Kitty Water Fountains

TBird - 14 Jun 2004 23:52 GMT Sweetie has gotten pretty demanding about "Turn the bathroom faucet on for me! Now!"
So I went out and got a fountainy thing - BUT - when I got it home I realized the basin/bowl is made of plastic, and Sweetie is prone to kitty acne, which is aggravated by plastic bowls.
I searched a bit, but all the brands seem to be made of plastic. Am I missing something? Can anyone point me at a ceramic version?
Thanks in advance!

this is rocket, all 4 of them get into it now. It is ceramic, I got it at a home/craft/plant sale at UNH, but I've seen the vendor at a bunch of different shows. It may be a little pricey at $65 http://tomsthumbpottery.com/sys-tmpl/door/

Do they drink from it, or just play in it? :) Rocket plays (he plays in bathtub water too - crazy cat) and drinks, all the other's just drink. They have figured out it is 2 pieces, and the water drains back into the center piece. So they move the center out of the way to get to the water reservoir. Of course, all this time they have water in their bowls in the kitchen.

I got up and went and opened the door, thinking he wanted inside. But he came over for a few scritches, then went back and sat down where he'd been getting wet. Course, it was still pretty hot, so maybe he was jsut cooling off. He's also been known to sit in the middle of the yard in a drizzle, though he does head for cover if it starts to rain hard.

What they don't want is to be *immersed.* They all loved to play around with a little water, and the wet tub, after it's been drained, or after a shower, and the sinks-- always a magnet for them. I'm always wiping up little wet pawprints everywhere.
OTOH, immersion is a big no-no. Many of you must know the cat- bath phenomenon-- you sit in the tub, cat hangs around looking at the pretty water surface, even bats at it, but can't believe you actually want to sit in it up to your armpits. Yikes!

badwilson - 15 Jun 2004 04:05 GMT > Sweetie has gotten pretty demanding about "Turn the bathroom faucet on for > me! Now!" [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > TBird <---- kitty slave Isn't it mainly the food bowls that shouldn't be plastic? Not all that many bacteria will grow on plastic if there's only water in it. Just keep the water fresh and wash the bowl often. Vino had really bad chin acne for a while there. And I only use stainless steel plates and bowls. But it's hot here and I'm sure that bacteria's grew anyway. It took months to cure the acne but I finally did it by washing his chin with a soapy washcloth every few days and I also take up his wet food right away when he's finished eating. Before I left it because he would usually come back 30 min later and finish off the leftovers. No more of that now. I think it really helps. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. Every night I tell Pop when it's time to get my "special water". He squirts some in my bowl and I lap it all up. Mmmmmmm. Nothing better!

The ones who normally drink out of a bowl ignored it and the ones who normally drink from the faucet reacted exactly the same way. Truth to tell, I'd be surprised if Sweetie got close enough for it to affect his kitty acne.

One day when we were all in the kitchen, I got down on my hands and knees by the fountain and showed them how to use it, with a great show of lapping and slurping sounds. (No, I didn't acutally drink!) Both cats came running over to make sure they didn't miss what Meowmie was clearly enjoying. They've been drinking from it ever since!

They've been drinking from it ever since! What a riot. I think it's a scream how much theyr eally do imitate us-- after all, they don't look like they're paying attention most of the time! When I got Stinky his first big@SS scratching post, he wasn't sure what it was for, so I showed him (feeling really stupid, scratching the cat's post;)). Then he got it.
I'm still convinced that Stinky is such a big mouth cat (very talkative non-Meezer) because we are such bigmouth people. We talk and yell all the time, and I'm sure that Stinky just got the idea that's the way things are around here. You have to speak up around here. ;) We yell, he yells. ;) When he puts his two cents into a conversation, my mom always says "Who asked you?" or "Another county heard from. "

I think you are giving us way too much credit, a far more likely explanation is that they want to see if they can get the stoopid hooman to drink from a water fountain on the kitchen floor.

I am not sure if: - he was jealous because I got the first hug instead of him, or if - he was jealous because I was hugging her -or if he just feels that his place is in the middle of everything at all times.
Probably all of the above. ;)

I would also recommend cleaning the motor apparatus as it can get a "gunk" build up even with the carbon water filter in use.

At least once a week I completely disassemble mine, remove the motor and flow control apparatus and scrub it all down inside with a small brush and a big sponge in the bowl/fountain lip area. I brush the carbon filter off, too, under running water. Those filters last about 6 weeks each if properly cleaned on a regular basis.
