Purrs for Persia - while I was out of town...

I took her in to the vet to be boarded earlier than expected before my trip
last Thursday.  I found her peeing outside the litter box and blood in her
urine.  Another UTI.  So I scooped her up and took her in immediately.

Friday night when I was at my hotel in downtown Minneapolis the vet called.
Could he do an x-ray?  Absolutely.  He called me back the next day.  She had
three bladder stones; needed surgery.  Okay to do that?  Of course!  She's
my baby, what the hell else was I going to say?

He called me Monday afternoon after the surgery.  They found the cause of
the stones and the UTI's - she had an acorn-sized cyst growing in the wall
of her bladder.  He explained to me the lining of the bladder is a lot like
a human mouth.  And when her bladder was empty, that cyst was rubbing away
at the inside lining of the bladder, kind of like if you bite your cheek
without intending to.  This set up a breeding ground for infection and also
caused the stones to form.  They removed the cyst as well as the stones.

Persia came through with flying colours.  She was very vocal the day after,
not in a happy way.  But by Wednesday she was more like just "chatting" with
the staff.  He did say she wasn't fussing with the stitches or anything so
the Elizabethan collar probably wouldn't be necessary.  I'll find out when I
pick her up tomorrow.

As for myself, I'm exhausted.  I had a 4 hour layover in Atlanta to get home
from Minneapolis.  Had a great trip, but of course I was calling to check on
Persia every day after her surgery.  It put a slight damper on things.  But
at least she was already there when they discovered the problem and they do
love her - she's such a sweet cat :)

Great trip but glad to be home - at least for a little while.  By the way,
my long-lost insisted on paying for Persia's vet bills.  WOW!  I still need
purrs - we'll have to go back for a check-up next week and stitches removal.
And pending lab results on the cyst.  (sigh)

She is a sweet cat. :)  That was a good catch finding the blood in her
urine and the cyst.  But now you must marry John. :)

LOL!! I think he might be right, Jill. :)

I'm really glad they found the cause of Persia's problems - and I hope
this will be the end of them!

Hey, I'm workin' on it!  We have such a great time together.  Might not have
been right 23 years ago when we split up but it sure feels right now that we
are older and wiser.

Thanks, Joyce.  Me too.  I feel bad I had no idea she was probably in pain.
She's such a sweet cat, she never complains.  Hope she's not too mad at me
when I get her home.  It would have needed to be done even if I didn't go
out of town.  Poor sweet baby.

You would only have been able to keep up on Persia by phone even if you had
been home.  That would have been a miserable several days.  With the added
anxiety of wondering how on earth you would find the money for her
treatment.  Has John even met Persia yet?

Nope, he's only seen pictures of her.  She's on my luggage tags when I
travel.  And on the trip we ate at a place that had Internet access so I
showed him her pics on webshots.

She seems to have settled in now, back at home, just fine.  We're about to
take a nap together.  Sitting at an airport for close to 4 hours yesterday
has left me a tad tired.

It's really an amazing story - I mean, how often does that happen?? Your
revived romance sounds like it would make a great script for a movie! :)

You shouldn't feel guilty - cats naturally hide their infirmities so they
won't appear weak to potential predators or competitors. I'm not surprised
that you didn't catch it. I'm just glad that you were able to get good care
for her before you left!

Purrs for her continued recovery,

I am glad you found the problem in time.  I got Katie and Cinders
last June, shortly after I moved back into my house after the fire.
Katie was throwing up a lot, so I took her to a neighborhood vet, who
diagnosed the problem as hairballs.  I tried to give her hairball
treatment, both the malt-flavored and tuna-flavored kind, without
much success.  She liked to be petted, but didn't like to be picked
up, so it was a shock to realize this February that she had lost
about half her body weight.  I took her back to the vet, and had
X-rays done.  Unfortunately, she turned out to be near death from
multiple cancers, and I had to have her put to sleep.  The much
vomiting was apparently caused by the cancer, meaning that she was
already ill when I adopted her, but not showing her pain otherwise.

Cinders, fortunately, is healthy.  She was very scared of me for
months after I got her, but, a couple of months before Katie died,
Cinders abruptly decided to become affectionate, and has been a real
love-bug ever since.

Glad you had a good time, even though no doubt worried about Persia.
Purrs that the surgery will end the UTI cycle, and the cyst test
results will come back with no new worries.

You really have a treasure there - okay, two treasures, including the
one you'll be picking up at the vet.  ;-)

I'm glad she came through all right, and sorry you both had to go
through all that.  Purrs for a negative report on the cyst.

Update:
Persia is home and while she's happy to be here she's not really happy with
me.  She has one shaved front leg where the IV was and her belly is bare.
I'm going to have to pill her tonight (oh gawd) and for the next two weeks.
She has to have yet another special food which they don't stock.  The
surgeon said the bladder stones were primarily calcium-something-ite, which
they don't see very often, and it's rare to find three of them.  Leave it to
Persia to come up with some exotic kind of bladder stone.  She's just that
kinda gal :)

I'm to feed her regular food until the special ordered canned stuff comes in
Monday or Tuesday.

The receptionist was like, "Uh, did they tell you how much this was going to
cost?"  Yep.  Dr. Sanders told me I could pay this much now and then pay the
balance in a couple of weeks.  I'm unemployed.  I just happen to have a
guardian angel helping me out here.  She said "Whew!  Good thing for you!
She was a young woman - apparently she's not familiar with bills that high
in her day to day life.  It's almost as much as my rent and if I were still
working I wouldn't have batted much of an eye.  I have to ask for special
purrs for John for helping me and Persia out here.

Anyway, Persia she checked out the apartment to make sure I didn't rearrange
anything.  Now she's on a cushion next to me, grooming herself.  No paper
collar required, she's not messing with the incision.  She seems more intent
on grooming the remaining fur (believe me, there's plenty of it even if she
is a shorthair!) than anything else.  Her pride has taken a blow, but she
still maintains her regal dignity.

Thanks for all the purrs.  Please continue with them; I've never tried to
pill her before so this should be interesting.

Wow, isn't it funny how things turn out?  Persia probably more accepting
what happened to her at the Vet's because she was already comfortable
staying there.  Well, that and she is just a great little gal!

Sorry that this happened to the sweetie but what a relief that you may
have gotten to the bottom of her problem!

Hope she continues to do well!

More purrs continuing for you, Jill!  And for her sweet master as well!  Ask
your vet about whether they have a rubber-tipped pill popper; I have one
from my vet and it works very well.  They should also show you how to pill a
cat!

I'm so glad Persia is going to be better, although her pride has been
dented at the moment :)

I *love* doctors like this. What with my own recent unemployment, I've
had a recurrance of back trouble (stress exacerbating other things)
and have started seeing a chiropractor. At my very first visit, when
he found out about my job situation, he said "pay what you can when
you can, and if it turns out you can't pay at all that's ok too". Then
when I was checking out with the receptionist, he told her to make
that note on my billing. (fortunately, I don't expect to need to take
advantage of his generosity)

I haven't often come across many professional service providers with
this sort of attitude and understanding. It's refreshing!

When our first cat was injured and saved by a vet that accepted him from
someone who found him at the side of the road, the vet bills were a lot of
money.  A few months later our dog had a single pup and required a cesarean.
They were very good about letting us pay as we could.  We were in Alaska,
with a new baby and a low military pay grade.  Every pay day my daughter and
I took $20.00 to pay the vet.  Those two guys were wonderful people and
great vets just out of school.  Hope karma has been most kind to them.
