Do any of you have cats who smack the glass (it's hard to explain) when they
want to come back in? Harvey does it, it looks as if he's trying to scratch a
hole in the glass. But he's just getting our attention.

Mine use to push on the door so it banged a bit. Irritating as hell but it
worked!

Nikki does this on the door to the balcony - even though it's *open*. She
also gets up on a chair and scratches the window. Though the door is open.
Screech screech screech. That cat is determined to drive me insane.

Mine do that when they're in the house sometimes. I have no idea why.
I have a cat door, and the slider is very hard to open, so I almost
never open it.

There is no glass on our bedroom door but Jazz will pound on it and howl
until I open the door for him in the morning.

You have a pet and you -shut- the bedroom door?
Silly human, doors aren't supposed to close ever!

Little Bit does, both to get in or out depending on her mood.
Sometimes she gets upset with me now that I only let her out when I'm
ready to go out with her - she came to me as a stray, so she's thinks
she should be able to go out anytime.
From the subject line I figured you were asking about something both
Little Bit and Sammy do. When they see one of the neighbor cats
visiting they sometimes run full speed at the glass and jump against
it from a couple feet away. They don't run into the glass, they just
want the noise from when their front paws smack the glass.

When it was warm enough to step outside without bursting into flame, Harvey
used to sit on the interior or exterior (I know, confusing) deck chairs with
us. Fortunately he is really scared of grass so we never really have to worry
about him escaping.

Certainly do, Mojo does it at the front door when he wants "in" even though
he's got a perfectly good cat door.

You must understand, cat doors are only for use in emergencies. That's
why cats have humans, so they can open doors and let the cat think
wether or not he/she wants to go through it.

Ah, a perfectly plausible explanation. Rocky has never used the pet
door, and the girls use it only to get inside when something startles
them while we're outside. Well, that's not entirely true, Sammy also
seems to think of it as a knocker to get my attention so that I'll go
open the door to let her out when she sees me outside

When the cat was well away from the door, I made sure he sees how it can close
and shut him out very fast. He's learned that when the door is open he better
think fast. (No, I would never shut it on him but it glides swiftly).

Mine have not discovered that yet.
They just sit at the French Doors and look in. Waiting patiently for
the doorman to get there. If I am late(for them at least) the youngest
one will meow several times. Each meow getting louder than the last
one.

When we had our old storm doors our cat would hook the corner of the door
with its claw and pull it repeatedly so the door would go bang-bang-bang.
It sounded just like a human knocking on the door.

The best was my granny's cat, Pandora. Grandma had a wooden front
door with a little window near the top. Pan would jump up, hang on
the window frame, brace herself with her back feet, and stick her
little head in the window. It looked like there was a six-foot-tall
cat outside.
