Imagine My Surprise....

Melissa Houle - 23 Jun 2004 19:09 GMT To discover my recently adopted cat girl, Francesca, was expecting a kitten! To distill this story down to its essentials, I made a trip to the emergency vet on Sunday night, because there was a great deal of watery, bloody discharge dripping out of Francesca's rear end. At the vet, I discovered she was pregnant, and had at least one kitten in her, and the discharge that had alarmed me was her water breaking. The midnight vet said she'd probably deliver the kitten in the night, and if she didn't I was to either bring her back, or take her to my regular vet.
As of MOnday morning, still no kitten, to my disappointment and concern. So Cesca had a c-section, during which the vet delivered one living and two dead kittens. She and the living kitten are home as of yesterday afternoon, and fortunately, Cesca is a very good mother who is taking excellent care of her baby. I'm taking care of HER, and giving her lots of food, love and praise. It's amazing that she knows just what to do when she is still so young herself. The kitten is a wee brown tabby like his/her mother, and for the moment, I'm calling it T.K. for Tiny Kitten. It's not yet clear if the kitten will make it, but since it lived through the night, I'm hopeful that it will. One day at a time. It has a lot of white on its little face, a white bib, and the tiniest little white paws. It's little tail is maybe an inch long and as big around as a piece of string.

I was definitely unprepared for a C-Section, and I've told Cesca she's used up her quotient of medical emergencies for the next five years. =o) But the baby is amazingly cute, for all that it's tiny eyes are screwed shut. Cesca and T.K. are all curled up together in their box. But the light is too dim for a good picture, right now. Also, I don't want to upset Cesca, who is not precisely fond of the camera.

And now you have a baby kitten, how cute! (Especially since you don't have to hand-raise her yourself.)
I wonder why two died in the womb? That doesn't seem to be very common.
I don't know where you adopted her from, was it a shelter or animal rescue group? If so, I'm surprised they didn't spay her before adopting her out. Did the emergency vet spay her during the C-section, at least?
Congratulations!

(Sorry if that's a dumb question, but human females don't usually have hysterectomies as part of a ceasarian, so I'm not sure how it would affect breast feeding if they did.)
> Congratulations! > > Joyce Mischief - 24 Jun 2004 05:27 GMT If I remember my anatomy correctly, having the uterus and ovaries removed might stop milk production.
The ovaries produce estrogen which plays a huge part in mammary development. On the other hand, prolactin and oxytocin are needed for milk letdown and production, but I believe those are secreted by the pituitary gland.
It sounds like it might affect it, but I might be wrong. I've have to ask at work on Friday.
Can't wait for pictures
take care,

Melissa Houle - 24 Jun 2004 08:08 GMT > > I wonder why two died in the womb? That doesn't seem to be very common. > > [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > > > > Joyce Not sure about the two who died. It's sad, but I'm glad at least one kitten made it. As I didn't realize she was pregnant until just before delivery, I did use Advantage on her a few weeks ago, alas. And she'd been treated with Advantage just after she was picked up, too. That may have been what caused the deaths. This is still a very young mother, and the babies arrived well ahead of schedule, if, as the emergency vet on Sunday night thinks, she was impregnated in early May, just before the Humane Society picked her up. In the event, she was very lucky to get caught, and taken to a safe place where she was fed regularly. At that point, it was too early in the gestation for anyone to realize she was pregnant, and Cesca couldn't tell anyone about it. =o\
She was spayed as well as C-sectioned. I think the vet would have probably waited to spay her if that interfered with her milk production. He's been in business for many years, so I trust he knew what he was doing. This way, Cesca only had to go through surgery once. I've been keeping a close watch, and I've seen the kitten nursing several times, today. Cesca certainly LOOKS equipped to feed a kitten. I've been giving her several small meals every few hours, as that seems to be what she wants. T.K. as I call the kitten is a spunky little mite. S/he has made several exploratory circuits around the box s/he shares with Mama rather than just lying passively on the blanket--not bad for a blind newborn. If the kitten wasn't any getting nourishment it would show up fast. I am rather more sanguine about the kitten's chances as of tonight, given Cesca's strong maternal instinct. It's tiny little cries seem at least as strong to me as they were yesterday, but keep the purrs coming.
For those of you who asked for pictures, I don't have any, yet. For one thing, Cesca is not crazy about the camera, and I think she's had enough stress for the moment. But fear not, the kitten's progress will be documented to the best of my ability =o) I just have a very basic, idiot-proof point and shooter camera that doesn't always work. I'm also one of those neanderthals who doesn't own a digital camera.

(Though I wonder if it hurts to have a kitten suckling in an area that was so recently cut open.)

Pat - 07 Jul 2004 01:29 GMT > I wonder if it hurts to have a kitten suckling in an > area that was so recently cut open. I took care of a mama cat in Arizona whose kittens were way overdue. They couldn't get born because they were all dead. The mama was spayed during the C-section also. After that, the mama kept stealing another mama's babies to nurse them. So it must not have hurt much.

I'm already valiantly fighting temptation. There is the *sweetest* kitten at the shelter. Sort of in rough shape but I think rehabilitate-able. (word??) And it's a POLYDACTYL. Just like Yo-Man. My favorites. But back to my mantra. I do not need five cats. I do not need five cats. I do not need five cats. I do not need five cats. I think I'll get a picture tomorrow. Then you all can ooh & aahh and THEN tell me I do not need five cats.

This is a true story...
My father and stepmother knew that my baby brother was going to have to be born by Caesarian. Nonetheless, flush with parental enthusiasm, they decided that Dad was to take photos of the event. The roll of film was duly taken and sent off to be processed, however when we got the little package back we found it to be full of someone's holiday snaps. There had been a mix-up and someone else was, at that very moment, finding photos of an operation instead of beaches and smiling faces...
When the developers arranged a swap they told us the other people had been "very upset."
