Purrs for Dan and Crystal

My son Dan called me this evening, just as I was getting ready to eat my
dinner.  All he said was Hi, but I could tell something was wrong.  He
was worrying about his cat, Crystal.  He said she seemed awfully weak.
He wasn't very specific about what was wrong, but he broke down and had
to say he'd call me later.

Crystal is 16 years old, and has had some problems.  She was checked two
months ago, and the doctor said she wasn't in any immediate danger, but
at that age, it doesn't take much.  When he called back he said he was
thinking about taking her to the emergency vet, but he was afraid of
what they'd say.

I decided I'd better go over.  He lives about 35 miles from me.  For one
thing, he hadn't had any dinner, and for another, I figure he'd need
some moral support.  Also, if he did decide to take her in, I figured I
could drive so he could hold her.

I picked him up something to eat and went over there.  The poor little
thing looks like a caricature.  She's a Persian whose fur gets really
matted.  She's recently been shaved, and she's really skinny.  She looks
like a stick figure with a big, funny face.  She can walk around, but
she's very feeble.  She acts hungry, but only eats a bite or two at a
time.  I convinced Dan that taking her in was probably a good idea.  He
had been debating about doing it tonight or waiting until morning.  He
decided to take her, but couldn't make the call himself.  When I called,
they said to bring her in, but warned there would be a two-hour wait.

After much thought and discussion, we decided that she didn't seem to be
that uncomfortable, and making her sit in a waiting room full of other
animals wouldn't make her feel any better, so he decided he'll take her
in the morning, and I came home.  She seems so feeble, maybe she'll take
the decision out of his hands, but you never know.  I'd have offered to
go over in the morning to drive him, but I'm picking up a cancer patient
at 8:45, so that's out.

Anyway, I know people here will understand, and Dan and Crystal can use
your purrs.

I just got the following e-mail from my son:

The news is not good.

I called a little after 9:00 and the guy (vet assistant) I spoke to
(same as last night) told me that he wanted to me to speak to the vet
(different one than last night) but she was with a client.

However, he did tell me that her values were bad, they had her in an
incubator and on oxegyn treatment.

I finaly spoke to the vet around 10:30 and she cut right to it.

She said she wasn't really responding to treatment and that it might be
time to let her go.  She said some time ti can take a while to be
effective and there was no harm in continuing treatment.

It was obvious to me by her first staement that she didn't think it
would make much of a difference.

She said she would prefer if I would come in this afternoon and meet
with her to make the final decision.  I'm sure she knew I knew what it
needs to be.

So I going in later, but....

Yes, I think you're right about that.  This would have been his first
time to make the decision.  When he was living at home, his father and I
made that decision when necessary.  Crystal is the first and only pet
he's had since he moved out on his own.

Joy, I have only just read your posting and am so sad for Dan.
It will have meant a lot to him that he didn't have to make the
decision.   He did everything possible for Crystal and when he gets over
some of the loss it will matter to him that she went in her own time and
that he did everything possible for her.

I'm so sorry, also feeling very sad as the symptoms sound very similar
to my Rosie, who crossed the rainbow bridge last July. Continuing purrs
for Dan, Crystal and you, it's so hard to see someone you love hurting.

I just read that Crystal went to the RB, my sincere codolences and a
candle lit.

Thanks to everyone for the purrs and prayers.

This morning Dan called the doctor and they gave him an appointment
for 3:00 this afternoon.  I went over so I could drive and he could hold
her on the way, rather than having to put her in a carrier.

The poor little thing only weighs 3 1/2 pounds!  She weighed 6 pounds
two months ago.  She's dehydrated, and the doctor is sure her
electrolytes and potassium are down, and she may be anemic.

Crystal is in the hospital, having tests and being given fluids and
antibiotics.  The doctor said there was a one in four chance that this
would help, but Dan said he had to try.  It will cost somewhere between
$1,300 and $1,800.

I don't know which of the two was more pitiful.  Dan kissed Crystal
several times while we were waiting for them to fill out the paperwork.

I stayed and talked with Dan a while after he went back home.  He's
supposed to call tomorrow morning to see how she's doing.

Sometimes mothers are still needed.

Poor thing!  She's all skin and fur!  Purrs that she gets rehydrated
and feels better.

And not much fur, since she's been shaved.  She looks really awful, but
I was shocked at the weight.  Thanks for the purrs.

Thanks, Karen.  I'm sure I'll get an e-mail from Dan some time tomorrow
morning.  He probably won't be able to call me, but he'll send me an
e-mail once he gets to work.  I'll report after that.

Thank you, Adrian.  I haven't heard from my son this morning, and I'm
afraid he just couldn't get it together enough to call or e-mail because
the news was bad.

Joy,
Purrs and caring thoughts and virtual headbutts and hugs are on the way
for Crystal and Dan. Is there any way you could call the Vet and find
out how she is?

Thanks, Julie.  I had thought of that, and picked up the vet's card
yesterday.  However, before I could decide to call, I got an e-mail from
my son and he said the prognosis is not good.  He's supposed to go over
there this afternoon and make the final decision.  He knows what it will
have to be, as she is not responding to treatment.
