Ah well, this has been one frustrating evening for trying to stay
logged on. We've been having a very dry couple months here, which
helped me forget that one of the common problems with out phone lines.
When we get heavy rain, or rain after dry spells, we have the devil of
a time logging on and staying online without dropped signals. Good
news is that we had half an inch of rain yesterday, and a few
sprinkles this morning. Bad news is that all evening I can only stay
logged on for a few minutes at a time. I did manage to read the ng,
and post replies, but only after repeated dropped signals ;-(( Good
news is that we really need the rain, it will help business, and
there's more in the forecast over the next week.

Steve,
If your going to talk about the weather, give us an idea where
you are. I'm guessing that you're not in the desert, but that leaves
a lot of territory. Here in LA, we're into the "June Gloom." Days
dawn with a heavy overcast which doesn't burn off till noon or so. It
takes a transplanted NYer a few years to believe that it's not going
to rain later in the day after looking at a morning sky in June.
Regards and Purrs,
O J

I'm in SW Oklahoma. If you watch the national weather you'd think
we've been having plenty of rain, but actually there's been rain all
around us and very little has fallen here where I live. Normal May
rain total around five inches, this year about 0.02. Since I do lawns
and landscaping, this has really slowed business, since most of my
business is residential where few irrigate.
I remember California weather well, grew up in Bakersfield

I had this problem when I first bought this house, and finally had
the phone company check it after three or four years when the problem
became severe. It turned out that the main junction box where the
outside cable connected to the inside wiring was still the original
1957 model, and, after over four decades in a wet climate, had almost
totally corroded. Since this problem was external to the house, not
internal, the phone company replaced the junction box at no expense
to me, and I haven't had any wet-weather-disconnect problems since
then.

Reminds me... of when... we first moved to this area...we were staying at a
place on the TX/Okla. border.....we constantly had phone and internet
problems...drop offs, dead lines, you name it.... the week we moved... our
area had a huge ice storm(the electricity and p. lines(this time at the
junction box) went down as per usual). I was outside when I heard the phone
guys say..hey,look at this! this box is one of the old "whatever type"..it's
not even suppose to work with our other stuff...wow...bet these folks had
hard times with their service"HUH!!!!!...had a great 2 days of good internet
service before we moved....Now we suffer with bad lines again...our home is
in a new area and all lines are underground(we checked this out before
buying) BUT, unknown to us... they tie into the old lines in town ..so when
rain/snow , ices or whatever ...down go the p.lines and
electicity...sighhhh... :-) Liz

Cable company just ran fiber in our neighbourhood (Toronto) and I
upgraded the modem to 5Mbps today. Damn, that SPAM downloads in a hurry
now.
OK, I'll shut up now . :-)

Ha! Welcome to my world. We are in phone-service purgatory or something. Crummy
service for dial-up...and *every* call is longdistance. NO local internet
provider, no local access #'s. So we have to stay on this stupid "calling plan"
which allows unlimited access to ONE phone number. So, if *that* number for
dial-up is busy or not working, we're screwed.

Just complaining.

I feel your pain. The phone lines here in Thailand where we live are
terrible and any little weather phenomena makes it even worse. We pay per
dial up and my phone bill got to be $50/month from dialling up dozens of
times per day. Then I got myself a new modem, it's external USB and it
comes with software for bad phone lines. When you put it in "safe mode", it
reduces the speed but I rarely get disconnected anymore. Now my phone bill
is $10/month.

I can relate. We are into our daily thunderstorm season here in south
Georgia, and I haven't been able to stay online for more than a few
minutes for the past couple of days. Bah.
