This morning I stumbled upon some kittens that could use some purrs.
I was delivering a load of fiberglass insulation to a company in
Livermore, California (just east of Oakland and San Francisco). It was
going to take a while to get my trailer unloaded, so I was walking
around outside the building. When I got over near the refuse baler I
noticed a fuzzy little head underneath - a kitten!
Since I always worry about kitties who appear to not have a home, I went
to the truck and opened a can of tuna and poured a bowl of water, then
placed them under the baler and retreated. As soon as I was out of
sight, the little kitten came out again - with his/her four littermates!
All five kittens dug in to the tuna and the water, polished off all the
tuna, then sat in the sun grooming themselves. Four of them are grey
tabbys, the fifth is solid black.
I noticed interesting personalities in a couple of them. The first four
kittens had been chowing down for a minute or two when out walked the
fifth kitten, yawning hugely. Old sleepy missed out on probably half the
can of tuna. The first kitten I saw had a black patch over his nose. He
noticed me watching them while they were grooming, and as soon as he did
he took a few steps closer to me, sat and stared with a look that seemed
to say "this is our territory, and we don't welcome intruders. If you
come closer you'll have to deal with ME!".
When I finally got unloaded I put out a second can of tuna - I was
worried that Sleepy might not have got enough to eat.
Now here's where the purrs come in - I'm trying to find someone who does
cat rescue to come trap these babies (and momcat if she's around). I've
e-mailed a couple of animal shelters looking for information on people
who might be interested in helping.

They sound like they're used to getting handouts. You carry cans of
tuna with you whereever you go? :)
They sure do sound too cute. Purrs that they are trapped
successfully. I'm sure they can all be rehomed.

Lots of purrs coming over for the kittens. No sign of their mama? Thank you
for caring and giving them food and trying to find homes for them, Dan.

Dan,
There's a local feral rescue group called Fix Our Ferals. They serve
Alameda County, which Livermore is part of. Their phone number is
510-433-9446. Website is at: http://fixourferals.org/index.php3
I thought I might call them myself, but then I realized that I have
no idea where exactly these kittens are! If you are still in the area,
you could call them yourself. Or if you've had to go elsewhere, you
could email me privately (remove the X's) and describe to me where you
found them, and I will call them.
Just wondering - do you bring cans of tuna with you to places in case
of just this type of emergency? :) It's great you had it!

Excellent! Thanks for that info. I had never heard of them before. I'll
give them a call this afternoon.

I carry tuna both as food for me, and to share with any needy felines I
encounter on the road. Likewise the plastic bowls I bring along -
they're there in case I need them, or need to leave one or more for kitties.

Dan - if you have any trouble reaching them, please let me know and I'll
try to help. I just saw a post this morning (on a local email list), from
someone who had a feral cat in her neighborhood and tried to reach Fix
Our Ferals, but nobody returned her calls. That phone line is volunteer-
staffed, so I guess you never know when someone will be there. However,
another perosn responded to that post who volunteers for FOF, so I wrote
her to tell her of your situation, and so that I would have someone to
contact in case you don't have any luck.
Please keep us informed...

Thank you for being a feral steward!
I also usually carry catfood around with me when I travel, along with a
large square
spade shovel for safely moving alligator snapping turtles off the highway.
(Plain box turtles I just bring
back to the farm.)

Dan,
You are a mobile guardian angel. It is so kind of you to look out for and
helping cats you discover along the way.
We're sending purrs and prayers for the kittens and their mama, and for you,
too, that you will find the job you are looking for.
