"Vietnam man hopes for hair record
A Vietnamese man who has not had a hair cut in 31 years hopes to get into the
Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest hair in the world.
Tran Van Hay, 67, has hair which is now 6.2 meters (20 feet) long, according to
Vietnam's state-controlled press.
A local official said Mr Tran stopped having haircuts after one made him ill.
"He can't work anymore as a farmer because of the volume of hair so he's just
collecting herbs for traditional medicine as charity work," he said.
According to the Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper, Mr Tran last washed his
hair six years ago, and now usually ties it up and covers it with a scarf.
The paper said he had not yet approached the Guinness World Records to get his
claim authenticated.
According to the organisation's web site, the current record holder is Hoo
Sateow, a man from northern Thailand.
His hair was measured in 1997 at 5.15 m (16 ft 11 in)."

I'd be more inclined to think six-legged (rather than four-legged) vermin!

Of course, my hair is short, but if I go more than THREE DAYS without
washing it, I'd just as soon not be seen in public!

hmmm I wonder if they shouldn't make him wash before measuring for the
record - after all he might loose some inches (or feet) once all the
crud is gone

Actually, I think he'd *gain* some inches after the crud is gone, and
all those tangles are undone. (I sure wouldn't want the job of untangling
all that... and it would take one big bottle of conditioner!)

That hair is horrible. There's a woman who I used to see occasionally around
the town centre who had waist length, matted grey hair. It was disgusting,
you could see things moving in it, I swear. I was so tempted, every time I
saw her, to take scissors to it. *shudders*

Wonder if that was the origin of the expression "knothead"?

The photo looks fake. For a start, the one big dreadlock looks far too
thick, people simply don't have that much ahir. Secondly, dreadlocks tend to
be in the *plural*, not one big one all the way from the top of the head.
Third is that its width changes - If it was real hair, it owuld be thickest
at the top and thinnest at he bottom. Fourthly, the colour is wrong. Its
brown - if he's Vietnamese it should have been black except for the fact
that a 67 year old would have conderably *grey* hair. And last of all, if
you look closely you can see the hair around his face and ears is quite
smooth and wispy and grey and it appears that the "dreadlock" is sitting
above his head like a hat. Dreadlocks start from the *scalp*. And lastly,
although its possible for straight-haired people to have dreadlocks, its
usually those people who have really curly hair that get dreadlocks; those
of us with straighter hair just tend to get gruesome tangles. Vietnamese
people are not known for their 'fros.
The story may be correct, but I'm quite sure the picture is a fake.
Sorry.

I only dispute one of your claims, namely #4, regarding color.
Reemmber, this guy hasn't washed his hair [allegedly] in six *years*.
That brown is probably dirt and grime, IMO.

Could well be true. I can't imagine washing my hair for *six years*. My
goodness, the itch!. (the stench?)
