Post Boarding Agitation

Whew!  Got back this weekend from a 7 day visit with family and I had
one upset kitty returned to me at the cat kennel.  I don't know who did
what to whom but Oliver was very agitated for over 24 hours after we got
him home.  He has boarded plenty of times and always returned home
slightly more affectionate but very much his usual calm self in the
past.  This was a new place for us (we recently moved to a new city) and
I think I might look around some more.  It was so heart breaking to see
him howling and acting scared.  At one point I had him calmed down (I
was laying on the bed holding him which seemed to be the only thing that
worked) and he was finally deeply asleep so I snuck off the bed to go to
the bathroom.  He woke up when I was in there and actually screamed and
puffed up and then ran into the bedroom and jumped into my arms.  Poor boy!

He is much more his old self today but still getting plenty of love and
scritches from all of us.

I wonder if he was left in complete isolation?  For a cat that is used
to people and lots of attention that could be alarming.   MLB

I hope that isn't it!  We based our selection on the fact that he was
supposed to get a lot of interaction and two play times each day but to
be honest that was my first thought, too.  :-(

We did try them out for a couple of days before we did a long board and
he seemed fine but that was only for 48 hours.

Awww, glad he's returning to normal, finally. Wonder what happened
that had him so upset - we'll probably never know. Hopefully there's
an innocent explanation. Unfortunately, I can think of a couple things
that throw the girls off stride - nothing really seems to bother Rocky
for long. The carpet cleaners doing the apartment above me has left
Sammy spooked for a couple hours after they finish.

I think this really throws me for such a loop becuase he usually takes
everything in stride.  I have never seen him like this and it was
upsetting.  I know we'll never know but I sure wish I did!  :-)

There are so many things that could cause him to be upset.  Some innocent
and some that don't bear thinking about.  Was it strictly a cat kennel or
was it both dogs and cats or even a veterinary hospital?

Even another animal that reacted badly to being boarded and cried or
screamed or barked a lot could have been all it took.  If it were a vet
there could be sounds of pain or disturbing smells.  Barking or even howling
dogs could drive some cats over the edge.  Even something as simple as it
being too hot or too cold or too dark at night would be enough.  We found a
great place to leave or cats now.  A soundproof cat room with the cages so
they don't really see each other but do all see out a picture window
overlooking a park.  It's at a vet and they get plenty of people time but
can't hear the dogs and other goings on.

Hope Oliver settles soon.

Ditto hoping Oliver settles quickly.  Where I board Persia it IS a veternary
clinic but the cats are kept away from other animals.  Can't keep that
veterinary 'scent' out, I guess.  But they know Persia doesn't interact well
with other cats; she can't see them in her kennel.  And they take her out
and play with her a couple of times a day.

I'm leaving town again early on Friday morning so I'll have to drop her off
Thursday afternoon, poor baby.  So far, she hasn't come home traumatized,
she just misses being in her comfy home.  I think she even misses hearing my
lovebird, Peaches, chirping away; she's like white noise Persia is used to
hearing. :)

Thanks Jo.  I forgot to mention that when he got home he was doing this
strange kneading motion most of the night with his paws.  Never saw him
do that before.  I wonder of they had someone inexperienced doing his
nail trim?  I know, we'll never figure it out!

It was a animal hospital with a separate soundproof kitty room.

I did find a place that is a lot further out but it looks great.  They
have a small kitty room where a cat has some room to stretch out and
play as well as a window and bird feeder to watch.  It is also a plus
that we can board our dog there.  While the kitty room is away from the
dogs and the noise if Oliver gets upset at any point they can bring our
dog in.  Oliver seemed calmer once our lab was home with him.

Poor little guy!  Yes, I'd say it would be a good idea to find a new
place, or look into the possibility of a pet sitter who would visit him
at home.

Poor little Oliver! How terrible. Purrs that he calms down, and that you
find another place to board him.

Awwww, poor Oliver!  Whatever it was, I am sure that love and
scritches will make it all right again.  We're sending purrs that he
feels happy and secure again, and that it never happens again!
