opposed to "people who
pile heavy loads on my back". It was a bit smelly, but so are the
goats, who are the main pettable animals in the petting zoo.

Only billys are smelly, and they don't care much if you pet them. The
gals, though, are frantically sociable. ;)

Oh, yes. The nannies are wonderful little pets, (as far as livestock goes)
except they are a pain in the butt sometimes. "Frantically sociable" is a good
description.

As a matter of fact, yes-- I've also ridden on a (relatively) friendly
one. ;)

Oh, quite awhile ago. In the Bronx Zoo. There were two of them, a
friendly boy, and a cantakerous girl. I was on the friendly boy.
They are VERY tall.

Which reminds me of the camel rides at the spynx in Egypt. After
bargaining for a while, the unwary tourist pays for the ride... not
knowing that when it's time to come back they have to bargain again
for the ride back.

ROFL! I guess you have somewhat less bargaining power on that second ride.

Yep, the return trip costs twice as much. We flew over to take part in
a multi-national exercise (I'm retired Army) in '88. One of my techs
had just enough Egyptian money to pay to the first leg of the trip.
Ended up having to promise to pay four times to get back where she
could borrow some. BTW, the female soldiers seemed to be targeted for
this particular scam.
