dirtylitterboxofferingstospammers - 17 Jun 2004 16:49 GMT Well, teenagers today... ;-)
So much about them being s*x-mad, drug-crazed, disrespectful, foul-mouthed etc., etc.. & I've managed to raise a prude ;-)
Back in my young, free & single days, disco ruled, and queen was Donna Summer. Today I was in Norwich with Nathan & we went into HMV. I treated myself to a CD of Donna Summer tracks.
Coming back home in the car, Nathan suffered the indignity of his mother driving with the stereo loud, to the sound of "Love to Love you baby" "I feel love" "hot stuff" and the like.
Nathan's comment was "Good grief Mum, that girl has a one-track mind in her vocals!" in his best 'I am a shocked teenager' voice.
Then when it got to the track "no more tears (enough is enough)" duo with Streisand, when the vocals got to the bit where it says "I always dreamed I find the perfect lover, but he turned out to be like every other man" Nathan quipped 'And make no doubt about it Mum, she's had quite a few if her songs are anything to go by!' in his best shocked voice ;-)
Hehe - I've raised a teenage prude... hmmm... sounds like the title of a bad movie
Cheers, helen s

I know I've gotten old by the fact that 1) I don't understand the lyrics as they're sung and 2) even when Joel dutifully tells me what words they are 'singing', I still have no idea what they are talking about - and 3) When he explains to me the meaning behind the lyrics, I wish I hadn't asked. *Ewww*
Yowie, who was not happy to be told that one of her favourite songs "Where the Wild Roses Grow" by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue is not about one's beloved tragically passing away, but about a gruesome murder.

With Nathan I've always been very open about such issues, talking to him about them as he grows up - in language he understands. He knows all about the above - and I've told him that as and when he's ready for the "s" word, he *must* use a condom - and I've told him *why*. I've even told him that if he's too embarrassed to purchase them - I have no such embarrassment and will get them. He seems to be remarkably level-headed, so hopefully the honest approach and explaining the whys & wherefores has worked. Indeed, my own mum was incredibly up-tight and I never found out anything from her which helped me as I grew up

dirtylitterboxofferingstospammers - 18 Jun 2004 09:04 GMT >Nah, Helen. I'd say you've done a fine job. >Sam Thanks Sam - I appreciate that. As a parent, you can only try your best & learn from the mistakes you think were made with you when you were growing up - and, if you had a happy childhood, from the good things. Plus tell and show your child that he or she is loved every single day. Even though Nathan is now 15, we hug every morning as soon as he's come downstairs for breakfast, and last thing at night before he goes off to bed. He's the same with his Dad too.

Netherlands today is not prudish though.

They must not have lasted very long there... the Netherlands is one of the least "Puritannical" countries I've ever heard of. Dave Y mentions the window-shopping, and I can just imagine! They're very down to earth, those Dutch. Clearly the prude faction didn't gain much control in that culture. :)

I think the Netherlands must be one of the least prudish countries in the world.

After a while, the Puritans seem to have decided that they were just *too* tolerant. We're told this story over and over again around here in grade school especially around November.

The Puritans moved from England to Holland to escape religious persecution, then moved from Holland to Massachusetts to escape the religious tolerance in Holland (they wanted to have a society consisting of only Puritans). These are the folks that founded the Plymouth Bay Colony, and that Americans remember each year at Thanksgiving.
Modern-day Amsterdam is known for having a legal red-light district (legal prostitution).
