The three kitties went outside this morning and had fun playing leapfrog
in the back yard.   I was deep into the Sunday newspaper when I heard it
- sounds of a 'fight to the death' cat fight.   When I got to the back
door there was the evidence - wet patches and tufts of Bonnie's hair.
FSP was up the apple tree, Clyde was on top of the cat house and
Bonnie???   After much calling she slunk out of the undergrowth, sopping
wet and obviously the worse for wear.
Deo seems to have her in his sights lately.   I finally calmed her down
although she has several scratches.   When Clyde came up and tried to
lick her she hissed and growled at him.  We are all sick of Deo!!!!!!

Bev, that's horrible. I feel so sorry that the 3 kitties can't go outside
without that horrible Deo attacking them. What can you do about it? He might
really hurt one of them one of these days. :(

I don't know what to do about Deo;  I simply can't lock the kitties up
when they love the outside so.   BTW Deo is not a feral cat and is
neutered.   He lives next door and is quite a sweetie except he hates
other cats!!   When B & C were little I used to ask his slave to lock
him up sometimes so that I could let the kitties out for a run - I was
scared he might kill one of them.   The kitties are big now so should be
able to deal with him (Clyde I think is bigger than Deo) but they are
still scared of him.

Have you tried turning the garden hose on him?

I don't know how to help but I do know the problem.  I could not keep my two
in at this point if I had to.  At least Rosie and Jake seem more inclined to
stay fairly close to home.  They know the back yard is fairly safe.  I think
I might be buying one of those super soaker water guns the kids play with
and lying in wait for a neighbor cat to set foot in my back yard.  If you
could manage to keep Deo out of the back yard, your guys might feel safe and
stay in the back yard.

Size doesn't mean much without the attitude. For instance, Amber has
been topcat around here for years; and he is the smallest. But he has
the attitude of alphacat. Your cats are not bullies or fighters at
heart. Deo is. B&C&FSP were conditioned by him right from the
beginning. I wonder what a watergun would do if filled with
Feliway-flavored water? Or Rescue Remedy, etc.? Or maybe you and the
neighbors can meet with Deo's owner and set up a schedule for him to
be out alone.

IIRC, Deo used to be on the other side of the bullying, so he probably
thinks it's his turn to act the bully ;-(

Luckily, Rocky has been the topcat around here longer than I've been
around, and he has always been a benevolent ruler. No real fighting,
except during mating season when the other toms forgot their place.
Thankfully, since Rocky's been neutered he no longer takes place in
those spats. He still rules the food bowl and gets first dibs on the
best sunny spots, but he gets his way by pushing any challenger out of
the way, and is enough bigger than anyone else that they back off.

Suggestion:  Get a cat trap from the Humane Society.  Take him there
and have him neutered as a "feral" cat.  That ought to calm him down.

I thought the cat house was built so they could go out without running
away and be safe. Wasn't it ever finished? With Deo getting vicious
your cats need to be kept safe somehow. Maybe you could only let them
out when you are outside to scare Deo off.

We have tried turning the hose on Deo and going outside to chase him
off.  When he sees us he runs off because he knows we chase him. We are
always on the lookout for him.   The cathouse is finished and OK for
when we go away for a few days but they really hate it and weep
pitifully when locked up.   It's not dangerous outside in our area and
the street is full of long-term outside cats.  Deo is not selective,
according to other cat slaves he is always chasing the kitties - one
woman said she has had her cat to the vet three times because of him.

Its obvious Deo has all his teeth and claws intact.  I wonder if it would
take the wind out of his sails if his claws were trimmed?  A lot?  Its
sounded in the past like his owner it not thrilled with his behavior and the
resulting ire of the neighbors.  I can see you all showing up volunteering
to do the job.  I know sometimes when they take the sharp ends off a bulls
horns, it calms them down, or at least screws up their aim.

Perhaps the neighbors might get up a petition to Deo's owner?   I know
people can complain to the authorities if someone owns a vicious dog
that attacks other dogs, but that usually involves having the vicious
animal destroyed, which I'm sure is not what you want.

It's strange that they don't gang up on Deo. After all, they do out-number
him. On the island, all our respective cats (8 in all) look after their own;
Frank and Nikki gang up on anyone who comes too close to our house, for
example. Many purrs coming over for Bonnie to calm down.

Your family's cats sound highly tactical, Marina.  It sounds like what
Bev needs is a team leader.  Maybe the local kitty shelter has a
combat veteran. :)

Two possibilities come to mind.
One I used; one I read about.

One I only read about is clicker training a cat. But one would have to
have treats and access to Deo and not sure about training out
aggression of a cat. One gives the treat if Deo looks the other way
and so on. It's not difficult but it's probably something you can
discuss with a professional trainer, like Wendy Jeffries on the
clickertraining cat group on Yahoo or someone local.

When I had a large male cat antagonize my little female cat, I lost my
temper and grabbed the male, without gloves, and gave him a talking to
and a squeezing that hurt him enough that he cried out in pain and
then bit me to the bone.

After that, we did not have any trouble for a long time. Once or twice
a run around when my female went into his space. But in the end, there
was peace and quiet, much to my surprise.

If you do bully the bully, you might want to wear thick leather
gloves. You may need to take the role of the alpha cat and let Deo
know that you can and will protect your cats. Most of the cats around
me leave my female cat alone because they sense I won't tolerate any
fighting. And she just postures enough to give me enough time to hear
her and save her little furry a.s.

Poor Bonnie, I hope she's ok. I hope Deo finds someonelse's cat/pet to pick on.

Suz, Deo has already found someone else's pet to bully.
The half grown kitten two doors down.   The girl down there lost her
kitten in a road accident  several months ago and now has another.  Deo
beats it up regularly!!!
