We don't know why yet. We just found him laying in the pasture. He was not
acting sick in the least, and his body did not appear to have been injured
in any way. He was already stiff and cold when we found him, and he had a
small amount of white foam in one nostril. Gloria will be taking him to
Columbia for an autopsy. See his pic at

They say he died due to anemia..... An excess of zinc is suspected as the
cause. We have no idea how he may have gotten too much zinc though. There
will be some test results next week and the vet will be coming out to check
the other horses. All their gums look a bit pale.....
We are very afraid here!
Jo Firey - 26 Jun 2004 02:36 GMT
I'm likely way off base here, but zinc is used to galvanize. What sort of
containers are the animals eating and drinking from? Could some of them be
defective? Could damaged galvanized pipe cause a problem?
Horses have more delicate health than many realize and the young are even
more susceptible to problems. Hope everyone else is fine, or if not is
treatable.

Mostly, they drink from the ponds, but a few of the fields don't have ponds.
All the water troughs here are PVC. The pipes are all PVC too.
The vet was here earlier today and said their gums don't look anemic to him.
He took blood from Patrick's dam. We'll see what the results say....

Gosh, maybe there was just a concentrated spot or something the colt ate (do
colts pick junk up off the ground like cats do?) that maybe affected him
much more quickly since he was so young? I'm glad the vet didn't think the
horses looked too pale.

As far as I have heard they really never came to a conclusion on that. They
*think* the damaging Mare reproductive loss syndrome of the 2001 crop was
caused by the Eastern Tent Catipillar. They still are not sure *how* the
mares were affected by them, but are pretty certain that was the main cause.
Very bizarre.

Many thanks to all for the comforting purrs etc. The vet is en route even as
I write this. Gloria says last year's fertilizer had 339 lbs. of zinc
phosphate added. This was applied to just 15 acres. Sounds like a lot of
zinc phosphate per acre to me. She also says that two of the pastures that
were fertilized were gone over twice. One of the fields that got done twice
is one that Patrick and his dam were in for two weeks just before he died.
She says the county extension service told her the soil doesn't need zinc,
but the fertilizer people said that zinc is not available to the plants so
she must add zinc phosphate to the mix.
Anyway Gloria will take grass and clover samples to be analyzed for zinc,
and the vet will be taking blood samples from all the horses.
I don't know what will happen. If there's too much zinc in the fields, how
to counteract it? And where to keep and how to feed the horses until it's
gone?

Wow. How awful. You might pose your question over at rec.equestrian. THere
are some pretty haughty people there (mostly old cowboy types that don't
believe horses should be "disneyized" AT ALL, but dang they do know their
stuff), but I will say there are *extremely* knowledgable people as well
that have tons of experience and often have had similar problems as others.
Someone might have some very good suggestions if even as to where to go
professionally. I am SOO sorry to hear about this.

That is pretty scary. I used to think that zinc must be pretty
harmless, since they put in vitamin pills - "Centrum: From A to Zinc",
and pennies are made out of it, and doctors don't seem to get too
concerned when kids swallow them.
I once read about a plant that had such great nickel absorbing
qualities that people were considering just harvesting the plant for
nickel instead of mining the soil. Then, the horses eat all that
grass... Hope the kitties haven't been eating the grass, too.

I tried to do a little web research, and apparently pets can get zinc
overdose from swallowing a penny. They recommend x-ray and removal if a pet
is anemic and they find a penny in x-ray. Kids I'd imagine can pass them.
I sure hope all the other horses will be OK. Its a shame that poor Patrick
had to be the bellwether, but he may just have saved the rest of them.

Plants don't need exorbitant amounts of zinc that I know of (I am a
retired plant molecular biologist - worked in ag chem for 15 years).
Zinc is a heavy metal, and I'm not exactly sure how you would
counteract it in soil. I would be checking the water supply (and
ground water) as well - any run-off has certainly tainted the water.
I would ask your co. extension people what they think of the situation
- they may have some remedies for you.
In closing - so sorry about the foal - he was gorgeous.
